DJ Fresh has dropped a new edition of his long-running series The Tonite Show , bringing Curren$y into the fold for the latest entry. Previous Tonite Show albums have featured Fresh teaming up with notable MCs such as Raekwon, Freddie Gibbs, Mozzy, Mistah F.A.B. and The Jacka. Spitta’s version includes 10 tracks with guest appearances by Guapdad 4000, Problem, T.Y. and Larry June, among others. Check out Curren$y and Fresh’s The Tonite Show stream, cover art and tracklist below. Curren$y & Freddie Gibbs Release Long-Awaited Joint-Album 'Fetti' Outside of diehard Curren$y fans, it can be difficult to keep up with all of his mixtapes and album releases. The man with some of the smoothest flow in rap puts out music like his pen continues to write in his sleep. Freddie Gibbs and Curren$y seems like a ideal match with similar flows and tastes in beats, so it made sense they would link up and do a full project together after a few tracks like “Scottie Pippen.” Fetti is their new collaborative album, produced by Alchemist, who brings the album to life. 22 months in the making, Fetti has been a long time coming and it has been worth the wait. At nine songs and 23 minutes, Freddie Gibbs and Curren$y are going for quality over quantity. This isn’t a Quavo solo album stacked with filler, but a concise record that covers what it needs to and leaves the listener with that dual feeling of being satisfied, but still wanting more. The songs seem to fit a similar formula of an intro, they each take a verse there is a sort of bridge in between with the potential for an outro. While their rapping styles and verses do match on a project, they do provide different perspectives so even at 23 minutes, you don’t dare get bored. Freddie Gibbs tends to opine about women or drugs and of course plenty of braggadocio about cars to match Curren$y’s love for cars and some green. They also give each other their own short track with “No Window Tints” going to Curren$y and the following tune “Willie Lloyd” going to Freddie Gibbs, which breaks things up a bit, but still matches the flow of the record. Freddie doesn’t shy away from politics, keeping things up to date on the Trump White House and who is headed to prison with his lines on “Location Remote,” rapping, “Niggas making statements they Manafort Papadopoulos / Trump sweating bullets on Diet Coke sniffing powder up / And if he build the wall we gone bring that dope underground with us.” Curren$y pays tribute to Mac Miller on the final song “Bundy & Sincere,” offering up a message to live life to the fullest, “Sands in the hour glass, so goes the days of our lives / Make sure you touch something luxurious before you die / Light one for Mac Miller, Blue Slide Park in the sky, still in here.” Alchemist’s smooth, jazz influenced beats provide the magic carpet ride for Freddie Gibbs and Curren$y to ride along like being in your own lane on Rainbow Road without any obstacles or fear of jumping off. Fetti has been a long time coming and is something to listen to now and plenty more times down the road. Stream it below or pick it up on iTunes..

MA Thesis Creative Industries. Date of submission: 6 Aug. 2018 Supervisor: dr. Vincent Meelberg Email: [email protected] Abstract. Within our capitalistic society, much if not all the music we consume is to be regarded as commodities. Musical products are subject to numerous processes, rules and regulations, one of which being copyright. Essentially, copyright enables the musical product as commodity, and as David Hesmondhalgh puts it, has become the main means of commodifying culture. A musical practice that is particularly at odds with copyright is sampling, which makes use of previously recorded material through recombination and re-contextualisation. For the use of samples, a proper copyright license must be in place, whether the sample-based song is being monetized on or released for free. However, hip hop producers often do not comply in licensing the use of copyrighted material in their music, which challenges not only the copyright regime, but also copyright as a means of commodification. Over the years, copyright has become an extensive set of rights, resulting in the criminalization of unlicensed use of samples, but not in prevention, as technological advancements have made sampling a more widespread and accessible practice. Within this thesis, the sample-based work of Madlib as released on his Madlib Invazion label is used as a case study to map the current copyright regime, the costs of licensing and the risks of unlicensed sampling.

BETWEEN THE LINES: HIP HOP AS ENGLISH CURRICULUM A THESIS Presented to the University Honors Program California State University, Long Beach In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the University Honors Program Certificate William Godbey Spring 2018 1 2 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the help and guidance of my advisor, Professor David Hernandez. This was a somewhat unorthodox topic, yet he not only took it in stride, he believed in my ability to continue the conversation on this topic in a new and insightful way. I owe him great thanks for this. I would also like to thank my family for their never-ending support and love not only through this process, but through the entirety of my college experience. Especially to my mother, who was always a phone call away if I ever needed assistance or to touch base back home. I owe you all so much for your encouragement and belief in me. and to Breanika Schwenkler, for always having my back. 3 ABSTRACT Between the Lines: Hip Hop as English Curriculum By William Godbey Spring 2018 This thesis examines the effectiveness of introducing hip hop into English curriculum at a high school level. To showcase this, this thesis presents a framework, broken up into three sections, that highlight the ways hip hop lyrics can be used to teach a variety of different literary devices, historical contexts, and how to analyze a text beyond its surface value. The three sections include Simple Literary Devices, Complex Literary Devices, and Contexts. Each section is demonstrated with a unique song and artists, to show how this framework could function as well as the versatility of talent in hip hop.

It is becoming one of the most dominant genres in the world and influencing popular culture more and more as the years go on. One of the main things that makes hip hop unique from other genres is the emphasis on the lyricist. While many other genres will have a drummer, guitarist, bassist, or keyboardist, hip hop is different because most songs are not crafted in the traditional way of a band putting music together. Because of this, the genre tends to focus on the lyrics.
