In essence, Tenebrae is the prescribed and chanted in morning prayer of the Church during the Triduum: a mournful tone. This Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. In early lamentation on the centuries, true to its character of being a morning destruction of the ancient office, Tenebrae was celebrated after the midnight Jerusalem by the prayer. After 1955, Tenebrae is moved back to civilization is wounded the early hours of the morning. Regardless of the time again and again by the of the day when Tenebrae was chanted, the most reality of sin. It is precisely striking visual feature of Tenebrae is that after each the sinfulness of humanity psalm and canticle, candles mounted on a hearse (a through the ages, that large candelabra with a triangular frame), placed cause the all-merciful and all-loving savior of mankind conspicuously in front of the altar, are snuffed to be killed. In some places, extra elements are successively. As this happens, the church becomes incorporated at the end of Tenebrae to make the increasingly darkened. Movie Review: Risen If you were to witness the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, how do you envision this experience would impact you?

I suppose this is a question that is impossible to answer with certainty, since none of us will ever get the chance of experiencing them. All we have are some writings from the Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, and books by non-Christian historians such as Josephus. The dearth of information, however, never stopped the imagination of filmmakers of the recently released film Risen in theaters now. I am not giving the movie away by telling you that the premise of the film is about a Roman officer, Clavius, who is charged by Pontius Pilate to investigate the whereabouts of Jesus’ body after his burial and the “alleged” resurrection. This is to prevent the Jewish people from using Jesus as an excuse to rebel against their Roman overlords. Pilate, as a ruthless governor of Judea, is ready to quash any possibility of a Jewish insurrection. Clavius is portrayed as a strong and astute officer who seeks to advance his military career, so that one day he may retire peacefully with his family. Like other Romans, he does not have any affinity to the monotheistic religion of the Jews. As a soldier, his allegiance lies with the war god, Mars. However, witnessing the death of Jesus on the cross makes a deep impression on him. Moreover, the order from Pontius Pilate forces him to learn more about Jesus and the band of disciples. Initially, he just wants to get his job done, but the pressure from Pilate compels him into a quest. As can be expected, the plot line of the movie goes beyond the Biblical accounts of Jesus’ passion and resurrection.

Interestingly, Risen reminds me a lot of Ben Hur, the 1959 Academy Awards Best Picture starring Charlton Heston. Both films feature a manly, powerful figure who is a non-believer trying to climb up the social ladder in the Roman society. The main character’s presence at Jesus’ crucifixion brings about a profound transformation in them. There is also a miraculous healing of leprosy in both movies as a sub plot.

Overall, I found Risen highly thought-provoking. The sets are quite beautiful, and the scenes of desert and wilderness quite stunning. There are also several clever conversations and imageries that I appreciate. However, some scenes could be somewhat violent and gory. This being said, if you enjoy pondering the impact of the “resurrection event” on humanity, this film is for you.

As I mentioned above, none of us reading this review have and can witness the death and resurrection of Christ. However, as Jesus told Thomas the Apostle, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (Jn 20:29), which applies to countless Christians in the following centuries. Having Seen this movie, I cannot help but wonder: as a cradle Catholic, what is it that made me believe in Jesus? In other words, what made me take ownership of my faith? Furthermore, I wonder: for converts to the faith, what does it take to convince somebody the truth of Christianity? Is it an encounter, a word, a book, or a person? If you are a convert, perhaps you could ponder about this as well.

That’s my take on Risen,

Br. Gregory
