A Directory of Wetlands in New Zealand OTAGO CONSERVANCY Sutton Salt Lake (67) Location: 45o34'S, 170o05'E. 2.7 km from Sutton and 8 km from Middlemarch, Straith-Tari area, Otago Region, South Island. Area: 3.7 ha. Altitude: 250 m. Overview: Sutton Salt Lake is a valuable example of an inland or athalassic saline lake, with a considerable variety of saline habitats around its margin and in adjacent slightly saline boggy depressions. The lake is situated in one of the few areas in New Zealand where conditions favour saline lakes (i.e. where precipitation is lower than evaporation). An endemic aquatic animal, Ephydrella novaezealandiae, is present, and there is an interesting pattern of vegetation zonation. Physical features: Sutton Salt Lake is a natural, inland or athalassic saline lake with an average depth of 30 cm and a salinity of 15%. The lake has no known inflow or outflow. The soils are saline and alkaline at the lake margin (sodium-saturated clays), and surrounded by yellow-grey earths and dry subdygrous Matarae. The parent material is loess. Shallow boggy depressions exist near the lake, and there is a narrow fringe of salt tolerant vegetation at the lake margin. Algal communities are present, and often submerged by lake water. The average annual rainfall is about 480 mm, while annual evaporation is about 710 mm. Ecological features: Sutton Salt Lake is one of only five examples of inland saline habitats of botanical value in Central Otago. This is the only area in New Zealand which is suitable for the existence of this habitat, since in general rainfall is high, evaporation is low, and endorheic drainage systems are absent. -

BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:- Short Title. 1. This Act may be cited as the Taieri Land Drainage Act, 1907. Special drainage 2. (1.) The area described in the First Schedule hereto is hereby district constituted. constituted and declared to be a special drainage district to be called the rraieri Drainage District (hereinafter referred to as the district). (2.) Such district shall be deemed to be a district within the meaning of the Land Drainage Act, 1904, and subject to the pro visions of this Act the provisions of that Act shall apply accordingly. (3.) The district shall be subdivided into six subdivisions, with the names and boundaries described in the Second Schedule hereto. (4.) The Board may by special order from time to time alter the boundaries of any such subdivision. -

Executive summary The Taieri Plains is a low-lying alluvium-filled basin, approximately 210km2 in size. Bound to the north and south by an extensive fault system, it is characterised by gentle sloping topography, which grades from an elevation of about 40m in the east, to below mean sea level in the west. At its lowest point (excluding drains and ditches), it lies about 1.5m below mean sea level, and has three significant watercourses crossing it: the Taieri River, Silver Stream and the Waipori River. Lakes Waipori and Waihola mark the plain’s western boundary and have a regulating effect on drainage for the western part of the plains. The Taieri Plains has a complex natural-hazard setting, influenced by the combination of the natural processes that have helped shape the basin in which the plain rests, and the land uses that have developed since the mid-19th century. -

Solute, suspended sediment and bedload transportation in a pristine temperate forest, Silver Stream, New Zealand. Amanda Louise Fountain A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science, in Geography, at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand December 2012 Abstract Solutes, suspended sediment and bedload calculations are important for understanding the dynamic processes of flow pathways and geomorphic change. Large amounts of solute and sediment studies have focused on alpine environments within New Zealand with little attention given to temperate forests, an important and valued component of the New Zealand’s land use. This aims of this study is to quantify all three loads (solute, suspended sediment and bedload) for a pristine temperate forest, suitable as a future reference catchment. Over the ten-month study, 14 event flows were evaluated utilising 15-minute stage, specific conductivity and turbidity data as well as grab samples and post event reach surveys. Annual solute load was 14.85 t km-2 yr-1 (53% of total load), slightly higher than the annual suspended sediment load of 12.79 t km-2 yr-1 (45%). Bedload was a smaller proportion of total load with 0.57 t km-2 yr-1 (2%), 4% of suspended sediment. The chemical composition demonstrated a schist-dominated catchment with calcium bicarbonate waters travelling through subsurface pathways. Hysteresis analysis suggests that solutes do not respond to initial flushing of old water and are, therefore, completely dominated by dilution effects of incoming new water for each event. Suspended sediment hysteresis, however, showed variation over events. -

Identifying Freshwater Ecosystems of National Importance for Biodiversity
88 This unit comprises extensive areas of steep, mountainous country formed from rocks of widely varying ages. They include extensive older granite, greywacke, limestone and marble, and younger (Miocene to Eocene) sandstone, siltstone and limestone (Leathwick et al. 2003). It was probably much less affected by glaciation during the Last Glacial Maximum than units located further south—particularly those along the Southern Alps. The north-west Nelson region is known as an area of stonefly and caddisfly endemicity (Henderson 1985; McLellan 1990) and marks the southern limit Chadderton et al. —Creating a candidate list of Rivers of National Importance of several mayfly species widespread throughout the North Island (e.g., Zephlebia dentata, Z. versicolor: Hitchings 2001). A number of locally distributed caddisflies (Collier 1993) and four endemic genera of aquatic snails occur only in this unit (M. Haase pers. comm.). The region is also known for its high species richness of vascular plants (e.g., McGlone 1985) and large land snails (Walker 2003), suggesting that other endemic stream invertebrates probably await discovery (Leathwick et al. 2003). The unit includes the Mokihinui, Karamea, Heaphy, Aorere and Takaka Rivers, the former two rating in the top 20 New Zealand rivers by natural heritage score. This reflects the largely intact nature of their catchment vegetation, but also their environmental richness (and hence presumably ecological diversity) which is a product of their diverse geology. All provide important habitats for blue duck and contain populations of threatened fish, most notably longfin eel. The Aorere also has significant populations of threatened giant and short-jawed kokopu. -
