With the Discovery of a New Species of Oedipina from the Foothills Along
With the discovery of a new species of Oedipina from the foothills along the Caribbean versant of Costa Rica (see the following article), the number of species of salamanders in the country has risen to 51. When compared to other countries, this diversity of salamanders places Costa Rica 5th among all countries on the planet, behind the United States (1st), Mexico (2nd), China (3rd), and Guatemala (4th). When considering countries with an area greater than 5,000 km2, the highest diversity density of salamanders is found in the small country of Costa Rica, with one species/1,000 km2. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: I describe a new salamander of the genus Oedipina, subgenus Oedopinola, from two sites in Premontane Rainforest along the foothills of the central Caribbean region of Costa Rica, at elevations from 540 to 850 m. The type locality lies within the Guayacán Rainforest Reserve, a private reserve owned and operated by the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center, located approximately 2 km north of Guayacán de Siquirres, in the province of Limón. The new taxon is distinguished from its congeners based on phenotypic and molecular (16S and cyt b) characteristics. -

Costa Rica to Establish Straight Baselines from Which to Measure Its Territorial Sea
2 INTRODUCTION This study analyzes the claim made by Costa Rica to establish straight baselines from which to measure its territorial sea. The basis for the analysis of this claim is Article 7 of the United Nations Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention which is reproduced at Annex 1. Paragraph 1 of this Article is the paramount paragraph that establishes the geographical conditions under which States may claim straight baselines: "1. In localities where the coastline is deeply indented and cut into, or if there is a fringe of islands along the coast in its immediate vicinity, the method of straight baselines joining appropriate points may be employed in drawing the baseline from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured." Included in this study is a page-size map illustrating the straight baseline system. Larger scale maps and charts, however, were used for the analysis. The Claim: On October 14, 1988, Costa Rica issued Decree No. 18581-RE creating straight baselines along its Pacific Ocean coastline. A translation of Article 1 of this Decree, which cites the particular basepoints follows (the entire Decree is found at Annex 2): Article 1 - The breadth of the territorial sea of Costa Rica shall be measured, in the Pacific Ocean, from the following baselines: A. The normal baseline method: From Punta San Francisco, also known as Madero (10° 17' 36" N., 85° 51' 19"W), to Punta Guiones (9° 54' 18" N., 85° 40' 15" W), and from Punta Llorona (8° 35' 03" N, 83° 43' 25" W.) to Punta Salsipuedes (8° 26' 32" N., 83° 34' 13" W.). -

PREÁMBULO Quiero manifestar con todo respeto que, “EL FACTOR DE ORDEN, NO ALTERA EL PRODUCTO”… En todo momento, mi pasión por Quepos es... un sentimiento, nacer en Quepos, no solo es un orgullo, es un honor… ser un capullo, de una tierra bendita de Dios, por algo en específico, la bautizaron como... EL PORTAL DEL PACIFICO. Nací en los años 50, en el centro de Quepos, y viví en una casa de pared por medio del cine San Jorge, frente al parque, donde imponente estaba la Iglesia Católica, luego trasladada a Rancho Grande, vecinos y en privilegio del gran salón Miramar, la barbería de Juancito Zeledón el barbero, y el kiosko de los ricos batidos y las deliciosas tostadas. Los que nacimos en esa época y en casas atendidos por parteras, tuvimos la bendición del Señor, ser sacados al mundo de las manos de la mejor, una obstetra divina, sencilla, humilde, de nobles sentimientos, con una carisma único, la que Dios talló como una perla preciosa, bella por fuera y bella por dentro, Doña Margarita Black Shedden, la esposa de don Víctor Mora, todos nacidos con amor y sin demora. Quepos... territorio del Cacique Quepo, asentado sobre un viviente manglar, rodeado de un inmenso mar, protegido por un otero, que rompe el viento como gran velero, desde su monte impone su mirada sobre el horizonte tornasol, donde se peina la luna y se lava la cara el sol. Para los que vivimos esa época de plata, cada amanecer y cada atardecer, vimos al tren correr, su galopante paso sobre la línea férrea su guía, era pan nuestro de cada día, anunciaba con su partida y su llegada, el progreso de la vida. -
Gobierno Anuncia Cambio De Alertas Y Fortalecimiento De Trabajo Con Comunidades
4 de agosto 2020 GOBIERNO ANUNCIA CAMBIO DE ALERTAS Y FORTALECIMIENTO DE TRABAJO CON COMUNIDADES • 3 cantones bajaron de alerta naranja amarilla, así como dos distritos de Desamparados y uno de Alajuela. • 39 distritos nuevos se suman a la lista de lugares con alerta temprana por virus respiratorios. • Gobierno intensifica estrategia con comunidades en mayor riesgo Tras una valoración epidemiológica por parte del Ministerio de Salud, realizadas en las semanas 30 y 31, la Comisión Nacional de Prevención de Riesgos y Atención de Emergencias (CNE), hace un reajuste en la condición de alerta Naranja a Alerta Amarilla para el cantón de Mora y los distritos de San Cristóbal y Frailes de Desamparados en la provincia de San José. Asimismo, baja a alerta amarilla el distrito de Sarapiquí y el cantón de Poás en Alajuela, así como el cantón de San Rafael de Heredia. La información fue dada a conocer en conferencia de prensa por el jefe de operaciones de la CNE, Sigifredo Pérez Fernández, quien manifestó que “las modificaciones evidencian el acatamiento y la responsabilidad individual que hemos tenido como sociedad para disminuir la curva de contagio en las comunidades”. Por una actualización en las alertas sindrómicas, 39 distritos nuevos se suman a la lista de lugares con alerta temprana por virus respiratorios anunciada el pasado 30 de julio. Actualmente, son 71 distritos que se encuentran en alerta amarilla pero mantienen el riesgo debido a un incremento en las consultas por tos y fiebre, lo cual aumenta el riesgo de enfrentar una alerta naranja próximamente, dado que son síntomas asociados al COVID-19.
