CASTOR, JR, Commissioner RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY 10/20/11 PR#36-11 Handshake Across The River The chief elected officials of Philadelphia, Montgomery County and Lower Merion Township met for a ceremonial “Handshake Across the River” on the Manayunk Bridge Thursday to officially launch a project that will link the communities via a recreational trail across the Schuylkill River. Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter met Montgomery County Commissioners Chairman Jim Matthews and Commissioner Joseph M. Hoeffel and Lower Merion Township Commissioners President Elizabeth S. Rogan midway across the span to make the announcement. “When the Mayor first talked about establishing the Metropolitan Caucus, we were looking for ways to partner with our neighbors and this project was one of the first to come up,” Chairman Matthews said. “I’m thrilled to see it finally get underway. It will be an absolutely gorgeous gateway between our communities.” When finished, a walking and bicycling trail across the iconic Manayunk Bridge will connect Lower Merion Township’s recently completed Cynwyd Heritage Trail with Dupont and High Streets in Manayunk. From there, it’s just a short walk to the shops and restaurants of historic downtown Manayunk. “The Manayunk Bridge serves as a bright example of regional partners and community groups collaborating to achieve something great,” said Mayor Nutter. “I am excited for this project because it strengthens the connection between Philadelphia and Montgomery counties, encourages exercise and recreation, and enables all residents to enjoy the beautiful landscape that we share.” “Today we shake hands in a ceremonial fashion, but it symbolizes how the Township, Montgomery County and the City of Philadelphia have collaborated to fulfill a vision that, as individual entities, we couldn’t have accomplished,” Board President Rogan said. -

They were seeking a home in the New World, Iwhich they had christened “The Welsh Tract.” These “Merioneth Adventurers” from the County of Merionethshire in the North of Wales, were part of William Penn’s vision of the “Holy Experiment” in which the persecuted peoples of the Old World could find refuge in a land of promise and new beginnings. A community-wide task force of representatives from the Township of Lower Merion and the Borough of Narberth have been meeting and planning an anniversary celebration The Harriton Plantation Fair will be held Saturday, Sep- honoring William Penn and the Welsh Quakers who came and tember 29th from 10:00am to 4:00pm, rain or shine. Birch Lieu dit au Guinot, Route de St. Barthélemy 47350 Montignac Toupinerie, France 21st February 2018 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE BOUND VOLUME Although this document is only intended to exist in electronic form, I find it very convenient to have a hard copy to hand. It is easier to refer to a book than wait the five or ten minutes it takes to start up and close down a computer, just to obtain a single reference or check a fact. Books also give you the big picture of the document as a whole rather than the small-screen glimpses we have all got used to. Accordingly, I printed and bound a copy of this document in January 2005, which I have called the First edition, for convenience. Henceforth, I will bind a copy each January, provided the document has increased in size by at least ten percent during the year. At the same time, I will send an update to the web files on www.fipliterature.org, where the electronic version of this document is hosted. Since printing and binding is quite an expensive undertaking, I donated the obsolete volumes to important philatelic libraries round the world. By the middle of 2012, in line with my other documents, I simplified the set-up and turned off the remove widows and orphans feature. This resulted in a reduction in length of 15 pages. Reducing the amount of white space is an ongoing process in an effort to minimise the page count whilst not compromising usability. -

C H A P T E R 3 3 NARBERTH 1980 Area: 0.52 square mile ESTABLISHED: 1895 The Narberth Association in 1891 installed sixty oil lamps on the Narberth Park tract of developer S. Almira Vance at the residents’ expense. It fur nished oil, and a lamplighter earned $7.50 a month. By spring of 1893, the Bala and Merion Electric Com pany had installed electric street lighting on the tract, featuring twenty-four lights of sixteen candlepower Before becoming a borough in 1895, Narberth was each. Narberth Park still had just forty-five houses, not one village but six successive settlements—Indian, and Narberth Avenue was the only macadamized Swedish, Welsh, the hamlet of Libertyville, the street. Pavements were of wood. There were no con nucleus of a “Godey’s L ady’s Book town” called necting drains or sewer system, and no police. Taylor, Director of Parks & Recreation Christopher Leswing, Assistant Director of Building & Planning / Planning SUBJECT: Memorandum of Agreement between the Township and City of Philadelphia for Maintenance of the Manayunk Bridge Trail DATE: March 6, 2013 OVERVIEW The Township of Lower Merion and the City of Philadelphia have negotiated a memorandum of agreement for maintenance of the future Manayunk Bridge Trail. The bridge’s surface, owned by Septa and leased to the Township in 2012, is to be developed as a multi‐use trail that will link the Cynwyd Heritage Trail in Lower Merion with the street network in Manaynk and eventually with the Ivy Ridge Trail in Philadelphia when it is completed. Maintenance of the trail surface of the bridge is to be shared by the two parties. BACKGROUND The Township has been working for several months with the City of Philadelphia, Montgomery County, PennDOT, DVRPC and others to extend the Cynwyd Heritage Trail across the Manayunk Bridge into the City of Philadelphia. The Manayunk Bridge trail extension is viewed by regional funders as necessary to creating a continuous, off‐road paved trail (the Schuylkill River Trail‐ SRT) from Philadelphia to Valley Forge National Park and beyond. The Lower Merion section of the SRT is anticipated to provide a bypass to Main Street Manayunk by utilizing the Pencoyd and Manayunk bridges and the CHT. DVRPC awarded the Township $40,000 in 2012 to explore the feasibility of linking the two bridges and existing/proposed trail sections together through the 9‐acre, steeply sloped parcel donated to the Township by Tom Connelly in 2006.
