MacLean1 Abstract Collections of aquatic invertebrates from the Grand Portage Indian Res- ervation (Cook County, Minnesota) during 2001 – 2012 resulted in 9 families, 43 genera and 112 species of aquatic and semiaquatic Coleoptera. The Dytisci- dae had the most species (53), followed by Hydrophilidae (20), Gyrinidae (14), Haliplidae (8), Chrysomelidae (7), Elmidae (3) and Curculionidae (5). The families Helodidae and Heteroceridae were each represented by a single spe- cies. Seventy seven percent of species were considered rare or uncommon (1 - 10 records), twenty percent common (11 - 100 records) and only three percent abundant (more than 100 records). -

Bininda-Emondsa aInstitut fu¨r Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie, FSU Jena, Germany bMuseo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain Received 14 October 2005; accepted 17 May 2006 Abstract A supertree for Adephaga was reconstructed based on 43 independent source trees – including cladograms based on Hennigian and numerical cladistic analyses of morphological and molecular data – and on a backbone taxonomy. To overcome problems associated with both the size of the group and the comparative paucity of available information, our analysis was made at the genus level (requiring synonymizing taxa at different levels across the trees) and used Safe Taxonomic Reduction to remove especially poorly known species. The final supertree contained 401 genera, making it the most comprehensive phylogenetic estimate yet published for the group. Interrelationships among the families are well resolved. Gyrinidae constitute the basal sister group, Haliplidae appear as the sister taxon of Geadephaga+ Dytiscoidea, Noteridae are the sister group of the remaining Dytiscoidea, Amphizoidae and Aspidytidae are sister groups, and Hygrobiidae forms a clade with Dytiscidae. Resolution within the species-rich Dytiscidae is generally high, but some relations remain unclear. Trachypachidae are the sister group of Carabidae (including Rhysodidae), in contrast to a proposed sister-group relationship between Trachypachidae and Dytiscoidea. Carabidae are only monophyletic with the inclusion of a non-monophyletic Rhysodidae, but resolution within this megadiverse group is generally low. Non-monophyly of Rhysodidae is extremely unlikely from a morphological point of view, and this group remains the greatest enigma in adephagan systematics. -

Its rediscovery is reported, and its male copulatory organ is illustrated for the first time. Although this aberrant species can be assigned clearly to the genus Colymbetes CLA1RVILLE, its position within the genus remains to be explored. Key words: Coleoptera, Dytiscidac, Colymbetes miniums, China. Introduction Colymbetes CLAIRVILLE, 1806 is a small Holarctic dytiscid genus with 21 species (NILSSON & HOLMEN 1995, NILSSON 2001). The beetles usually inhabit stagnant water, including over- flooded river margins and pools in temporary streams, or wadis. Adults are elongate, moderately large and usually show a unique elytral sculpturing consisting of parallel transverse strioles. According to ZIMMERMAN (1981) the phylogenetic relationship between Colymbetes and Rlumtus is a close one. Moreover, that author stressed that Colymbetes minimus represents the most basally situated species among the genus and is remarkably similar to Rhantus. Colymbetes minimus is an extremely rarely collected high altitude endemic of Tibet and Qinghai. Its description by ZAITZEV (1908) was based on specimens collected by S. -

The trials and tribulations of the search for these fascinating insects are described in a recent article in British Wildlife (Sutton 2017). This article also reveals that some of the medium-sized species of interest, such as those of the genus Rhantus have been included, as have species from other groups, including the raft spider, Dolomedes plantarius (Clerck) and a rare wasp, Chalcis sispes (L.), parasitic on soldierflies (Stratiomyidae), which collectively highlight the conservation importance of some of the very special habitats in which they may be found. S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

Both morphology and DNA is used to test species boundaries, in particular whether newly collected material from the Tsaratanana mountains in the north represent a new species or are conspecific with Rhantus manjakatompo Pederzani and Rocchi 2009, described based on a single male specimen from the central Ankaratra moun- tains. -

RIBERA Abstract Five species of Rhantus DEJEAN, 1833 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Colymbetinae) occur in New Caledo- nia. Four of these, all belonging to the R. pacificus group (sensu BALKE 1993) are endemic: R. alutaceus FAUVEL, 1883, R. monteithi BALKE, WEWALKA, ALARIE & RIBERA, 2007, R. novaecale- doniae BALFOUR-BROWNE, 1944, and R. poellerbauerae BALKE, WEWALKA, ALARIE & RIBERA, 2007. The fifth species, R. suturalis MACLEAY, 1825 is a member of the R. suturalis species group and very wide-spread in the Old World. A taxonomic overview, including the known larvae of the endemic species, is provided. Key words: Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Colymbetinae, Rhantus, taxonomy, New Caledonia. Introduction The dytiscid subfamily Colymbetinae is widely distributed throughout the Pacific. This subfamily contains ten genera with ca. 130 species world-wide (NILSSON 2001). Two of these genera occur in the Pacific Region: the monotypic New Guinea endemic genus Carabdytes BALKE et al. and the cosmopolitan genus Rhantus DEJEAN (BALKE 2001). The members of the genus Rhantus can be subdivided into two groups: the R. suturalis group and the R. pacificus group (BALKE 1993, 1998, 2001, PECK & BALKE 1993), both occurring in New Caledonia (BALKE et al. 2007), from where five species of Rhantus are presently known. Here, we summarize the taxonomic results relevant for New Caledonia following BALKE et al. (2007), who provided a taxonomic revision of the New Caledonian and Fijian fauna, including larvae when available.
