CHAPTER 3 Biomolecules 3.1 Carbohydrates In the previous chapter you have learnt about the cell and 3.2 Fatty Acids and its organelles. Each organelle has distinct structure and Lipids therefore performs different function. For example, cell membrane is made up of lipids and proteins. Cell wall is 3.3 Amino Acids made up of carbohydrates. Chromosomes are made up of 3.4 Protein Structure protein and nucleic acid, i.e., DNA and ribosomes are made 3.5 Nucleic Acids up of protein and nucleic acids, i.e., RNA. These ingredients of cellular organelles are also called macromolecules or biomolecules. There are four major types of biomolecules— carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Apart from being structural entities of the cell, these biomolecules play important functions in cellular processes. In this chapter you will study the structure and functions of these biomolecules. 3.1 CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates are one of the most abundant classes of biomolecules in nature and found widely distributed in all life forms. Chemically, they are aldehyde and ketone derivatives of the polyhydric alcohols. Major role of carbohydrates in living organisms is to function as a primary source of energy. INTRODUCTION Catalytic dehydrogenation of alkanes is an endothermic reaction, which occurs with an increase in the number of moles and can be represented by the expression Alkane ! Olefin + Hydrogen This reaction cannot be carried out thermally because it is highly unfavorable compared to the cracking of the hydrocarbon, since the C-C bond strength (about 246 kJ/mol) is much lower than that of the C-H bond (about 363 kJ/mol). However, in the presence of a suitable catalyst, dehydrogenation can be carried out with minimal C-C bond rupture. The strong C-H bond is a closed-shell σ orbital that can be activated by oxide or metal catalysts. Oxides can activate the C-H bond via hydrogen abstraction because they can form O-H bonds, which can have strengths comparable to that of the C- H bond. By contrast, metals cannot accomplish the hydrogen abstraction because the M- H bonds are much weaker than the C-H bond. However, the sum of the M-H and M-C bond strengths can exceed the C-H bond strength, making the process thermodynamically possible. In this case, the reaction is thought to proceed via a three centered transition state, which can be described as a metal atom inserting into the C-H bond. The C-H bond bridges across the metal atom until it breaks, followed by the formation of the corresponding M-H and M-C bonds.1 Therefore, dehydrogenation of alkanes can be carried out on oxides as well as on metal catalysts. -

Weber, SETI Institute, NASA Ames Research Center, Mail Stop 239-4, Moffett Field, CA, 94035-1000, [email protected] Abstract: As shown in Figure 1, abiogenesis has sev- eral requirements: (A) a source of organic substrates and chemical energy that drives the synthesis of (B) useful small molecules (ammonia, monomers, metabo- lites, energy molecules), and (C) a second synthetic processs that yields large replicating and catalytic polymers that control (D) the growth and maintenance of a primitive protocell. Furthermore, the required chemical energy must be sustained and effectively coupled to individual reactions to drive biosynthesis at a rate that counters chemical degradation. Energy coupling would have been especially difficult during the origin of life before the development of powerful enzyme catalysts with 3-D active sites. To solve this energy coupling problem we have investigated abio- genesis using sugar substrates whose energized carbon groups drive spontaneous synthetic self-transformation reactions that yield: biometabolites, catalytic mole- cules, energy-rich thioesters, amino acids, plausible alternative nucleobases and cell-like microstructures [1-8]. Recently, we demonstrated that sugars drive the synthesis of ammonia from nitrite [9]. The ability of sugars to drive ammonia synthesis provides a way to generate ammonia at microscopic sites of sugar-based origins processes, thereby eliminating the need for a planet-wide source of photochemically unstable am- monia. Chapter 8 – Chemical Reactions Notes Chemical Reactions: Chemical reactions are processes in which the atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to form different chemical compounds. How to tell if a chemical reaction has occurred (recap): Temperature changes that can’t be accounted for. o Exothermic reactions give off energy (as in fire). o Endothermic reactions absorb energy (as in a cold pack). Spontaneous color change. o This happens when things rust, when they rot, and when they burn. Appearance of a solid when two liquids are mixed. o This solid is called a precipitate. Formation of a gas / bubbling, as when vinegar and baking soda are mixed. Overall, the most important thing to remember is that a chemical reaction produces a whole new chemical compound. Just changing the way that something looks (breaking, melting, dissolving, etc) isn’t enough to qualify something as a chemical reaction! Balancing Equations Notes: Things to keep in mind when looking at the recipes for chemical reactions: 1) The stuff before the arrow is referred to as the “reactants” or “reagents”, and the stuff after the arrow is called the “products.” 2) The number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides of the arrow. Even though there may be different numbers of molecules, the number of atoms of each element needs to remain the same to obey the law of conservation of mass. 3) The numbers in front of the formulas tell you how many molecules or moles of each chemical are involved in the reaction. 4) Equations are nothing more than chemical recipes. -

Lessons from Our Past The Search Is On What Does the Public Have to Learn from All This? A High School Curriculum in Astrobiology Astrobiology seems to be all the buzz these days. It was the focus of the ASP science symposium this summer; the University of Washington is offering it as a new Ph.D. program, and TERC (Technical Education Research Center) is developing a high school integrated science course based on it. So what is astrobiology? The NASA Astrobiology Institute defines this new discipline as the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the Universe. What this means for scientists is finding the means to blend research fields such as microbiology, geoscience, and astrophysics to collectively answer the largest looming questions of humankind. What it means for educators is an engaging and exciting discipline that is ripe for an integrated approach to science education. Virtually every topic that one deals with in high school science is embedded in astrobiology. What (or Whom) Are We Looking For? Movies and television shows such as Contact and Star Trek have teased viewers with the idea of life on other planets and even in other galaxies.
