The pattern of distribution with several genera confined to different continents of the Southern Hemisphere raises the yet untested hypothesis of a Gondwana vicariance origin. The monophyly of Aciliini has been questioned with regard to Eretini, and there are competing hypotheses about the intergeneric relationship in the tribe. This study is the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis focused on the tribe Aciliini and it is based on eight gene fragments. The aims of the present study are: 1) to test the monophyly of Aciliini and clarify the position of the tribe Eretini and to resolve the relationship among genera within Aciliini, 2) to calibrate the divergence times within Aciliini and test different biogeographical scenarios, and 3) to evaluate the utility of the gene CAD for phylogenetic analysis in Dytiscidae. Results: Our analyses confirm monophyly of Aciliini with Eretini as its sister group. Each of six genera which have multiple species are also supported as monophyletic. The origin of the tribe is firmly based in the Southern Hemisphere with the arrangement of Neotropical and Afrotropical taxa as the most basal clades suggesting a Gondwana vicariance origin. However, the uncertainty as to whether a fossil can be used as a stem-or crowngroup calibration point for Acilius influenced the result: as crowngroup calibration, the 95% HPD interval for the basal nodes included the geological age estimate for the Gondwana break-up, but as a stem group calibration the basal nodes were too young. -

NlLSSON Abstract A series of corrections and additions are given to the World Catalogue of Dytiscidae (Coleoptera) recently published as Volume 3 of the World Catalogue of Insect Series (NlLSSON 2001). A type species is selected of Badynectus SEIDLITZ, 1872. The preoccupied name Hydroporus trimaculatus THEOBALD, 1937, is replaced with Hydroporus theobaldi nomen novum. Introduction My World Catalogue of the beetle family Dytiscidae (NlLSSON 2001) was published on November 22 and included names published up to September 30 the same year. VAZIRANI Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta (With 4 Text-figures) INTRODUCTION The family Dytiscidae consists of about 3000, species and is dis tributed all over the world. We have in India about 200 species which have been recently revised/reviewed in a series of papers by Vazirani (1965-1971.) The genus Cybister Curtis is generally considered to be the most highly evolved member of the family Dytiscidae. Sharp (1882) pointed out that the genus Cybister replaces the well known pala earctic genus Dytiscus Linnaeus, in the Oriental Region. Considerable work has been done on the morphology, and life history of the .well known palaearctic species, Dytiscus marginalis Linn. Several authors have contributed to the publication of a two volume monograph Korschelt (1923-24) which deals with iife-history, mor phology, anatomy, systematics etc. of the adult and larvae of this species. In this famous work the portion dealing with chitinous struc ture of the adult has been contributed by Buhlmann (Vol. 1 : 16-79) Balfour-Browne. (1932) has also dealt with the same subject incor porating findings of earlier workers. There is however lack of corresponding work on our commonest species viz. Cybister tripunctatus asiaticus Sharp. The author under took this problem as a part of his M. Sc. dissertation which was sub mitted in 1956, for the award of degree, by the University of Bombay. The account of the morphology of the larva was published by the author (1964). -

59.57.6 (75.9) Article IV.-INSECTS OF FLORIDA Va. SUPPLEMENTARY NOTES ON THE WATER BEL*W,r BY W. S. BLATCHLEY In the fifth paper1 of a series on the Insects of Florida, Cks. W. Leng and Andrew J. Mutchler give1 a list of all the species of the ¶fnilies Dytiscidle, Haliplidae, Gyrinidae, Hydrophilidse, Sphseridiidme, &W4 arni- da, known to the authors to occur in Florida, with full n --their distribution within that state and keys to the species of the genera. They refer to the writer quite often as furnishing distribution and also descriptions of several species. The data for t of these notes were obtained and given to Mr. Leng some years ago.> More extended collecting in the southern part of the state and more careful study of the species taken have furnished additional facts con- cerning the distribution of many of the species listed, and have also led to a change of opinion regarding the names of some of the species. The, following notes, additions, and corrections are therefore offered as sup- plementary to the valuable paper of Leng and Mutchler, the species added being Copelatus debilis Sharp, Copelatus chevrolati australis Schaeffer, Agabus semivittatus LeConte, Derallus altus (LeConte) and the new species herein described, while Dineutes emarginatus (Say) should be stricken from their list. The collecting by the writer in Florida has been limited to the period between October 20 and April 15 and has extended over a range of seven years.2 While the majority of Florida beetles which pass the winter in the adult stage are, at that season, inactive and more or less in a state of hibernation, this is not true of the water beetles and they can be taken in numbers at any time. -

Although the practice of entomophagy is widespread in the region, a detailed account regarding the utilization of edible insects is still lacking. The present study documents the existing knowledge of entomophagy in the region, emphasizing the currently most consumed insects in view of their marketing potential as possible future food items. Assessment was done with the help of semi-structured questionnaires, which mentioned a total of 106 insect species representing 32 families and 9 orders that were considered as health foods by the local ethnic groups. While most of the edible insects are consumed boiled, cooked, fried, roasted/toasted, some insects such as Cossus sp., larvae and pupae of ants, bees, wasps, and hornets as well as honey, bee comb, bee wax are consumed raw. Certain edible insects are either fully domesticated (e.g., Antheraea assamensis, Apis cerana indica, and Samia cynthia ricini) or semi-domesticated in their natural habitat (e.g., Vespa mandarinia, Vespa soror, Vespa tropica tropica, and Vespula orbata), and the potential of commercialization of these insects and some other species as a bio-resource in Nagaland exists. -

The three larval instars of Megadytes (M.) carcharias Griffini and M. (Trifurcitus) fallax (Aubé) are described and illus- trated in detail for the first time, with an emphasis on morphometry and chaetotaxy of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment and urogomphi. The ground plan of chaetotaxy of the genus Megadytes Sharp is described and illustrated based on three of the four recognised subgenera. First-instar larvae of Megadytes are characterised by the presence of a large number of additional sensilla on almost every part of the body. Primary chaetotaxy of the subgenera (Bifurcitus Brinck based on third instar) is very similar, with few differences including (1) shape of the setae on the anterior margin of the frontoclypeus; (2) presence or absence of a ring of multi-branched setae on distal third of mandible; and (3) number of setae on the urogomphus. A cladistic analysis of Dytiscidae, based on 169 larval characters and 34 taxa, indicates that: (1) Trifurcitus Brinck deserves generic status; (2) Cybistrini are not closely related to Hydroporinae; (3) the absence of a galea in Cybistrini is a secondary loss independent of that in Hydroporinae; (4) Cybistrini are well supported by many characters (including several aspects of first-instar chaetotaxy). -

The larvae of the diving beetle genus Laccomimus Toledo & Michat, 2015 (Laccophilinae) are studied for the first time, based on detailed descriptions and illustrations of all instars of L. distinctus Toledo & Michat, 2015, with particular emphasis on mor- phometry and chaetotaxy. The phylogenetic relationships of this genus within the tribe Laccophilini are analyzed cladistically. Lac- comimus is recovered as part of a clade that includes the genera Australphilus Watts, 1978, Neptosternus Sharp, 1882 and Laccophilus Leach, 1815 and is characterized by the presence of natatory setae on the tibia and tarsus, and within this clade it is a sister to the other genera. Third-instar larvae of Laccomimus and Africophilus Guignot, 1948 share the mediodistal insertion of the seta CO7 on the meso- and metacoxa, a short and spine-like seta TI6 on the metatibia, a ventrally sclerotized abdominal segment V and a short urogom- phus. These characters are considered plesiomorphic and indicate a basal position of both genera within the Laccophilini. -

(see page 2) 1 LATISSIMUS 40 October 2017 STRANGE PROTOZOA IN WATER BEETLE HAEMOCOELS Robert Angus (c) (a) (b) (d) (e) Figure Parasites in the haemocoel of Hydrobius rottenbergii Gerhardt One of the stranger findings from my second Chinese trip (see “On and Off the Plateau”, Latissimus 29 23 – 28) was an infestation of small ciliated balls in the haemocoel of a Boreonectes emmerichi Falkenström taken is a somewhat muddy pool near Xinduqao in Sichuan. This pool is shown in Fig 4 on p 25 of Latissimus 29. When I removed the abdomen, in colchicine solution in insect saline (for chromosome preparation) what appeared to a mass of tiny bubbles appeared. My first thought was that I had foolishly opened the beetle in alcoholic fixative, but this was disproved when the “bubbles” began swimming around in a manner characteristic of ciliary locomotion. At the time I was not able to do anything with them, but it was something the like of which I had never seen before. Then, as luck would have it, on Tuesday Max Barclay brought back from the Moscow region of Russia a single living male Hydrobius rottenbergii Gerhardt. This time I injected the beetle with colchicine solution and did not open it up (remove the abdomen) till I had transferred it to ½-isotonic potassium chloride. And at this stage again I was confronted with a mass of the same self-propelled “bubbles”.
