Museum for Nordiske Oldsager, Det Kgl. Teater, Den Kgl. Malerisamling og Akademiet i Sorø). Debattens omdrejningspunkt var spørgsmålet om, hvordan man fik disse enevældige institutioner med ind i folkestyrets tidsalder – og om de overhovedet skulle med. De var levn fra den gamle verden, der kunne forekomme umulige at omstille til den nye. Skulle folkestyret, med forfatter og museumsmanden Peter Seebergs (1925-1999) ord, overtage ’Hans Majestæts gamle unoder’?1 I enevældens tid havde institutionerne, arbejdet med og nydelsen af kulturarven, i høj grad været et dyrt, elitært hovedstadsfænomen. Krigsminister A.F. Tscherning (1795-1874) beklagede derom, at selvom institutionerne kunne betragtes som undervisningsanstalter, var de dog kun til for København.2 Hvis de ikke kunne omlægges til at blive ‘folkelige’, ville de have svært ved at overleve overgangen til den nye tid. Introduction Karen Blixen’s short story ‘Sorrow-Acre’, published in Winter’s Tales (1942) takes place at a Danish country estate in the late 18th century. During a conversation between the baron and his nephew, they discuss Classical versus Norse mythol- ogy. The young man has discovered the Norse myths through a recently pub- lished work: ‘He mentioned the name of the author, Johannes Ewald, and recited a couple of the elevated verses.’ The book he refers to is Ewald’s play The Death of Balder (1775). He goes on to praise the Norse gods: ‘And I have wondered, while I read,’ he went on after a pause, still moved by the lines he himself had declaimed, ‘that we have not till now understood how much our Nordic my- thology in moral greatness surpasses that of Greece and Rome. If it had not been for the physical beauty of the ancient gods, which have come down to us in marble, no modern mind could hold them worthy of worship.

    Hans Christian Andersen and his Social Reception in Austria Sven Hakon Rossel Professor, University of Vienna Abstract This article documents Hans Christian Andersen’s gradual development from being a young unknown Danish writer to becoming socially accepted and acknowledged as an integral part of Austrian social and artistic life. The point of departure is his second novel Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler) of which two chapters are set in Vienna. This process of so-called acculturation, i.e. the appropriation of various social, psychological and cultural elements of the country visited, begins with Andersen’s first stay in Austria in 1834 – the first of altogether six visits – and finds its climax in 1846, when he is invited to give a reading of his fairy tales at the imperial castle in Vienna. It is noteworthy that this process to a large degree was the result of a planned strategy on Andersen’s behalf. Before arriving in Vienna, he procured letters of recommendation and upon arrival he systematically made friends with the city’s most important artistic and intellectual personalities. Another strategic move, of course, was to choose Vienna as a partial setting for his most successful novel in the German-speaking world. Introduction: Only a Fiddler In Hans Christian Andersen’s second novel, Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler), a Bildungsroman like his other five novels, one of the characters, a Danish physician living in the Austrian capital Vienna, compares Austria with Denmark and arrives at this conclusion: The inhabitants of Vienna possess so much, both that which is good and that which is petty- minded, they have this in common with the inhabitants of Copenhagen, the difference being that the Viennese possess more liveliness.

    Marie Žúborová - Němcová: Encyklopédia kresťanského umenia Daňo Juraj - (2007) do výtvarného života vstúpil tesne po 2. svetovej vojne; v tvorbe prekonal niekoľko vývojových zmien, od kompozícií dôsledne a detailne interpretujúcich farebné a tvarové bohatstvo krajiny, cez krajinu s miernou farebnou, tvarovou i rukopisnou expresionistickou nadsádzkou, až ku kompozíciám redukujúcim tvary na ich geometrickú podstatu; tak v krajinárskych, ako aj vo figurálnych kompozíciách, vyskytujúcich sa v celku jeho tvorby len sporadicky, farebne dominuje modro – fialovo – zelený akord; po prekonaní experimentálneho obdobia, v ktorom dospel k výrazne abstrahovanej forme na hranici informačného prejavu, sa upriamoval na kompozície, v ktorých sa kombináciou techník usiloval o podanie spoločensky závažnej problematiky; vytvoril aj celý rad monumentálno-dekoratívnych kompozícií; od roku 1952 bol členom východoslovenského kultúrneho spolku Svojina, zároveň členom skupiny Roveň; v roku 1961 sa stal členom Zväzu slovenských výtvarných umelcov; od roku 1969 pôsobil ako umelec v slobodnom povolaní; v roku 1984 mu bol udelený titul zaslúžilého umelca J.     Greek gods in Northern costumes: Visual representations of Norse mythology in 19th century Scandinavia Hans Kuhn Australian National University Northern mythology, long the province of antiquarians and scholars, was in the 19th century claimed as a regional heritage in the Scandinavian countries, and the rising tide of nationalism and an eagerness to extend education to all classes combined to make it a focus not only of literary efforts but also of pictorial representation. This was not easy, for the academies in Copenhagen and Stockholm, where artists were trained, had their own entrenched traditions deriving from the period of the Renaissance. Figure painting and sculpture were the most valued genres, and the subject matter was to be taken, in academies all over Europe, either from the Bible (or, in Catholic countries, saints’ lives) or from Classical history and mythology. In the second half of the 18th century, Winckelmann’s writings and the excavations at Pompei and Herculaneum strengthend the Greco-Roman connection and led to Neoclassicism becoming the dominant style for a few decades into the 19th century. 209 210 Hans Kuhn The lucid rationality and practicality of the Enlightenment period produced cravings for things ancient, dark and mysterious, as the success of Bishop Percy’s Reliques and Macpherson’s Ossian showed; Celtic and Nordic were seen as part of the same misty Northern world. The Dane Abildgaard and the Swiss Füssli/Fusely, friends in Rome in the 1770s, painted a number of scenes from Ossian but occasionally also from Nordic mythology. Abildgaard’s scene from Snorri’s account of the creation of the world shows a Michelangelesque giant †mir suckled by Au›humla, a Brahmin-type cow licking a salty rock from which the first human being, Bure, will emerge (1).
