Donizetti 18 EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY NETWORK THIRD INTERNATIONAL MEETING PROGRAMME AND TOURS Welcome to the Third International EAHN Meeting in Turin After the two successful International Meetings in Guimarães (2010) and Brussels (2012), we are now gathering in Turin for our Third International Conference. Turin, “the nicest village in the world” for Montesquieu, “one-company town” for so many 20th-century observers, has many histories that can speak for it. In the last fifteen years, Turin’s cultural offer and its tourist accommodation capacity have widely increased. The city is reorganizing its economic identity also by promoting and being host to an array of cul- tural activities, exhibitions and conventions related to the cultural heritage, considered in its broad range of artistic, architectural, environmental as- sets and resources. World-famous events have reshaped Turin’s public im- age. The Winter Olympic Games (2006), the exhibition of the Holy Shroud (2010), and the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy (2011), put much energy into the connection between mega-events and cultural elaboration, through an extensive programme of exhibitions, historic symposia and thematic itineraries. Turin is home to a lively community of historians and has attracted the inter- est of architectural and urban historians during most of the 20th century. The city’s baroque architecture gained the early attention of scholars such as Albert Erich Brinckmann, who in 1931 dedicated to Turin and Pied- mont his book Theatrum novum Pedemontii: Ideen, Entwürfe und Bauten von Guarini, Juvarra, Vittone.

When you fight, you are not thinking as you are inebriated with blood, and by the sight of so many dead and wounded around you, however after the battle, when compassion and pain take the place of indifference, then... hoi! He later reported, in a book titled “A memory of Solferino ”, that in fact it took 3 days to bury all the dead. Heir of the Month: The Second Year (2014-15) www.heirstothethrone-project.net 2 H Preface As we look back on another year of our „Heirs to the Throne“ project, we find that our topic really is a gift that keeps on giving. The members and friends of the St Andrews team have written another dozen “Heir of the Month” essays and the variety of the topics addressed and perspectives chosen has proved to be as colourful as ever. Our monthly offerings have dealt with countries as far-flung as Mexico, Portugal, Greece and Spain – along with old favourites such as France, Prussia, Italy and Britain – and have gazed through analytical lenses as diverse as motor cars, sepulchral monuments, choreographed travel, marriage diplomacy or literary responses to royal topics. We are happy to collate our second clutch of twelve essays into another freely available “Royal Annual” for ease of access and to mark the ongoing commitment of our AHRC- funded venture to communicating our work and our ideas to a wide circle of readers with an interest in the history of the monarchical nineteenth century. We are delighted to take this opportunity to thank the AHRC and the School of History for their continued support of our activities. If the cake is too small many guests will not eat it, if it is too large it may nauseate. So why not to just make a cake based on the exact number of guests? Mmmm... have you ever tried to make a cake of an exact size? Especially in Italy? Impossible: some invites could be not come or bring other friends with them, someone might want a second slice, or could be in excess for others. Impossible! And then? Well, luckily I do not have to make a cake right now, but I have to thank. And I will try to thank people who really helped me and supported me during these years of PhD, so that each of them could have a generous slice of cake, without be nauseated! To understand why PhD students - as also undergraduates - thank people in their thesis, you must first understand what is the entire process that leads to the end of an academic term.

  • Travel, Modernity and Rural Landscapes in Nineteenth Century Liguria
1 Travel, modernity and rural landscapes in nineteenth century Liguria Pietro Piana1, Charles Watkins2, Ross Balzaretti3 1 School of Geography, University of Nottingham, [email protected] 2 School of Geography, University of Nottingham, [email protected] 3 Department of History, University of Nottingham, [email protected] Abstract New roads and later railways were essential for the modernisation and rapid economic development of North-western Italy in the early nineteenth century. The new routes also encouraged an increasing number of foreign travellers to visit the region. They opened up fresh tracts of countryside and provided novel viewpoints and points of interest; many travellers took the opportunity to record these views with topographical drawings and watercolours. In this paper we make use of some of these views to examine how the modernized transport routes released new places to be celebrated by tourists and became themselves features and objects of especial interest and comment. We examine the works of three artists, one English and two Italian, who depicted landscapes of contrasting rural Ligurian landscapes. Their drawings and prints are contextualised and interpreted with maps, field data, archival documents and contemporary descriptions of roads and railways by travellers and in guidebooks. 2 I Arching around the Mediterranean, in the North-western corner of Italy, Liguria had been historically an important route for travellers going south. In the eighteenth century, Genoa was one of the principal destinations of the Grand Tour and in the nineteenth century, after the end of the Napoleonic wars, the number of visitors increased dramatically.1 Travellers were encouraged by new roads and railways which opened up additional landscapes with novel vantage points.

  • Heir of the Month: May 2015
HEIR OF THE MONTH: MAY 2015 Umberto, Amedeo and Oddone di Savoia: Princes on the Road Maria-Christina Marchi ‘1861, September 16, Monday: Monza, Milan and Desenzano. His Majesty having granted his sons the permission to travel in order to visit the battlegrounds at San Martino, Emilia, Umbria, the Marche and Toscana, the Royal Highnesses, accompanied by their Governatore, Cav. Rossi, and by the Ufficiali d’ordinanza, Sir Perrone, Knight of San Marzano, as well as by Professor Sismonda, set off from Monza at 4 ¼ a. m. on the sixteenth by carriage so as to reach the train station that leads from Milan to Desenzano. They met SE General La Marmora, Count Pasolini, Sir Beretta and Colonel Bariola at the jetty, whose job it was to accompany the Royal Highnesses to the battlefield of San Martino and narrate to them that great day which bestowed much glory on our armies.’ This note, written by one of their attendants, chronicles the journey the princes undertook to visit recently annexed provinces in the wake of Italian unification. Crown Prince Umberto (1844-1900) and his brothers Amedeo (1845-90) and Oddone (1846- 66)* had suddenly become princes in a much larger kingdom that was composed of regions wholly unknown to them. The itinerary of the 1861 tour (Archivio di Stato di Torino, Sezione Corte) 1 HEIR OF THE MONTH: MAY 2015 Umberto in particular, as heir to these new lands, needed to gain better knowledge of the various cultures and regions – and the people living there should become more familiar with their new royal family and especially with their future king.

Carlo Bossoli (Davesco 1815 - Turin 1884) Coste della Crimée, c.1842 with Travellers in a Mountainous Landscape (verso) watercolour 21.5 x 27 cm (8½ x 10⅝ in) A mother and daughter look out from the banks of a river in Crimea. The tributary has run almost completely dry, leaving an unsuspecting boat stranded on its bed. The scene appears to have mesmerised the two, as well as catching the attention of others who have approached the vessel to examine it, their reflections caught on the glistening surface of the riverbed. The woman’s son, his dog sniffing around nearby, appears to be less interested in the goings on, and with his back to the scene looks towards his mother as though pleading with her to move on. Her headdress and shoes, pointed at the toe, suggest that she may be a Crimean Tatar. Beside the family group lies another of the river’s discarded contents, a wooden door. The fluid, wet brushstrokes of the muddied waters surrounding it stand in contrast to the dry brush swept across the surface of the paper to create the textured surface of the riverbank. The present watercolour is believed to have been executed in c.1842. Carlo Bossoli visited Crimea several times between 1828 and 1843, most extensively from 1840 to 1842. His watercolours and gouaches executed in Crimea are particularly decorative and detailed, and depict a variety of scenes taken from daily life, such the streets of Sevastopol, the port of Yalta, or a simple snapshot as exemplified in Coste della Crimée.
