Frances Mayes, MCC Holy Union Abstract Metropolitan Community Churches have performed Holy Union commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples since 1969. An ongoing internal dialogue concerns whether to expand the definition to include families with more than two adult partners. This paper summarizes historical definitions of marriage and family, development of sexual theology, and current descriptions of contemporary families of varying compositions. Fourteen interviews were conducted to elicit the stories of non- monogamous MCC families. Portions of the interviews are presented as input into the discussion. iii Rev. Mediated Intimacies: Legal, Literary, and Journalistic Textualities of Gender Violence in Post-War Nicaragua DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Alicia Zoe Miklos, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Ileana Rodríguez, Advisor Ignacio Corona Laura Podalsky Copyright by Alicia Zoe Miklos 2015 Abstract My dissertation examines representations of femicide as gender violence in legal, journalistic, literary, and online cultural production in contemporary post-war Nicaragua. I begin with the passing of Law 779, the Integral Law Against Violence Towards Women, approved by the Nicaraguan National Assembly in February 2012. The law fills a legal vacuum in the country by codifying femicide, as well as sexual, psychological, patrimonial, and labor abuse into Nicaraguan law as gender specific crimes. Prohibiting the long-standing practice of police and judicial mediation between accusers and aggressors, Law 779 set out to endow women with judicial agency in what had been largely hostile and re-victimizing institutional spaces. The focus of the project is cultural, examining representations of gender violence as part of a social dialogue about Law 779, covering a variety of textual realms. The goal of the project is to explain how different mediums and social actors explain gender violence by studying discourse and narrative modes. The debate centered on Law 779’s re-balancing of power relations and its controversy stemmed from its challenge to existing family structures, which disguise masculine authority and impunity. The inertia of the status quo proved strong, with Law 779 being reformed and regulated between 2012 and 2014, reverting its original radical spirit.

  • Detecting Japanese Vernacular Modernism: Shinseinen Magazine and the Development of the Tantei Shôsetsu Genre, 1920-1931
DETECTING JAPANESE VERNACULAR MODERNISM: SHINSEINEN MAGAZINE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TANTEI SHÔSETSU GENRE, 1920-1931 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kyoko Omori * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Professor William J. Tyler, Adviser Approved by Professor Richard Torrance Professor Mark Bender Adviser Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT The post-war discourse on modern Japanese literature has presented the binary opposition between “pure” versus “popular” literature as a historical fact, configuring popular literature as the disposable “other” of “pure” literature. Consequently, Japanese literary studies have paid relatively little attention to popular forms such as mystery fiction, samurai “period” fiction, the romance novel, and “nansensu” humor. This dissertation examines the discursive formation of the Japanese modernist popular genre known as “tantei shôsetsu” or “detective fiction.” Focusing on the popular monthly magazine Shinseinen and several of its writers, it discusses the theoretical and practical dimensions of “tantei shôsetsu” as a vernacular form of modernist literary production. In doing so, it situates the genre within contemporaneous debates about the meaning of both modernity and literature in Japan during the 1920s. Chapter One establishes the theoretical terms for “vernacular modernism” by illuminating the ways in which popular literary production engaged with the forces of commercialism and Westernization that also shaped the development of canonical Japanese literature during the early twentieth century. Chapter Two surveys established critical views of Modernism in Japan and shows that they fail to account for the significance of vernacular expression.

(De)humanizing Narratives of Terrorism in Spain and Peru Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Melissa Doran, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Ulises Juan Zevallos-Aguilar, Advisor Ignacio Corona Aurélie Vialette Copyright by Melissa Doran 2014 2 Abstract Both Spain and Peru experienced protracted violent conflicts between insurgent groups and State forces during the second half of the twentieth century. In Spain, this involved Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA), a radical Basque nationalist organization which sought Basque autonomy via armed struggle in a conflict which lasted from 1959 until 2011. In Peru, the insurgent threat was represented by Sendero Luminoso, a Maoist guerrilla insurgency based in the Peruvian highlands that sought drastic sociopolitical change within Peru. Sendero Luminoso launched what they deemed a people’s war in 1980, and the bloody conflict that ensued continued until 1992. The damage caused by each of these conflicts was monumental, both in terms of the loss of human life and damage to infrastructure in both countries. In this dissertation I examine the depiction of these conflicts in a selection of Peruvian and Spanish novels and films. I argue that each work promotes a certain version of the conflict it describes, and that this can be revealed through an analysis of the humanizing and dehumanizing discourses at play in the representation of the actors in both of these conflicts. From Peru, I will examine Santiago Roncagliolo’s novel Abril rojo (2006) and Fabrizio Aguilar’s film Paloma de papel (2003).

  • Archival/Anarchival Performativity Of
MAPPING THE SISYPHEAN ARCHIVES: ARCHIVAL/ANARCHIVAL PERFORMATIVITY OF REPETITION AND FAILURE IN CONTEMPORARY ARCHIVAL ART Gaeun Ji Department of Visual Cultures Goldsmiths College, University of London For the Degree of Ph.D. DECLARATION I declare that all work presented in this thesis is my own. January 2017 2 ABSTRACT Exploring a distinctive archival turn in art, this study investigates where the archival impulse comes from and why and how artists, as performative researchers, are obsessed with issues relating to the archive. In order to answer for these questions, this thesis displays a dynamic geography of archival/anarchival performativity in contemporary archival art since, primarily, the 1960s. The artist as Sisyphus detects the aporia of the archival impulse being simultaneously archival and anarchival and activates a Sisyphean loop of repetition and failure in their own artistic archives. Inspired by the myth of Sisyphus, this project is therefore given the title “mapping the Sisyphean archives”. Using a methodology of mapping, diverse case studies of archival art are interwoven to unveil the reconfiguration of the physical and conceptual conditions of the archive. The meaning of mapping here is varied – doing, undoing, performing, failing, and queering, polymorphously facilitated by two key wheels of Sisyphean performativity. A critical capacity of repetition and failure is thus crucially credited as it brings resistant and alternative modes of being, thinking, and knowing to undermine any idealisation and totalitarianism embedded in normative archives. Referring to Jacques Derrida’s deconstructive reading of the archive and Gilles Deleuze’s thoughts on rhizomatic creativity, the first half of the thesis examines multifaceted aspects of repetition as being pathological, self-evolving, creative, and differentiated each time.

Letras Hispanas Volume 17 TITLE: Family Ties and Affective Landscapes in 21st Century Argentinean and Mexican Cinema: El premio (2012) and Mai morire (2013) AUTHOR: María Soledad Paz-Mackay and Argelia González Hurtado EMAIL: [email protected]; [email protected] AFFILIATION: St. Francis Xavier University; Department of Modern Languages, Argentine Literature and Cinema, Southern Cone Art and Human Rights; 2360 Notre Dame Avenue; Antigonish, Nova Scotia B2G 2W5 St. Mary’s College of Maryland; Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies; 47645 College Drive, St. Mary’s City, MD, 200686-3001 ABSTRACT: This article considers the intersection of cinematic work and landscape by analysing the gazes and discourses that affectively frame the rural landscape of Argentina and Mexico as portrayed in the films El premio (2012) and Mai Morire (2013). Landscape evokes emotion and affect, and by focus- ing on the resignification of iconic rural landscapes in the films, we question alternative meanings of rural landscape as portrayed in these two regions. We argue that the films articulate a moment of rupture in the lives of the protagonists by using the landscape to depict the importance of change in their individual lives. Both films imbue the landscape with meanings that represent intensities to pro- voke a more nuanced understanding of the political or social context of the protagonists’ problematic situations. We focus on the formal and the aesthetic devices used to trigger an affective response and reshape the cinematic meaning of Patagonia and Xochimilco. KEYWORDS: Film, Aesthetics, Rural Landscape, Argentina, Mexico, Affect, Emotion. RESUMEN: Este artículo considera el cruce entre el trabajo cinematográfico y el paisaje analizando las mira- das y discursos que encuadran afectivamente el paisaje rural de Argentina y México representado en las películas El premio (2012) y Mai Morire (2013).

Research shows that you can dramatically decrease your child’s summer slide, or academic regression that takes place each summer, by ensuring that your child reads for at least 20 minutes every day. Reading is defined as you reading to your child, your child reading to you or when ready, your child reading independently. BANNED FILMS, C/OVERT OPPRESSION: PRACTICES OF FILM CENSORSHIP FROM CONTEMPORARY TURKEY A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Sonay Ban December 2020 Examining Committee Members: Damien Stankiewicz, Advisory Chair, Anthropology Heather Levi, Anthropology Wazhmah Osman, Media Studies and Production Bilge Yeşil, External Member, College of Staten Island, CUNY ABSTRACT This project explores how film censorship shapes film production and circulation at film festivals, public screenings, and theatrical releases since the early 2000s in Turkey. It argues that, over time, mechanisms of censorship under Erdoğan’s authoritarian regime became less centralized; practices of censorship became more dispersed and less and less “official;” and the various imposing actors and agencies have differed from those in previous decades. Though still consistent with longstanding state ideologies, reasons for censorship practices, now more than ever, must be complexly navigated and negotiated by producers and distributors of film, including festival organizers, art institutions, and filmmakers themselves, through self-censorship. Drawing on a number of in-depth case studies of films banned after 2000, this project analyzes these works within the political and social contexts surrounding their releases, as well as ethnographic data based on dozens of extensive semi-structured interviews with cultural producers over five years of fieldwork.
