The ballet tells of the spectacular deeds of Ivanushka, who with the help of the Little Humpbacked Horse, finally wins the hand of the Tsar-Maiden. A grand divertissement featuring all the different nations living together in Russia crowns the marriage celebrations. This is the first ballet based upon the popular fairy-tale by P.P. Yershov, and it was presented for the first time at the Bolshoi Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1864.
