The popular pianist and singer-songwriter of the Lower 9th Ward was 89. During his career, this influential, yet humble performer sold more than 65 million records and had over 35 hits in the U.S. Billboard Top 40, including “Ain‟t That a Shame,” “Blueberry Hill” and “Blue Monday”. With producer and arranger Dave Bartholomew, “Fats” helped put his hometown on the rock „n‟ roll map. This shy lifelong New Orleanian influenced numerous artists including Paul McCartney and Randy Newman, who once confessed, “I was so influenced by Fats Domino that it‟s still hard for me to write a song that‟s not a New Orleans shuffle.” Domino‟s distinctive barreling triplet-based piano style, backed by a solid backbeat, was something exceptional, a step above traditional rhythm and blues. -

Fats Domino, the New Orleans rhythm-and-blues singer whose two-fisted boogie-woogie piano and nonchalant vocals, heard on dozens of hits, made him one of the biggest stars of the early rock ’n’ roll era, died on Tuesday at his home in Harvey, La., across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. He was 89. His death was confirmed by the Jefferson Parish coroner’s office. Mr. Domino had more than three dozen Top 40 pop hits through the 1950s and early ’60s, among them “Blueberry Hill,” “Ain’t It a Shame” (also known as “Ain’t That a Shame,” which is the actual lyric), “I’m Walkin’,” “Blue !1 Monday” and “Walkin’ to New Orleans.” Throughout he displayed both the buoyant spirit of New Orleans, his hometown, and a droll resilience that reached listeners worldwide. He sold 65 million singles in those years, with 23 gold records, making him second only to Elvis Presley as a commercial force. Presley acknowledged Mr. Domino as a predecessor. “A lot of people seem to think I started this business,” Presley told Jet magazine in 1957. “But rock ’n’ roll was here a long time before I came along. NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Evolutionary Ideas English Naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) published his famous theory in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, a relatively recent archetype of an evolutionary worldview going back to Ancient Greece. Greek philosophers such as Anaximander of Miletus had previously postulated the development of life from non-life and the evolutionary descent of man from animal. Taking into account the presence of fossils, Anaximander claimed that animals sprang out of the sea eons ago. The early humidity eventually evaporated, dry land emerged and, in time, adaptations occurred. Darwin simply brought something new to these old ideas (an explanatory mechanism called “natural selection”, which accumulates and preserves minor advantageous genetic mutations. Through the years, New Orleanians (as well as others around the world) have taken their stabs at commenting on (or satiring) Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Nobody likes to be made out to be a monkey, but in this 1871 caricature published in The Hornet, a satirical magazine, Darwin is pictured as “A Venerable Orang-outang”. Darwin had something very much in common with another famous person, Abraham Lincoln. First, they were both born on the very same day, February 12, 1809. Secondly, they were both ridiculed as primates. Lincoln was called “The Ape Baboon of the Prairie”; and, in an 1861 letter to his wife, General George B. McClellan called Lincoln “the original gorilla”. After the Emancipation Proclamation, cartoons like the one below depicted Lincoln as some type of a simian-like creature, delivering his document to the people. -

FREESTYLING (How the starting of an acapella group led to a musical addiction: the joy of making an unexpectedly beautiful sound together.) Author: Brian Eno, (electronic musician, music theorist & record producer) THIS IS AN article about singing. It's about you singing. I am writing this because I want to encourage you to sing. A few years ago my friend and I realised that we both loved singing but didn't do enough of it. So we started a weekly acapella group with just four members. After a year we invited others to join. We didn't insist on musical experience in fact some of our members had never sung before. Now the group has ballooned to around fifteen people. Now, the reason I'm going to try to persuade you that you should start your own acapella group is because I believe that singing is the key to long life, a good figure, a stable temperament, increased intelligence, new friends, increased self-confidence, heightened sexual attractiveness, and a sense of humour. There! That got your attention. But it wasn't all made-up: a thirty- year study conducted in Scandinavia sought to discover which activities seemed to relate to a healthy and happy old age. Three stood out: camping, dancing and singing. So what's so good about singing? Well, there are indeed physiological benefits: you use your lungs in a way that you probably don't for the rest of your day you breathe deeply and openly. And there are psychological benefits: singing aloud leaves you with a sense of levity and contentedness. -

De Reverend Charles Cook (zonder 'e' achteraan) was een hel & duivel predikant uit shithole Clarksdale, Mississippi die zichzelf letterlijk een weg naar wereldstad Chicago predikte. Hij zong altijd voor zijn sermoenen, dat begint dus al goed! 2:50 2. It Must Be Jesus (trad.) E.O. SOUTHERN TONES L68 16 The Southern Tones begin jaren 50 en It Must Be Jesus, wat achteraf zijn tune leende aan Sam Cooke's Ain't That Good News en met een beetje verbeelding tegelijk aan I've Got A Woman van Ray Charles! Zowel Cooke als Charles in één en dezelfde volzin wijst op een highway van gospel to soul. Zowel de ene als de andere kan je aansprakelijk stellen voor het verloochenen van het Woord God's, voor het omleiden van hemelse spiritual tunes naar wereldlijker paden, de ene - juist omdat hij een son of a preacher man was - misschien nog meer dan de andere. Maar zover zijn we nog niet. Het ware Woord van zwarte congregaties moet eerst zelf nog op plaat worden vastgelegd. Hier is een zeldzaam oude Steal Away (To Jesus) van het Dinwiddie Colored Quartet in 1902. 1:55 3. Steal Away (To Jesus) (Willis) Victor DINWIDDIE COLORED QUARTET L113b 6 Steal Away (To Jesus), geschreven door een bekeerde Choctaw indiaan en na dit kwartet uit Virginia door de hele gospel-wereld omarmd, te beginnen bij The Fisk Jubilee Singers, later door zowel de Highway QCs als The Soul Stirrers, de twee professionele gospel bands waar Sam Cook bij terecht kwam.
