GREMILLION Department of Anthropology The Ohio Stute University Columbus, OH 43210-1364 ABSTRACf.-A large body of data on several key morphological characters has been compiled through examination of collections of archaeological Chenopodium from eastern North America. Contrary to expectations based on change in certain other seed crops, the patterns of variation observed in Chenopodium do not reflect a gradual evolution of seed morphology away from the wild type. Evidence for decreasing levels of morphological variability in the evolving domesticate is like wise minimal. These findings demonstrate that the rate and character of crop evolution as revealed in the archaeological record can be expected to vary consid erably among taxa. RESUMEN.-Se ha compilado un extenso ouerpo de datos sobre varios carac teres morfol6gicos clave mediante el examen de colecciones de Chenopodium arqueol6gico del este de Norteamerica. Contrariamente a las expectativas basadas en el cambio en ciertos otms cultivos de semilla, los patrones de variaci6n obser vados en Chenopodium no reflejan una evoluci6n gradual de la morfologia de las semillas en credente distancia del tipo silvestre. La evidencia de niveles decre cientes de variabilidad morfol6gica en la especie domesticada en evoluci6n es asimismo minima. These aliens come in the form of plants, animals and microbes that have been introduced into an area from other parts of the world, and have been able to displace indigenous species. Invasive alien species are emerging as one of the major threats to sustainable development, on a par with global warming and the destruction of life-support systems. Increased mobility and human interaction have been key drivers in the spread of Indigenous Alien Species. Invasion by alien species is a global phenomenon, with threatening negative impacts to the indigenous biological diversity as well as related negative impacts on human health and overall his well-being. Thus, threatening the ecosystems on the earth. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) found that trends in species introductions, as well as modelling predictions, strongly suggest that biological invasions will continue to increase in number and impact. An additional concern is that multiple human impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems will decrease the natural biotic resistance to invasions and, therefore, the number of biotic communities dominated by invasive species will increase. India one of the 17 "megadiverse" countries and is composed of a diversity of ecological habitats like forests, grasslands, wetlands, coastal and marine ecosystems, and desert ecosystems have been reported with 40 percent of alien flora species and 25 percent out of them invasive by National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resource. -

Abstract This study presents an investigation of the botanical features, phytochemical screening (including determination of total phenolic and flavonoid contents) and DNA fingerprint profiling of Carissa macrocarpa. The current study revealed that Carissa macrocarpa is characterized chemically by the presence of various secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, saponins, triterpenoids/steroids, anthraquinones, tannins and carbohydrates at different levels in different extracts of different plant organs and the absence of cardiac glycosides and alkaloids. The plant under investigation is characterized by presence of high amounts of phenolic contents and moderate amounts of flavonoids. The plant is characterized microscopically by presence of big Ca oxalate clusters as well as forked apex and undulating wall fibers and absence of any kind of hair. Furthermore, the DNA of the plant was extracted and analyzed using six random decamer primers. A total of 55 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were obtained. The results from DNA fragmentation pattern recommend the use of primers UBC-210, UBC-405, UBC-509, UBC-54, UBC-292and UBC-123 for the fingerprinting of DNA of Carissa macrocarpa. This study will give a complementary tool to confirm the identity of Carissa macrocarpa. -

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Carissa L. is a genus of the family Apocynaceae, with about 36 species as evergreen shrubs or small trees native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Oceania. Most of Carissa plants have been employed and utilized in traditional medicine for various ailments, such as headache, chest complains, rheumatism, oedema, gonorrhoea, syphilis, rabies. So far, only nine Carissa species have been phytochemically studied, which led to the identification of 123 compounds including terpenes, flavonoids, lignans, sterols, simple phenolic compounds, fatty acids and esters, and so on. Pharmacological studies on Carissa species have also indicated various bioactive potentials. This review covers the peer- reviewed articles between 1954 and 2016, retrieved from Pubmed, ScienceDirect, SciFinder, Wikipedia and Baidu, using ‘‘Carissa’’ as search term (‘‘all fields’’) and with no specific time frame set for search. Fifteen important medicinal or ornamental Carissa species were selected and summarized on their botanical characteristics, geographical distribution, traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological activities. This is supported by in vitro antioxidant activity of the IFs and their byproducts. As such, the current review explores the potential of bioprospecting extracts from nine IFs and their byproducts as food antioxidants. Evidence presented shows that IFs have high content of bioactive compounds further translating to high antioxidant activity. Research gaps in information concerning in vitro bioactivity warrant further research to provide impetus for valorisation and food application of IFs. -

CLIMATE CHANGE AND CULTURAL RESPONSE IN THE PREHISTORIC AMERICAN SOUTHWEST Larry V. Benson and Michael S. Berry ABSTRACT Comparison of regional tree-ring cutting-date distributions from the southern Col- orado Plateau and the Rio Grande region with tree-ring-based reconstructions of the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and with the timing of archaeological stage transitions indicates that Southwestern Native American cultures were peri- odically impacted by major climatic oscillations between A.D. 860 and 1600. Site- specifi c information indicates that aggregation, abandonment, and out-migration from many archaeological regions occurred during several widespread mega- droughts, including the well-documented middle-twelfth- and late-thirteenth- century droughts. We suggest that the demographic response of southwestern Native Americans to climate variability primarily refl ects their dependence on an inordinately maize-based subsistence regimen within a region in which agricul- ture was highly sensitive to climate change.
