16 21 2013 Organization of the Year

CrossCourt News Award Southside Junior Tennis Association

The CrossCourt News Award is presented to an aggressive, well organize community based local tennis organization in the District. It honors a group who has supported and promoted the overall growth of the game, especially at a grass roots level. The award is sponsored by the CrossCourt News.

n 2011 Friends of CICS Tennis established the South Side Junior Tennis Association I (SSJT) in order to offer a low cost, community based tennis program to the South Side community. Since its inaugural season, South Side Junior Tennis has introduced more than 500 children between 5-13 years of age to the sport of tennis on the varsity courts at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Our initial tennis program, started in 2006, focused on providing a healthy lifestyle and an after/out of school option for Chi- cago International Charter School (CICS) students. We established South Side Junior Tennis in 2011 to invite children from south side communities as many have not played tennis. Our young tennis stars come from low income families & would not have access to this level of quality tennis instruction without this program. In 2013, South Side Junior Tennis expanded its Saturday tennis programs to include 2 Chicago Park District facili- ties. Additionally, over the past 2 years, South Side Junior Tennis players have been in- terviewed & seen on ABC 7 and WGN. Several South Side Junior Tennis players been awarded Tennis Opportunity Program (TOP) scholarships to enhance and improve their game.

South Side Junior Tennis believes tennis should be accessible to all families, regardless of household income. Unfortunately in many communities this simply is not the case. With the high costs of group and private instruction, tennis carries the stigma of a sport

that requires a level of investment that might limit some families. South Side Junior Ten- nis focuses on providing instructional programming that allows each child a first rate introduction from experienced instructors at a nominal fee to the families. We also be- lieve tennis is the sport of life lessons. Through tennis, children learn about sportsman- ship and healthy competition. They learn about work ethic, how to practice and to perse- vere. Children learn how to analyze information and make decisions in a split second. And, they learn to be accountable for their own actions. These are all lessons that will help them all through their lives. Please visit us at www.southsidejuniortennis.org.
