The Chemical Brothers: Elektrobank (Spike Jonze 1997) and Star Guitar (Michel Gondry 2001) Once you feel you’ve got the trust in the director, then it’s their thing and they make the video. (The Chemical Brothers – Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons) For some types of music, particularly electronic dance, there is almost a sub-genre of videos in which the artist either does not appear at all or merely makes a token cameo appearance. Specialists in this are the directors Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry who have both taken music promos in new directions, effectively finding a mass audience for experimental filmmaking. Though both directors have made plenty of videos featuring the artist as central performer, their willingness to push the boundaries of the conventions of music video has led to some interesting work. In Electrobank, Jonze used the idea of the Svengali coach training a young gymnast, based on his reading about Soviet coaches of young girls preparing for the Olympic Games. His (then) girlfriend, Sofia Coppola, appeared as the main character – a high school competitor – and had to learn gymnastics, dance and ribbonwork for the part. Jonze created a back-story for her and the other characters, where she chooses this music for her routine (counterpointed by the classical music which plays as she arrives in the hall). This short film represents a melodrama in which the young gymnast battles against a leg injury with the encouragement of both her coach and her family to narrowly win at the end. It is a simple story, told visually, mainly through exchanges of looks between characters and through the routine she performs, but what makes it memorable is the context – this is a music video. -

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history. -

DOI: 10.2478/v10319-012-0002-2 A BLEND OF SOUND AND IMAGE- THE MUSIC VIDEO ELIZA CLAUDIA FILIMON University of Timişoara Email: [email protected] Abstract: The focus of this paper is first of all the issue of authorship in music videos, with reference to the division of tasks between the musician and the director. Secondly, a non-narrative musical piece in analysed - The Chemical Brothers’ Star Guitar - in relation to the narrative video created by Michel Gondry to enrich its meanings and better convey the intended message of the musicians. Keywords: authorship, musical message, video message 1. Introduction Literary critical studies have constantly been holding authorship theories under scrutiny, from voices hailing the paramount role an author has to theoretical studies committing the author to invisibility. Roland Barthes boldly denounced the limiting status of the author in the interpretation of a text, stating the necessity of abandoning the creative voice entirely: “The birth of the reader must be at the cost of the death of the Author” (qtd. in Caughie 1981:213). Michael Foucault distinguished himself from Barthes by tackling the problem from another angle. By separating the indicative and designative functions of the author’s name, he investigated the discourses surrounding and attached to the author’s name. Extending his theories of discourses from The Order of Things and The Archaeology of Knowledge, Foucault considered author as a product of discursive practices, instead of a creative subject. “In undertaking an internal and architectonic analysis of a work and in delimiting psychological and biographical references, suspicions arise concerning the absolute nature and creative role of the subject.” (qtd.
