Friday night featured an excellent showing from parents and players for the weekly junior fixtures under lights on the main field. It is a fantastic spectacle on a Friday evening at Harrup Park, with 100s of young junior AFL participants enjoying their football! Saturday morning marked the start of the newly structured U14 Central Queensland Championships featuring the best young AFL talent from Mackay, Capricornia and Townsville. The championships included a testing component with the Vertical Leap, Agility Test and 20m Sprint measured under the watchful eye of coaching staff and selec- tors. The first match of the carnival was Mackay hosting Townsville, in which the boys from North of our Region proved too strong for the local U14s. Furthermore, Mackay backed up to play their second match of the championships against Capricornia who also prevailed as winners of this match. Well done to the U14 Mackay team which put in a courageous ef- - fort, coached by experienced campaigner Craig Widdowson. Series Weekend Congratulations to the six Mackay players selected in the Central QLD squad to compete at the State Championships later this month – Blake Jones North Mackay Saints, Jarrod Jones Mackay City Hawks, Cameron Chiswell Mackay City Hawks, Josh Norris Whitsun- day Sea Eagles, Tyrell Lafituanai Rookie and Adam Fedor Mackay City Hawks. The weekend consisted of plenty of Representative AFL action, with the Mackay Men‟s and Women‟s senior teams taking to the field for the first time against Townsville and Capricornia. This showcased an excellent brand of NQ football in all matches, with Mackay Men‟s Rep squad winning against Capricornia and going down to a well-drilled Townsville outfit. In an exciting first for AFL Mackay, the inaugural Tim Mulherin Women‟s AFL Tri-shield took place on new Oval 9. North Queensland too good The NQ representative team, including Michael Fisher - (Moranbah)., Nathan Peters (Saints) and Bradley Smith (Hawks) had a six-point win over SQ. 7/6/14 Assistant coach David Harding said the Mackay players shone in a great game of footy! “Our (Mackay) boys did more than hold they‟re own; they were in our best 10, certainly” he said. Each City has some amazing talent and we are very excited about the future of Women‟s AFL in North Queensland. We are so very proud of all our girls, everyone stepped up and played fantastic footy on Saturday and we would like to acknowledge some of them, firstly to our Captain Emily Morley and Vice- Captain Rahnee Vaccaneo both girls had fantastic leadership and really helped the team out with their quarter break pick me up talks. Also to our emergencies Melody Tysoe and Megan Giles who played in the spirit of the game and played for Townsville to help them out with numbers in their second game, thank you girls you made us so very proud. Secondly to our stand out stars over the two games Nicci Campbell – Moranbah Bulldogs, Lisa-Jane Millard – Northern Beaches Magpies, Kate Cowen – Moranbah Bulldogs and Alisha Matsen – Eastern Swans what an amazing display of skills each of you displayed throughout the night, awesome job girls. Alisha Matsen was award- ed the prestigious Josie Rogers Best on Ground Medal for Mackay, well done Alisha and so very well deserved. Naomi & I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that made Saturday possible, firstly Shaun Creeley for coaching the girls for the past 12 months or more which has helped build their skills with consistent training and we know the girls absolutely adore and respect you. Secondly to Dion Obst who also helped with training but also helped set up Saturday and who was also our Runner. Neil Grummitt (aka Moth) for helping with coaching on the night and sup- porting the girls. Another shout out to Toni & Greg Vollmerhause if it wasn‟t for your help Satur- day we would‟ve been without a timekeeper and scorer, to all of you, thank you, your help and support is greatly appreciated. After witnessing the fantastic skills of all the Mackay Women in Saturday‟s games from such a short amount of time training and playing we are very excited about the next Tri-City Challenge in 2015 especially after these ladies have had a full season of playing and training. The Tri-City Challenge was a fantastic round of football with all Cities enjoying every moment and with every competition there is a winner and this year the winner of the Tim Mulherin Tri- City Challenge Shield is Capricornia, winning both of their two games. Well done.
