Dorothy, March 24, 2016 For Immediate Release KEVIN MORBY SHARES NEW VIDEO/SINGLE, "DOROTHY," ANNOUNCES NEW DATES SINGING SAW OUT 4/15 ON DEAD OCEANS Today, Kevin Morby shares "Dorothy" the second single and video off his forthcoming album, Singing Saw (out 4/15 on Dead Oceans). The song, a self-reflection of Kevin's life as a musician on the road, is named after his guitar, which is in turn named after his grandmother. "Being a musician, when you find yourself at home and off of tour, all the people, places and things you encountered on tour seem like some wild dream," says Kevin. "Dorothy, my guitar, represents the people I've encountered and experiences I've had over the past 7 years of touring, because she has always been there with me." The video for "Dorothy" is a beautiful representation of this sentiment. It follows a very mobile Morby as he traverses and passes by seemingly surreal situations, the fever dream that is the road for him and so many other musicians like him. He was one of the best artists at SXSW last week, according to many, including Entertainment Weekly, who said "In a blistering Wednesday evening set at Mohawk’s House of Vans event, the former member of psych-folk outfit Woods and his backing band jammed with melodic intensity — many of those tunes from Morby’s upcoming album Singing Saw that called to mind Desire-era Bob Dylan." Something as simple as the backing "oohs" on the song "Grown Up," become transcendent. The use of toy piano at the beginning of the song could easily be cloying, but instead feels tasteful and necessary. It follows a few ​ ​ ​ ​ singles - “Don’t Underestimate Midwest American Sun,” “Wander,” and ​ ​ ​ ​ “Campfire.” The track derives from the term “sundowner,” one who feels increased ​ ​ melancholy during twilight hours. After the term was introduced to Morby by his partner Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatachee), Morby wrote this song, which became ​ ​ “the center of gravity for the rest of the album.” Its ambling fingerpicking is soothing underneath Morby’s lulling voice and notes of mellotron. “When I first moved back home to Kansas after having lived on both coasts for over a decade, I found myself - for the first time - dreading the sun going down. This was a foreign feeling for me. In both Los Angeles and New York, I resisted the day light and thrived in the night - something I have sung about many times, most notably on my album City Music.     January 19, 2016 For Immediate Release KEVIN MORBY ANNOUNCES NEW RECORD, SINGING SAW, OUT 4/15 ON DEAD OCEANS WATCH A TRAILER FOR SINGING SAW http://deadoceans.com/embed/kevinmorby_trailer.php On April 15th, Kevin Morby will release his third record, and first for Dead Oceans, Singing Saw. It is a record of duality, one that marks another stage of growth for this young, gifted songwriter with a kind face and a complicated mind. In the autumn of 2014, Kevin Morby moved to the small, hilly Los Angeles neighborhood of Mount Washington. The move would shape Singing Saw. Previous tenants at Morby’s new home happened to leave an upright piano behind, with a few mysterious pieces of sheet music and an introductory book of common chords stacked on top. Thankful to finally be in one place for an extended spell, Morby, a beginner at the piano, immediately sat at the new instrument and began composing the songs that would form Singing Saw. Alongside, he began taking long walks through the winding hills and side streets of the neighborhood each night, glimpsing views of both the skyline’s sweeping lights and the dark, dried out underbrush of the LA flora. The duality of the city itself began to shape a set of lyrical ideas that he would refine with the sparse accompaniment of piano and acoustic guitar. The arrangements of Singing Saw trace back to Morby’s experience playing in The Complete Last Waltz, a live recreation of The Band’s legendary last performance. There, Morby developed a fast friendship with producer/bandleader Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine, Yellowbirds), which led Morby to forgo recording in Los Angeles and take the nascent songs of Singing Saw to Isokon Studios in Woodstock, New York.
