Su construcción le fue encargada a uno de los arquitectos más célebres de la época, José Benito de Churriguera, quien ideó el espléndido conjunto urbano que hoy puede contemplarse. PRINCE HENRY THE NAVIGATOR: A LIFE PDF, EPUB, EBOOK P.E. Russell,Peter Russell | 464 pages | 10 Oct 2001 | Yale University Press | 9780300091304 | English | New Haven, United States Prince Henry The Navigator: A Life PDF Book In the early sixteenth century slaves and sugar would come together to form a tragic combination, and Russell is understandably prepared to allow his own very justifiable feelings to intrude here, when he describes the first public sale of African slaves at Lagos, on the Algarve, in A very clear and easy to grasp tour through the navigators life and achievements. Pedigrees of Some of the Emperor Charlemagne's Descendants. In , when Duarte instructed Prince Henry how to carry out his duties as commander-in-chief of the Portuguese army sent to capture Tangier, he would direct his brother to enforce the discipline, drill, self-restraint and strict compliance with orders that, he said, had been responsible for winning famous victories for the English, who had demonstrated to the world that prudence was not incompatible with chivalry. In , Gil Eanes , the commander of one of Henry's expeditions, became the first European known to pass Cape Bojador. What Eanes mistakenly called Cape Bojador was actually Cape Juby, which had already been passed by many earlier navigators. Under Henry's direction, a new and much lighter ship was developed, the caravel , which could sail further and faster. It is not clear, though, whether or not the chronicler's account of the group hypocrisy practised by Henry and his brothers in their relations with their father was really intended to be read as the praise it purports to be.

FACULTAD de FILOSOFÍA Y LETRAS DEPARTAMENTO de FILOLOGÍA INGLESA Grado en Estudios Ingleses TRABAJO DE FIN DE GRADO Elizabeth I of England through Francoist Eyes: Maligning the Other Sara Ferrero González Tutora: Ana Sáez- Hidalgo 2017-2018 1 2 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the particular narrative of the book entitled Dos Reinas. La Católica y la Protestante in which the author Nicolás González Ruiz establishes an antithesis between two of the most important female monarchs in history: Elizabeth I of England and Isabella I of Castile. On the one hand, the main focus of the dissertation is to analyze the political, historical and religious intentions existing behind the author’s singular approach to malign Queen Elizabeth of England’s image. On the other hand, the aim will be to explain why this book depicts Elizabeth derogatorily by analyzing the different techniques created during Francoist Spain, which are used in this work, disentangling the authentic and final intentions of the author. KEYWORDS: Elizabeth I, Comparative history, Francoist historiography, political and religious otherness, Nicolás González Ruiz.

This ruler's advance on Hungary was delayed after John Hunyadi's successful resistance at Belgrade. This ruler's greatest success began with construction of the Rumeli Hisari, forcing Constantine XI to call for help. Upon capturing a capital, this sultan proclaimed himself \Caesar" of Rome. For the point, name this Ottoman ruler who in 1453 took Constantinople. ANSWER: Fatih Sultan Mehmed II the Conquerer (prompt on Mehmed alone, accept Mehmed the Conquerer) (2) This empire traced its roots to Andragoras' rebellion and subsequent invasions by the Parni tribe. Queen Musa co-ruled this empire after murdering her spouse Phraates IV. The houses of Karen and Suren were thought to have originated in this empire. After invading Armenia, Osroes I was temporarily deposed as ruler of this empire as retaliation by Trajan. Augustus bargained with this empire for the return of eagle standards captured by this empire after Crassus' defeat at Carrhae. For the point, name this empire ruled by the Arsacid dynasty and succeeded by the Sassanids. ANSWER: Parthian Empire (or Parthians or Arsacid Empire before mention, prompt on \Persia(n)") (3) Elisabeth Freeman investigated one of these events labeled the \Waco Horror", pictures of which were later published as part of a report in The Crisis. Ephraim Grizzard was targeted in one of these events, during which he was dragged in front of a crowd of 10,000 people.

  • Chivalry and Crisis at the Court of Juan II of Castile: the Chivalric Writing of Alonso De Cartagena and His Contemporaries
Chivalry and Crisis at the Court of Juan II of Castile: The Chivalric Writing of Alonso de Cartagena and his Contemporaries. This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. August 2016 James Michael Ellis Trinity Hall 2 3 Declaration This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. It is not substantially the same as any that I have submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for a degree or diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution, except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. It does not exceed the prescribed word limit for the relevant Degree Committee. 4 5 Abstract This study addresses chivalric writing and court culture during the reign of Juan II of Castile and aims to examine the changing chivalric ideal in Castile during this turbulent period of Castilian history. My thesis argues that political crisis in Castile led to a corresponding crisis in Castilian chivalry as commentators at the royal court tried to correct the failings of the Castilian nobility. The study is based around the work of Alonso de Cartagena, an esteemed diplomat, translator and the Bishop of Burgos in the latter years of Juan II’s reign.

  • The Ecclesiastical Policy Op Cardinal Ximenez
THE ECCLESIASTICAL POLICY OP CARDINAL XIMENEZ THE ECCLESIASTICAL POLICY OF CARDINAL XIMENEZ By Theodore C. Henderson, M. A., B. D. A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Edinburgh University RKTRATO DE EL CAKDEN AL DON FR. FRANCISCO XIMENEZ, D E Z J X N E RO S Js-r/rn /c<il FOREWORD This Thesis is intended to be a historical survey of the ecclesiastical policy that governed the activities of Cardinal Ximenez on his becoming a public servant, following his appointment as confessor to Queen Isabella. It is not designed to be a biography, although of necessity many bio graphical notes have entered therein. For the most part, excepting in the Introduction, many facts relating to his life, while interesting, have been omitted as not germane to the study. Hence, anyone familiar with the life of Ximenez will note the absence of much material which apparently has been overlooked. He may likewise discover a great deal to which seemingly undue emphasis has been criven. If this be true, it is only because it was essential for a truer inter pretation of the Cardinal's policy or to correct several er rors that recent investigation has demonstrated to be present in many of the standard works on Ximenez and the period in which he lived. The same policy has been adopted in dealing with the gen eral history of Spain. When events or movements had a dis tinct bearing on shaping the Cardinal's activities and atti tudes, they have been considered in this relation; otherwise, they have been omitted as not essential to this work.
