There's no rest in our profession, either: No sooner have we become used to the terminology of the Curriculum than we are obliged to come to grips with the implications of the NBA: performance-based tasks, projects and internet-based research. Over the last few months, ETNI, our Internet-based discussion list, has been deluged with outpouring from teachers who are bewildered and skeptical, on the one hand, and already racing ahead to implement Ministry recommendations, on the other. We have mentioned several times before what role we believe the Forum should adopt: to summarize the daily email debates within a time-frame perspective, to provide readers with materials which will "enable" the process of change, and, finally, to provide teachers with a forum for discussion of values. Last things first. In this edition, Penny Ur takes up the cudgel against what she feels are "myths" mushrooming in the storms of constantly-changing methodology. Do you agree with her? Let us hear what you think! Secondly, we have a wealth of ideas in this edition for you to think about and use: debating, films, internet projects, webquests, lessons about poetry, and an article about the power of language. We have also included a report about the fascinating Arab-Jewish intercultural projects conducted by Simon Lichman, the plenary speaker at the winter conference. What we don't have, and which we need very badly, are volunteers to help us make the Forum even richer. Is there anyone out there who could help us summarize the extremely important ETNI discussions? write up a regular web-resource page? elicit and collect samples of tasks and projects? do book reviews? take charge of organizing practical classroom tips? collect some jokes to help us get through these troubled times? Yesterday's Jerusalem Post magazine had two articles that represent my feelings today. One is a depressing account of an attempt by Professor Mona Baker of the University of Manchester to initiate a widespread boycott of Israeli academics. The second is an inspiring story about the success of a special program at the Leo Baeck School in Haifa, which helps Ethiopian students pass their matriculation exams. That is the reality of living in Israel: highs and lows, success and discouragement, inspiration and despair, achievement and failure. We have two alternatives; one is to give up and not to care and let the negative take over and engulf us. After all, who are we to fight the world? How can we win? What can we do against such odds? The other alternative is to start small and do what can be done in our limited milieu to make a better world. As teachers we have opportunities every day to do this. I envy the staff at Leo Baeck who can say; "Of the 19 Ethiopian students who took the Matriculation exam in Hebrew, 17 passed. These are kids who were illiterate in Amharic until three years ago." I am sure that the road was rough and filled with potholes and obstacles and detours. And of course, for these kids, this is just the first stop in their academic journey.

When I arrived in Haifa, almost two weeks ago, Yigal, who took care of me, helped me with the clearances to fly to Israel and organized some of the meetings, also asked if I would like to fly to Masada. I’d read about Masada in AOPA Pilot Magazine about a year ago. I actually looked for the magazine and article before leaving home, thinking that I could contact the person in the article and fly there. But, I couldn’t find the article and then I learned that I couldn’t fly alone in Israel, so that was as far as I went. When Yigal asked me, I said yes, but it was not possible. He said with a smile, “Leave it to Yigal.” As with everything else, he made it happen! Today I flew to and landed at the lowest airstrip on Earth, 1240 feet below sea level. Not only that, but I received a guided tour and learned the history of Masada, the fort built by Herod on top of a mountain. It was fascinating. The only unfortunate part was that the weather had deteriorated a little and it was hazy. I flew there with Dror, who met me at Haifa airport when I first landed. At Mesada, we were hosted by Haviv who I had met at the presentations in Tel Aviv.

    Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Ayala Levin All rights reserved ABSTRACT Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin This dissertation explores Israeli architectural and construction aid in the 1960s – “the African decade” – when the majority of sub-Saharan African states gained independence from colonial rule. In the Cold War competition over development, Israel distinguished its aid by alleging a postcolonial status, similar geography, and a shared history of racial oppression to alleviate fears of neocolonial infiltration. I critically examine how Israel presented itself as a model for rapid development more applicable to African states than the West, and how the architects negotiated their professional practice in relation to the Israeli Foreign Ministry agendas, the African commissioners' expectations, and the international disciplinary discourse on modern architecture. I argue that while architectural modernism was promoted in the West as the International Style, Israeli architects translated it to the African context by imbuing it with nation-building qualities such as national cohesion, labor mobilization, skill acquisition and population dispersal. Introduction 3 The programs described here are located all across Israel. Some have two sessions The Basics 4 a year; others have start dates every few weeks. Some have been running for Ulpan Etzion Network 5-8 decades and have tens of thousands of successful alumni; others are new programs we established to address different groups’ needs. There are diverse options: Hebrew TAKA 9-11 language courses on kibbutzim and in cities; preparation for college or graduate Beit Brodetsky 12 studies; guidance for employment; and preparation for recruitment into the IDF. What all of the programs have in common is that they were developed to help new Ulpan Kinneret 13 young immigrants integrate into the country, taking your unique needs into account.     1 Yitzchak Calic Volunteer from the USA on the “Calanit” This is the Way it Was I lived in Naharia from 1949 – 1954 and from 1954 to this day I live in Hadera where my wife’s family lives since they came to Palestine in 1921 from Russia. I was born in Uvgheni, Rumania on July 4 1922. My father left for the US in 1930 and worked 12 hours a day, and earned $5.00 per week. He lived on $2.00 and sent my mother and their six children $3.00 per week until we got our visas in June 1932 and went to San Francisco where my father had a sister. All my family live in San Francisco to this day. I am the only one of two brothers and three sisters who made Aliya. About 1936 the Hashomer Hatzair Movement opened a branch in San Francisco whose leader was Yehoshua Zamir from Kibbutz Ein Dor (his son was killed on the Beaufort Mountain during the first Lebanese War in 1982). Two of my sisters and I joined almost immediately. I was drafted in December 1942 during WW II and was stationed in India and Burma. I was discharged in January 1946. After my discharge I went to the training farm run by the Hashomer movement in Hightstown, New Jersey, and was there until I volunteered to go to Palestine on a Hagana ship. The Hagana had bought the SS Mala, later renamed the “Calanit”. I worked as a sailor although I had no previous experience. We sailed from New York about March 1948 with 50 American volunteers and continued to Marseilles.
