COOKE, Sam Born Samuel Cook (the "e" was added later) on 1/22/1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi; raised in Chicago, Illinois. Died from a gunshot wound on 12/11/1964 (age 33); shot by a female motel manager under mysterious circumstances. Son of a Baptist minister. Sang in choir from age six. Joined gospel group the Highway Q.C.'s. Lead singer of the Soul Stirrers from 1950-56. First recorded secular songs in 1956 as "Dale Cook" on Specialty. String of hits on Keen label led to contract with RCA. Nephew is singer R.B. Greaves. Revered as the definitive soul singer.
