This work aims to aid such colour design by exploring three main questions: 1. Is it possible to survey and map out what colours people perceive on facades observed under different conditions? If so, what methods can be used and it is possible to obtain results of wider application? 2. How does the perceived colour of a facade vary with changing observation conditions? What is the impact of factors such as light conditions, viewing distance and surrounding colours? 3. How does the perceived colour of the house, in different situations, differ from the colour corresponding to the specification of the sample used for selection? Are there any recurring tendencies that can be presented in a practically useful way? The work was based on about 3600 observations of painted timber and rendered facades, made by both experienced colour researchers and “naïve” school students, with various daylighting conditions, viewing distances and seasons. Colour specifications and discussions on colour attributes were made within the conceptual framework of the Natural Colour System (NCS). Inherent colour was measured by comparison with colour samples placed directly on the facade surface. Six methods for determination of perceived colour were developed and evaluated, along with a method for comparison of perceived and inherent colour. A combination of all gave the most reliable results. Results showed some recurring tendencies for perceived colour to vary with viewing conditions, but the variations were always smaller than the difference between perceived and inherent colour. Consistent variation patterns for the difference between inherent and perceived colour were found for both hue and nuance. Most obvious was that perceived colour always had less blackness than inherent colour. Possible explanations included differences between the outdoor viewing situation and the standard situation where inherent colour is defined, and the observer’s acquired sense of what colours “belong” outdoors. A fuller explanation would require further studies such as of colour perception in different light situations, and of three dimensional context effects. Results have immediate applicability however; suitably illustrated and published, the variation patterns found could be of direct practical use in exterior colour design. Arbetet baserades på cirka 3600 observationer av målade trä- och putsfasader, utförda av både erfarna färgforskare och “naiva” skol- elever, under varierande dagsljusförhållanden, betraktningsavstånd och årstider. Färgbeskrivningar och diskussioner om färgegenskaper gjordes med hjälp av begrepp knutna till The Natural Colour System (NCS). Egenfärg mättes genom jämförelse med färgprover placerade direkt på fasaytan. Sex metoder för bestämning av uppfattad färg utarbetades och utvärderades, tillsammans med en metod för jämförelse mellan egenfärg och uppfattad färg. Resultaten visade vissa genomgående tendenser för den uppfattade färgens variation med betraktningsförhållandena, men variationerna var alltid mindre än skillnaden mellan egenfärg och uppfattad färg. Konsekventa variationsmönster för skillnaden mellan egenfärg och uppfattad färg hittades för både kulörton och nyans. Tydligast var att den uppfattade färgen alltid hade mindre svarthet än egenfärgen. Möjliga förklaringar är skillnaden mellan betraktningssituationen utomhus och den standardsituation där egenfärgen definieras, och observatörens inlärda känsla för vilka färger som “hör hemma” utomhus. Mer fullständiga förklaringar kräver ytterligare studier av t.ex. färgperception i olika ljus och tredimensionella omgivnings- effekter. Resultaten är dock omedelbart tillämpbara: lämpligt illustrerade och publicerade kan de påvisade variationsmönstren komma till direkt användning vid utvändig byggnadsfärgsättning. This is a conclusion that would be dramatically affirmed if any one of us were to look upwards in clear weather from a location that is not polluted by artificial light: an increasingly rare possibility now, but one that provides a welcome regeneration of the sense of wonder. What happened when our ancient ancestors gazed instead at the sky in daylight or twilight? It is difficult to gauge from written evidence as there was such variation in the language of description among different cultures (see “Sky in a bottle” by Peter Pesic. MIT Press, 2005. ISBN 0-262-16234-2). The blue colour of a cloudless sky was described in a remarkable variety of language, but the question of its cause most often remained in the realm of a superior being. Its nature did concern the Greek philosophers but they appeared to describe surfaces and objects in the language of texture rather than colour: they did not have a word for blue. It was only during the last millennium that thinkers really tried to get to grips with the problem, with Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe all applying themselves. It was not easy however, and no real progress was made until the mid-19th century when there was a focus of the greatest scientific minds of the time on the problem of both the colour and the what was then the novel property of polarisation of the light.

They are assumed to be so disinclined due to their strong statutory welfare involvement, which “crowds-out” associational welfare production; their ethnic, cultural and religious homogeneity, which leads to a lack of minority interests in associational welfare production; and to their strong working-class organisations, which are supposed to prefer statutory welfare solutions. These assumptions are questioned here, because they cannot account for salient associational welfare production in the welfare areas of housing and child-care in two Scandinavian countries, Sweden and Norway. In order to approach an explanation for the phenomena of associational welfare production in Sweden and Norway, some refinements of current theories are suggested. First, it is argued that welfare associations usually depend on statutory support in order to produce welfare on a salient level. Second, it is supposed that any form of particularistic interest in welfare production, not only ethnic, cultural or religious minority interests, can lead to associational welfare. With respect to these assumptions, this thesis supposes that political parties are organisations that, on one hand, influence statutory decisions regarding associational welfare production, and, on the other hand, pursue particularistic interests in associational welfare production.

    REVIEWS CORTICAL MECHANISMS OF COLOUR VISION Karl R. Gegenfurtner The perception of colour is a central component of primate vision. Colour facilitates object perception and recognition, and has an important role in scene segmentation and visual memory. Moreover, it provides an aesthetic component to visual experiences that is fundamental to our perception of the world. Despite the long history of colour vision studies, much has still to be learned about the physiological basis of colour perception. Recent advances in our understanding of the early processing in the retina and thalamus have enabled us to take a fresh look at cortical processing of colour. These studies are beginning to indicate that colour is processed not in isolation, but together with information about luminance and visual form, by the same neural circuits, to achieve a unitary and robust representation of the visual world. The analysis of 34 European shirt movements reveals some common features in terms of colour, ideology and chronology. Most of them were consistent with the logic and imagery of interwar totalitarianisms, which emerged as an alleged alternative to the decaying bourgeois society and its main political creation: the Parliamentary system. Unlike liBeral pluralism and its institutional expression, shirt move- ments embody the idea of a homogeneous community, based on a racial, social or cultural identity, and defend the streets, not the Ballot Boxes, as a new source of legitimacy. They perfectly mirror the overwhelming presence of the “brutalization of politics” (Mosse) and “senso-propaganda” (Chakhotin) in interwar Europe. We conducted four experiments in order to show that this was a genuine perceptual experience rather than merely a memory association. i)The synaesthetically induced colours could lead to perceptual grouping, even though the inducing numerals or letters did not. ii)Synaesthetically induced colours were not experienced if the graphemes were presented peripherally. iii)Roman numerals were ine¡ective: the actual number grapheme was required. iv)If two graphemes were alternated the induced colours were also seen in alternation. However, colours were no longer experienced if the graphemes were alternated at more than 4 Hz. We propose that grapheme colour synaesthesia arises from `cross-wiring' between the `colour centre' area V4 or V8)and the `number area', both of which lie in the fusiform gyrus. We also suggest a similar explanation for the representation of metaphors in the brain: hence, the higher incidence of synaesthesia among artists and poets.
