WSIU Public Broadcasting is in the midst of a brand roll out campaign with its own positioning strategy centralized in its tagline, Powered by You®. For WSIU-TV, the idea is to create soft sell testimonial spots in which WSIU supporters engage the audience with compelling stories about how public television has made an impact on their lives. By comparing the elements of branding and practices alongside WSIU’s Powered by You campaign, an attempt will be made to characterize and specify the brand, clarify the campaign strategy through its positioning, and identify the successes while offering suggestions to areas that were overlooked. -

To help inform the discussion, please find attached a copy of a recent Phoenix Center paper entitled A Retrospective Analysis of Vertical Mergers in Multichannel Video Programming Distribution Markets: The Comcast-NBCU Merger. In this paper, Phoenix Center Chief Economist Dr. George S. Ford presents a retrospective analysis of the price effects of the Comcast-NBCU merger. In particular, Dr. Ford conducts an econometric analysis of data on the prices paid for programming by multichannel video programing distributors (“MVPDs”) before and after the transaction and finds no evidence that Comcast’s programming prices rose after the merger. The analysis covers general interest programming, news channels, and national and regional sports networks. Given these results, Dr. Ford concludes that there is either a lack of a net positive effect on incentives to raise programming prices above competitive levels following the vertical merger or that the behavioral remedies placed on the Comcast-NBCU merger were effective. -

Introduction and Summary Consumers today enjoy a wealth of choices in the multichannel video programming distribution marketplace. This vibrantly competitive environment represents a dramatic departure from decades past, when claims as to the existence of bottlenecks were used to justify intrusive government intervention. One rising, and perhaps unexpected and largely unreported, source of multichannel competition is over-the-air broadcasting. Of course, dramatic changes in the media marketplace have been occurring for many years – and yet, due to its size, procedures, and inherent inertia, the "Communications Regulatory Complex" simply is unable to keep pace, especially in the face of considerable reflexive opposition by those who oppose any deregulatory changes. But with regard to broadcasting, cable, direct broadcast satellite (DBS), telco TV, and other media outlets, continued imposition of legacy regulatory restrictions of various types are in increasing tension with their First Amendment rights. Over the last ten years, the number of U.S. households that utilize an antenna to view their local television stations has increased by over a third, from nearly 11.8 million to 16 million. One explanation for that is the improved picture and audio quality that digital television (DTV) The Free State Foundation P.O. Another is that, as consumers "cut the cord" – that is, discontinue their subscriptions to traditional multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) and transition to streaming options like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and/or Amazon Prime Video – over-the-air television provides a free means to continue to receive the popular content, both national and local, that television stations carry. -

(Nasdaq: SBGI), announced that it has entered into an agreement with Cutting Edge Sports Management to broadcast the Dream Bowl for the next two years. The college all-star game will be played on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016 in Virginia Beach, Va.
