ABSTRACT Nowadays, female fashion magazines are one of the ways that women gain information of fashion, lifestyle, and entertainment. They also teach women how to dress, how to be beautiful and how to upgrade themselves. Female fashion magazines are no longer a stuff that people read it for pastime. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the portrayal of female fashion magazine (Rayli) and Chinese young women’s attitudinal and behavioral change. Rayli magazines as a female fashion magazines study sample. The style of presentation, contents and advertisements in Rayli magazines were concluded. A qualitative semi-structural interview method was used in this study. Collect data from previous studies to conduct questions for the materials of interviews. Fifteen Chinese young women who live in Nanning at least one year were invited into this interview. A uses and gratification theory was used as the foundation of this study to help the researcher figure out the answer of research questions. This research used thematic analysis to analyze the data collected from semi-structural interview. According to the findings, there are six concepts that will influence Chinese young women’s attitude and behavior toward lifestyle and work. This study can be seemed as a guideline to help female fashion magazines improving their contents. women gain information of fashion, lifestyle, and entertainment. They also teach women how to dress, how to be beautiful and how to upgrade themselves (Yang, 2001). Female fashion magazines are no longer a stuff that people read it for pastime. The female fashion magazine was born under the development of the material civilization and the spiritual civilization. Female fashion is disseminating the human culture to the world. Meanwhile it builds and improves its own culture, highlighting the richness of cultural practices of human culture (Pan, 2012). Female fashion magazine exists as a text format. It enhances the communication between media and audiences. In the process of female fashion magazine incorporate itself into human being’s daily life.     International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 2831–2852 1932–8036/20160005 “Power Femininity” and Popular Women’s Magazines in China EVA CHEN National Chengchi University, Taiwan Western women’s glossy magazines (“glossies”) have made increasing inroads in the Chinese market and advocate a “power femininity,” which celebrates women’s assertive individualism and power as consumerist agency. While this power femininity has global neoliberal resonances, it also taps into the unique postsocialist Chinese context, where the liberation of individual desires, including the material and the sexual, is linked with a strongly felt need to undo a past socialist wrong that repressed people and deprived them of what should be an inalienable human right. This concept departs from the caregiving, self-sacrificial, and family-oriented “natural femininity” promoted in local women’s magazines in terms of aspiration, assertiveness, and a nativist-versus- international divide, yet ultimately both the Western and local women’s magazines are united by a shared stress on the need to cultivate a distinct Chineseness in the feminine ideal and to position women’s magazines as an integral part of the Chinese nationalist project of modernization and progress. Abstract This thesis examines the development of Asian cultural modernity in the cities of Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai through their fashion magazines. These three cities have positioned themselves as aspirants to global city status, concurrently facilitating their ambitions by relaxing media laws and emphasising cultural production. One outcome is a growth in the production and consumption of fashion magazines. There has been a parallel growth in the consumption of and interest in fashion and self-adornment in these cities, particularly through global brand names. This thesis investigates these cultural transformations by examining the production of fashion texts in the context of their cities. It does this by utilising the concept of fashion journalism (as a product of fashion, journalism and the city) as a means of identifying the contemporary social, cultural and political articulations of these fashion texts. To do so, this research draws together a framework that takes into account different fields (fashion, journalism, modernity, city, Asia) that contribute to the concept of fashion journalism, thereby approaching fashion texts through a multi-disciplinary perspective anchored by establishing the contexts of each city and its specific magazine. The subsequent analyses of Vision (Shanghai), WestEast (Hong Kong) and Harper’s Bazaar Singapore reflect and capture an evolution of these cities coming into their own.
