Parasitic diseases of the central nervous system are associated with high mortality and morbidity. Many human parasites, such as Toxoplasma gondii , Entamoeba histolytica , Trypanosoma cruzi , Taenia solium , Echinococcus spp., Toxocara canis , T. cati , Angiostrongylus cantonensis , Trichinella spp., during invasion might involve the CNS. Some parasitic infections of the brain are lethal if left untreated (e.g., cerebral malaria – Plasmodium falciparum , primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) – Naegleria fowleri , baylisascariosis – Baylisascaris procyonis , African sleeping sickness – African trypanosomes). These diseases have diverse vectors or intermediate hosts, modes of transmission and endemic regions or geographic distributions. The neurological, cognitive, and mental health problems caused by above parasites are noted mostly in low-income countries; however, sporadic cases also occur in non-endemic areas because of an increase in international travel and immunosuppression caused by therapy or HIV infection. The presence of parasites in the CNS may cause a variety of nerve symptoms, depending on the location and extent of the injury; the most common subjective symptoms include headache, dizziness, and root pain while objective symptoms are epileptic seizures, increased intracranial pressure, sensory disturbances, meningeal syndrome, cerebellar ataxia, and core syndromes. -

Government Printing Office Washington : 1970 The protozoan, helminth, and arthropod parasites of deer, Odocoileus hemionus and O. virginianus, of the continental United States and Canada are named in a checklist with information categorized by scientific name, deer host, geographic distribution by State or Province, and authority for each record. Sources of information are the files of the Index-Catalogue of Medical and Veterinary Zoology, the National Parasite Collection, and pub- lished papers. Three hundred and fifty-two references are cited. Seventy- nine genera of parasites have been reported from North American deer, of which 73 have been assigned one or more specific names representing 137 species (10 protozoans, 6 trematodes, 11 cestodes, 51 nematodes, and 59 arthropods). Sixty-one of these species are also known to occur as parasites of domestic sheep and 54 as parasites of cattle. The 71 parasites that the authors have examined from deer are marked with an asterisk. This paper is designed as a working tool for wildlife and animal disease workers to quickly find references pertinent to a particular parasite species, its deer hosts, and its geographic distribution. -

Se discuten los aspectos histórico-taxonómico de cada especie, desde las Crónicas de Indias, los primeros naturalistas, hasta las contribuciones científicas más recientes. Se discute la validez de los nombres utilizados tradicionalmente y sus sinonimias. Se sugieren aspectos evolutivos y de relaciones filogenéticas intra y entre los diferentes géneros. Se ilustra cada especie con dibujos y fotografías y se incorporan claves para la identificación de los géneros y las especies. This paper present a detailed sinopsis of the piranha sixteen species of Venezuela, included in the genera: Pygopristis (1 species), Pristobrycon (4 species), Pygocentrus (1 species) y Serrasalmus (10 species). Discussions on historical-taxonomic aspects of each species are included from the Indian Crónicas de Indias, the first naturalists, to recent scientific contributions. Names traditionally used and sinonomies of each species are discussed. Suggestions on hypothesis of relationships and evolution inside groups and among genera are given. Each species is illustrated with drawings and photographs. Keys for the identification of species are included. The entomological monitoring of filarial nematode infections in mosquitoes by molecular xenomonitoring might serve as the measure of the rate at which humans and animals expose mosquitoes to microfilariae and the rate at which animals and humans are exposed to the bites of the infected mosquitoes. We hypothesized that combining the data obtained from molecular xenomonitoring and phenological studies of mosquitoes in the urban environment would provide insights into the transmission risk of filarial diseases. In our search for Dirofilaria spp.-infected mosquitoes, we have found Setaria tundra-infected ones instead, as in many other European studies. We have observed that cross-reactivity in PCR assays for Dirofilaria repens, Dirofilaria immitis,andS. tundra COI gene detection was the rule rather than the exception. S. tundra infections were mainly found in Aedes mosquitoes. The differences in the diurnal rhythm of Aedes and Culex mosquitoes did not seem a likely explanation for the lack of S. tundra infections in Culex mosquitoes. The similarity of S. tundra COI gene sequences found in Aedes vexans and Aedes caspius mosquitoes and in roe deer in many European studies, supported by data on Ae. -

The sectioned larva had 1 nucleus in each intestinal cell and was identified as G. hispidum. The patient recalled having eaten freshwater fish when he lived in China. Surveys were conducted in Idaho, USA during the 2000-2006 cropping seasons to study the occurrence, population density, host association and distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes associated with major crops, grasses and weeds. Eighty-four species and 43 genera of plant-parasitic nematodes were recorded in soil samples from 29 crops in 20 counties in Idaho. Among them, 36 species are new records in this region. The highest number of species belonged to the genus Pratylenchus; P. neglectus was the predominant species among all species of the identified genera. Among the endoparasitic nematodes, the highest percentage of occurrence was Pratylenchus (29.7) followed by Meloidogyne (4.4) and Heterodera (3.4). Among the ectoparasitic nematodes, Helicotylenchus was predominant (8.3) followed by Mesocriconema (5.0) and Tylenchorhynchus (4.8). Keywords. First Report of Setaria Tundra in Roe Deer

Soriguer1 and Patrocinio Morrondo5 Abstract Background: Filarioid nematode parasites are major health hazards with important medical, veterinary and economic implications. Recently, they have been considered as indicators of climate change. Findings: In this paper, we report the first record of Setaria tundra in roe deer from the Iberian Peninsula. Adult S. tundra were collected from the peritoneal cavity during the post-mortem examination of a 2 year-old male roe deer, which belonged to a private fenced estate in La Alcarria (Guadalajara, Spain). Since 2012, the area has suffered a high roe deer decline rate (75 %), for unknown reasons. Aiming to support the morphological identification and to determine the phylogenetic position of S. tundra recovered from the roe deer, a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene from the two morphologically identified parasites was amplified, sequenced and compared with corresponding sequences of other filarioid nematode species. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the isolate of S. tundra recovered was basal to all other formely reported Setaria tundra sequences. The presence of all other haplotypes in Northern Europe may be indicative of a South to North outbreak in Europe. Conclusions: This is the first report of S. tundra in roe deer from the Iberian Peninsula, with interesting phylogenetic results, which may have further implications in the epidemiological and genetic studies of these filarioid parasites. -
