2 KTF NEWSLETTER VOL.2 2019 WONDERFUL BENEFACTORS!

TODAY, PHILANTHROPY MEANS GENEROSITY IN ALL ITS FORMS AND IS OFTEN DEFINED AS GIVING GIFTS OF “TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE” TO HELP MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR OTHER PEOPLE. THE FOLLOWING ARE CERTAINLY PHILANTHROPISTS !

GORDON MOFFATT AM

Gordon Moffatt AM is a great supporter of the Arts and Sport, in particular tennis. Over the years, he has supported many Junior Tennis Players and has given them that extra kick start to help them improve their game.

Among other past accomplishments and achievements, one of the roles Gordon relished was being the first Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne. Gordon still takes a keen interest in all things “Melbourne”.

It is Gordon’s support of KTF that I wish to highlight. Gordon’s donation this year of $100,000 has meant that many more underprivileged kids have benefited from being in KTF programs, with the boost to their self-esteem and self-confidence of paramount importance.

Thank you Gordon for your incredible generosity and support of KTF over many years.

GAUDRY FOUNDATION (GIVE 52)

In 2018, Anton & Jenny Gaudry set up their own family foundation, the Gaudry Foundation. The question was, with so many great causes, who to give to? Everyone was the answer, so, in 2020, Anton & Jenny will visit:

52 charities over 52 weeks. They are giving away $10,000 a week, so $520,000 in total, hence the name GIVE 52. For more information, visit give52.org.au

Why? Philanthropy offers a real sense of satisfaction from being able to help the community. It is this sense of enjoyment all Australians can experience. Anton & Jenny thought someone needed to start the conversation.

Kids Tennis Foundation is one of the lucky beneficiaries. Thank you just so much GAUDRY FOUNDATION….GIVE 52.

MARGARET THEOBOLD

A long time supporter and generous benefactor of KTF is Margaret Theobold. Margaret is our latest “GOLD MEDAL SUPPORTER” having donated $5,000, helping to reach many more underprivileged kids. Margaret has wonderful memories of growing up not that far away from the McNamee Family in Essendon. Her admiration for the McNamee Family combined with her love of grass roots tennis has driven her to support KTF over many years.

Thank you just so much, Margaret.

KTF NEWSLETTER VOL.2 2019 3 WONDERFUL TESTIMONIALS!

HIGH PRAISE FROM…….. COLLINGWOOD PARK STATE SCHOOL (QUEENSLAND) This year nearly 600 students inclusive of all grades from Prep to Year 6 at Collingwood Park State School had the opportunity to play tennis thanks to the Kids Tennis Foundation program. The charity-based tennis program has done an outstanding service in sustaining tennis participation across Australia and it was no different at Collingwood Park and the wider community. With the sessions conducted by Jack Whitehead and George Wong from BaseLine Tennis Coaching, students got to experience the sport through innovative and inclusive lessons as well as the chance to foster relationships with fellow students through the co-operation that is essential to not just learning, but also in navigating through real life. Many students exhibited immense joy while participating in foundational tennis, in particular when it comes to working with one another to achieve a common goal. Even in the most basic of activities they have risen to the challenge and some may even have surprised themselves with what they are able to do. There was that infectious sense of wonder and freedom that came with just having the sensation of holding a tennis racquet! And imagine the glee as they persevered to be able to rally a ball back and forth to each other with the boost to their self-esteem and self-confidence so evident. To both coaches and teachers alike it was a pleasure and a lasting memory to be able to witness these youngsters thrive in an environment they have so thoroughly embraced in such a short time. We cannot express enough the gratitude for the opportunity provided by Kids Tennis Foundation to the students of Collingwood Park State School. It has allowed the children an entryway to understanding tennis and all of its beauty. And that is a recipe for a “Game. Set. Match” with kids and the sport we love. Andrew Downes PE Co-ordinator

AND FROM…… BANYAN FIELDS PRIMARY SCHOOL Larry, over the course of the year, has built a tremendous rapport with students from our school. With maximum participation from students each week, we have found their hand eye coordination and ball skills work have increased throughout the year. This has been a wonderful program. Students really look forward to when it is their turn to be out on the court with Larry. We can’t wait to have Larry back again next year! Leigh Fankhauser PE Teacher

4 KTF NEWSLETTER VOL.2 2019 JOINT VENTURE! BUILDING RESILIENCE THROUGH TENNIS

This term, KIDS TENNIS FOUNDATION and the AUSTRALIAN TENNIS FOUNDATION, being the Charity arm of , launched the first joint pilot program of “Building Resilience through Tennis”, aimed at providing primary school students with more opportunities to develop good mental health. Together, we are using the power of tennis to inspire brighter futures in children and young people.

Today, our community experiences poor mental health at alarmingly high rates. In Australia, approximately 560,000 children and adolescence experience a mental health condition. While the onset usually occurs in mid to late adolescence, one in seven primary school children will already have developed a mental illness. By focusing on prevention and early intervention, we have the ability to change the early experiences of children, and support the development of good mental health. Beyond Blue’s Chair and former Prime Minister Julia Gillard says “It is often said that the lessons we learn as children can set the scene for how we deal with life’s challenges as adults. Therefore, we should ask ourselves how we can better prepare our young people to achieve their very best. What can we do to help children in Australia foster their own sense of resilience?” This pilot program is being conducted in three schools in Victoria. Schools participating this term are Kananook PS (Larry Muston), Morwell Central PS (Andrew Peavey) and Queen of Peace PS (Paul Marshall). The Principals at these schools have been just so supportive and certainly are “hands on” during these sessions. Visits to these schools to observe these wonderful coaches deliver this pilot have confirmed that this program is a WINNER! By working together we can equip children with a strong sense of resilience and provide them a mental health head start in their primary school years.

VALE PETER MCNAMARA

Peter McNamara’s death in July from cancer at age 64 rocked the tennis world. Peter was a great friend and supporter of Kids Tennis Foundation. He was always on hand to help promote KTF, whether it be visiting KTF (formerly Oz Tennis) disadvantaged schools, playing in many “Oz Tennis Charity Days” (pictured with Paul, Sir Cliff Richard & Darryl Somers), being a star attraction at KTF Galas and, so the list goes on. A gifted shot-maker who achieved a top-10 ranking in singles and climbed to world No.3 in doubles and, while widely admired for his on-court flair, the Melbourne-born Peter is arguably best known for his successful doubles partnership with Paul McNamee, of course wonderful Founder and Chairman of KTF. Known as the “Supermacs”, the duo claimed the 1980 and 1982 Wimbledon men’s doubles titles together, as well as the Australian Open in 1979. They were among 14 titles for one of Australia’s most successful tennis teams. “He lived life to the fullest,” said Paul of his former doubles partner and lifelong friend. “He was just great company. I mean, I was lucky to know him for over 50 years as a friend.” Winning 19 doubles titles in total, Peter also claimed three trophies with Swiss player Heinz Gunthardt and others with countryman and American . There was also an impressive singles career for the talented Victorian, who collected five singles titles and peaked at world No.7 in 1983. He had career wins over and and achieved notable Grand Slam results – reaching the Australian Open 1980 semifinals and quarter-finals of both Wimbledon (in 1981) and the (1982). Paul notes that the 1981 Hamburg title, when he defeated Connors in the final, was one of the high points of Peter’s career. “What he did in Hamburg that year when he beat Connors in the final was unbelievable, I mean the week after beating Lendl in World Cup is Dusseldorf,” said Paul. Peter was especially proud to represent Australia in , amassing a 10-11 win-loss record (9-7 in singles, 1-4 in doubles) in 10 ties between 1980 “That was his move – he finished 1981 and 1982 ranked in the top 10 in the and 1986. world, which is an amazing performance.” He was a member of the Australian team that completed a victorious Davis Cup The rise in both singles and doubles was also a testament to Peter’s stunning campaign in 1986, winning singles rubbers against New Zealand in the first all-court style. “His backhand, you know, you should make postcards out of round before Australia’s win over Sweden in the final. his backhand – it was just an incredibly aesthetic shot. There wasn’t a better backhand going around, certainly in term of its beauty,” Paul said. Suffering a serious knee injury soon after defeating Lendl to win his final singles title in Brussels in 1983, Peter retired prematurely from professional tennis at age 28. A subsequent comeback to the sport, while short-lived, incorporated the cherished Davis Cup title and a return to the Wimbledon doubles semifinals. Peter’s contribution to the sport continued throughout his lifetime. Establishing the foundations for a successful coaching career at Tennis Australia, he went on to coach Carling Bassett, , and Matt Ebden. “He was a great coach. Anyone who was coached by Macca could only say the most positive things,” said Paul. Most recently, Peter guided Chinese player from outside the top 100 to a top-20 ranking. Their four-year partnership took in Australian Open 2019, where the Australian characteristically kept his illness private. Highlighting a courageous battle, Peter continued to coach and play exhibition matches after his prostate cancer diagnosis. “He was still trying to hit a few balls,” said Paul, noting how that approach reflected McNamara’s overall passionate outlook. “He was a tennis player who loved his life (and) loved his profession.” Peter is survived by his 4 children and 5 grand children.
