Office of Neighborhood & Strategic Initiatives Campus Newsletter March 2017 Education The University of Houston (UH) College of Education (COE) has been partnering with Houston Independent School District (HISD) since 2015-16 to work in six high-need schools in Third Ward. Blackshear, Hartsfield, Thompson and Foster elementary schools; Cullen Middle School; and Yates High School. The goal is to raise academic achievement and student success while creating a sustainable model that can be replicated nationwide. UH students in teacher preparation, counseling and social work degree programs are assisting the schools' teachers and professional staff and learning from them. Recent New Initiatives My Home Library – This new program allows students at Blackshear elementary and the Cuney Homes public housing project to create a wish list of books for donors who can then provide a child six books for $30. After School Program – COE has partnered with the Cuney Homes and the YMCA to deliver after school and summer programs to children where they live. The 30 participants in the after school program were also provided bicycles from a generous supporter of the program. CHAMP – This mathematics and stem outreach program connects Cullen Middle School students with Natural Science and Mathematics' graduate and undergraduate tutors. Page 1 of 6 College Readiness – UH Honors College students teach SAT preparation and provide mentoring to better prepare Yates High School students for college. Jack Yates High School Mentorship Program by ENACTUS (Entrepreneurial, Action, Us) ENACTUS is a global student organization with chapters at universities in over 35 countries around the world. Under the leadership of professor Jamie Belinne, the BAUER Enactus students established this program in the fall of 2016 as a group project under the BAUER Connecting Bauer to Business Class, GENB 3302. -

Pioneering Your Art Career in Houston: Just Like Our Predecessors, Pursuing Fame, Fortune, Freedom, or a Place to Call Home Mayra Muller-Schmidt Sharpstown Middle School Architecture is the quintessential meter to convince each upcoming civilization on how to rate past cultures, deciding how advanced the examined society has been in this human denominator. Buildings can say a lot about their technical systems, what kind of math they employed, how fine their tools were, their artistic skills, their philosophy of life, their religion, and how far advanced their thinking skills were by how they used materials. My middle school magnet students are currently studying design and architecture as two separate courses. In architecture, they study about basic materials and touch upon design. In my design course, they get a better idea of what the ramifications are in designing any building by studying other factors. Besides reviewing the basic materials, artistic skills, and tools of the times, students get a better grasp of why a building has been manufactured a certain way. They begin to comprehend what technology, math, life conditions, and culture they are observing. In this unit, my students study an arranged collection of materials that will amplify and enhance their understanding of the culture in the selected time line. Providing the time for research study, plus having them practice reporting about the topic, prepares them in the skills of analyzing the whole. In doing this, as a regular class procedure, I will boost their observation and critical thinking as well. Their discussion skills will improve by sheer practice. -

Meet Me at the Flagpole: Thoughts about Houston’s Legacy of Obscurity and Silence in the fight of Segregation and Civil Right Struggles Bernardo Pohl Abstract This article focuses on the segregated history and civil right movement of Houston, using it as a case study to explore more meaningfully the teaching of this particular chapter in American history. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I remember the day very clearly. It was an evening at Cullen Auditorium at Uni- versity of Houston. It was during the fall of 2002, and it was the end of my student teach- ing. Engulfed in sadness, I sat alone and away from my friends. For me, it was the end of an awesome semester of unforgettable moments and the start of my new teaching career. I was not really aware of the surroundings; I did not have a clue about what I was about to experience. After all, I just said yes and agreed to another invitation made by Dr. Cam- eron White, my mentor and professor. I did not have any idea about the play or the story that it was about to start. The word “Camp Logan” did not evoke any sense of familiarity in me; it did not resonate in my memory. Besides, my mind was somewhere else: it was in the classroom that I left that morning; it was in the goodbye party that my students prepared for me; and it was in the uncertain future that was ahead of me. -
