MacLean1 Abstract Collections of aquatic invertebrates from the Grand Portage Indian Res- ervation (Cook County, Minnesota) during 2001 – 2012 resulted in 9 families, 43 genera and 112 species of aquatic and semiaquatic Coleoptera. The Dytisci- dae had the most species (53), followed by Hydrophilidae (20), Gyrinidae (14), Haliplidae (8), Chrysomelidae (7), Elmidae (3) and Curculionidae (5). The families Helodidae and Heteroceridae were each represented by a single spe- cies. Seventy seven percent of species were considered rare or uncommon (1 - 10 records), twenty percent common (11 - 100 records) and only three percent abundant (more than 100 records). -

BMC Evolutionary Biology 2014, 14:5 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/14/5 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access The utility of CAD in recovering Gondwanan vicariance events and the evolutionary history of Aciliini (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) Rasa Bukontaite1,2*, Kelly B Miller3 and Johannes Bergsten1 Abstract Background: Aciliini presently includes 69 species of medium-sized water beetles distributed on all continents except Antarctica. The pattern of distribution with several genera confined to different continents of the Southern Hemisphere raises the yet untested hypothesis of a Gondwana vicariance origin. The monophyly of Aciliini has been questioned with regard to Eretini, and there are competing hypotheses about the intergeneric relationship in the tribe. This study is the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis focused on the tribe Aciliini and it is based on eight gene fragments. The aims of the present study are: 1) to test the monophyly of Aciliini and clarify the position of the tribe Eretini and to resolve the relationship among genera within Aciliini, 2) to calibrate the divergence times within Aciliini and test different biogeographical scenarios, and 3) to evaluate the utility of the gene CAD for phylogenetic analysis in Dytiscidae. Results: Our analyses confirm monophyly of Aciliini with Eretini as its sister group. Each of six genera which have multiple species are also supported as monophyletic. The origin of the tribe is firmly based in the Southern Hemisphere with the arrangement of Neotropical and Afrotropical taxa as the most basal clades suggesting a Gondwana vicariance origin. However, the uncertainty as to whether a fossil can be used as a stem-or crowngroup calibration point for Acilius influenced the result: as crowngroup calibration, the 95% HPD interval for the basal nodes included the geological age estimate for the Gondwana break-up, but as a stem group calibration the basal nodes were too young. -

In particular, the position 15 of Cicindelidae (tiger beetles) appears problematic, as recent studies have found them either 16 within the Hydradephaga based on mitogenomes, or together with several unlikely relatives 17 in Geadeadephaga based on 18S rRNA genes. We newly sequenced nine mitogenomes of 18 representatives of Cicindelidae and three ground beetles (Carabidae), and conducted 19 phylogenetic analyses together with 29 existing mitogenomes of Adephaga. Our results 20 support a basal split of Geadephaga and Hydradephaga, and reveal Cicindelidae, together 21 with Trachypachidae, as sister to all other Geadephaga, supporting their status as Family. We 22 show that alternative arrangements of basal adephagan relationships coincide with increased 23 rates of evolutionary change and with nucleotide compositional bias, but these confounding 24 factors were overcome by the CAT-Poisson model of PhyloBayes. The mitogenome + 18S 25 rRNA combined matrix supports the same topology only after removal of the hypervariable 26 expansion segments. -
Dytiscid Water Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) of the Yukon
Dytiscid water beetles of the Yukon FRONTISPIECE. Neoscutopterus horni (Crotch), a large, black species of dytiscid beetle that is common in sphagnum bog pools throughout the Yukon Territory. 491 Dytiscid Water Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) of the Yukon DAVID J. LARSON Department of Biology, Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada A1B 3X9 Abstract. One hundred and thirteen species of Dytiscidae (Coleoptera) are recorded from the Yukon Territory. The Yukon distribution, total geographical range and habitat of each of these species is described and multi-species patterns are summarized in tabular form. Several different range patterns are recognized with most species being Holarctic or transcontinental Nearctic boreal (73%) in lentic habitats. Other major range patterns are Arctic (20 species) and Cordilleran (12 species), while a few species are considered to have Grassland (7), Deciduous forest (2) or Southern (5) distributions. Sixteen species have a Beringian and glaciated western Nearctic distribution, i.e. the only Nearctic Wisconsinan refugial area encompassed by their present range is the Alaskan/Central Yukon refugium; 5 of these species are closely confined to this area while 11 have wide ranges that extend in the arctic and/or boreal zones east to Hudson Bay. Résumé. Les dytiques (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) du Yukon. Cent treize espèces de dytiques (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) sont connues au Yukon. Leur répartition au Yukon, leur répartition globale et leur habitat sont décrits et un tableau résume les regroupements d’espèces. La répartition permet de reconnaître plusieurs éléments: la majorité des espèces sont holarctiques ou transcontinentales-néarctiques-boréales (73%) dans des habitats lénitiques. Vingt espèces sont arctiques, 12 sont cordillériennes, alors qu’un petit nombre sont de la prairie herbeuse (7), ou de la forêt décidue (2), ou sont australes (5). -

Buschbeck, Ph.D. Abstract Stemmata, the eyes of holometabolous insect larvae, vary greatly in number, structure and task. The stemmata of the Sunburst Diving Beetle, Thermonectus marmoratus, are among the most sophisticated. The predatory larvae have six eyes and a potentially light-sensitive spot (eye spot) adjacent to the stemmata. The forward-pointing tubular eyes Eye 1 (E1) and Eye 2 (E2) are involved in prey capture, and possess a biconvex lens, a cellular crystalline cone-like structure, and tiered retinal tissue. A distal and a proximal retina can be distinguished, which differ not only in morphology but possibly also in function. E1 has an additional retina which runs medially alongside the crystalline cone-like structure. Using transmission electron microscopic preparations, I described the ultrastructure of the retinas of the principal eyes E1 and E2. The proximal retinas are composed of photoreceptors with predominantly parallel microvilli, and neighboring rhabdomeres are oriented approximately orthogonally to each another. This rhabdomeric arrangement is typical for eyes that are polarization sensitive. A similar organization is observed in a portion of the medial retina of E1, but not in either of the distal retinas. -

BALKE Abstract Colymbetes minimus ZAITZEV (Coleoptera: Dytiscidac) is a high altitude species confined to Tibet and Qinghai. Its rediscovery is reported, and its male copulatory organ is illustrated for the first time. Although this aberrant species can be assigned clearly to the genus Colymbetes CLA1RVILLE, its position within the genus remains to be explored. Key words: Coleoptera, Dytiscidac, Colymbetes miniums, China. Introduction Colymbetes CLAIRVILLE, 1806 is a small Holarctic dytiscid genus with 21 species (NILSSON & HOLMEN 1995, NILSSON 2001). The beetles usually inhabit stagnant water, including over- flooded river margins and pools in temporary streams, or wadis. Adults are elongate, moderately large and usually show a unique elytral sculpturing consisting of parallel transverse strioles. According to ZIMMERMAN (1981) the phylogenetic relationship between Colymbetes and Rlumtus is a close one. Moreover, that author stressed that Colymbetes minimus represents the most basally situated species among the genus and is remarkably similar to Rhantus. Colymbetes minimus is an extremely rarely collected high altitude endemic of Tibet and Qinghai. Its description by ZAITZEV (1908) was based on specimens collected by S. -
