HOERLE-GUGGENHEIM GALLERY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hoerle-Guggenheim Gallery 527 West 23rd Street New York, NY 10011 www.hoerle-guggenheim.com www.welkershow.com Tuesday-Saturday: 11AM-6PM T. 212 366 4490 David Welker, RIFT, 1993 Oil on Canvas 20 x 35 inches DAVID WELKER | SUBCONSCIOUS NARRATIVES November 19 - January 7, 2016 Opening Reception: Thursday, November 19, 6-9PM HOERLE-GUGGENHEIM GALLERY presents David Welker: Subconscious Narratives, the artist’s first solo show in New York City. Welker has followed a path of experimentation and genre jumping taking him from the top of the landscape mural scene to the top of the concert poster scene in just a few years. Welker is now setting his sights on the gallery world as he continues to express all of his varied influences in a unified visual aesthetic which combines his deep appreciation of early 20th century Surrealism with his love of pervasive pop culture. With Subconscious Narratives Welker depicts a thought before it becomes a word, concept, story or tangible form. These studies are not isolated to one brief instant but instead capture the turmoil of forms transitioning in the mind from moment to moment. By getting in tune with his minds eye Welker has noticed that the periphery of each thought has edges fading into others. His imagination hovers in a space devoid of temporal constraints or physical permanence. This is the conceptual DNA of Subconscious Narratives - an exploration of the cloudy impressions leading up to and receding from a fabricated instance. While the center of the pieces may be a conceptual focus, the edges form building blocks for dreams not yet depicted.

Abstract: Butlers of the Mohawk Valley: Family Traditions and the Establishment of British Empire in Colonial New York Historians follow those tributaries of early American history and trace their converging currents as best they may in an immeasurable river of human experience. The Butlers were part of those British imperial currents that washed over mid Atlantic America for the better part of the eighteenth century. In particular their experience reinforces those studies that recognize the impact that the Anglo-Irish experience had on the British Imperial ethos in America. Understanding this ethos is as crucial to understanding early America as is the Calvinist ethos of the Massachusetts Puritan or the Republican ethos of English Wiggery. We don't merely suppose the Butlers are part of this tradition because their story begins with Walter Butler, a British soldier of the Imperial Wars in America.

  • Many Years Ago Al Jaffee Came in with a Piece That Used
I Ma ha! wa anI thE SUI thl ilf "Many years ago Al Jaffee n C came in with a piece that h' used the word 'schmuck: and there was a big debate about whether the magazine should include that word. Today it would be nothing. rr 072 Desmond Devlin, who has contributed to Mad since 1984, agrees. "Culturally, Mad's impact has been immense, especially back when it was the foremost one-stop source of mockery and criticism;' he says."Mad synthesized the nagging doubts that millions of Americans had about their society, and it demonstrated that iconoclasm would sell to a mass audience. Readers had their suspicions confirmed, and were introduced to new suspicions. "It isn't as if presidents had never betrayed their oaths before, and it isn't as if advertising suddenly got amoral in 1955;' Devlin adds. "But the package Mad has put out, and the attitude it promoted, has long since become a norm:' Mad entered this world in 1952 as a comic book. conceived, written and edited by Harvey Kurtzman and published by ECComics. The first few issues of Mad satirized the era's most popular comic books and comic strips, then Kurtzman started expanding his focus to include other aspects of popular culture, such as supermarkets, restaurant dining, motion pictures and television. Kurtzman delighted in experimenting with style and design, especially on Mad's covers. The cover for issue 19, for example, looks just like a horse-racing form, while the cover of issue 20 is an exact replica of a black composition notebook.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives
NOVELS Baillie, Allan The First Voyage F BAI:A An adventure story set in our very distant past, 30,000 years ago, when the first tribes from Timor braved the ocean on primitive rafts to travel into the unknown, and reached the land mass of what is now Australia. Baillie, Allan Songman F BAI:A This story is set in northern Australia in 1720, before the time of Captain Cook. Yukuwa sets out across the sea to the islands of Indonesia. It is an adventure contrasting lifestyles and cultures, based on an episode of our history rarely explored in fiction. Birch, Tony, The White Girl F BIR:T Odette Brown has lived her whole life on the fringes of a small country town. After her daughter disappeared and left her with her granddaughter Sissy to raise on her own, Odette has managed to stay under the radar of the welfare authorities who are removing fair-skinned Aboriginal children from their families. When a new policeman arrives in town, determined to enforce the law, Odette must risk everything to save Sissy and protect everything she loves. Boyd, Jillian Bakir and Bi F BOY:J Bakir and Bi is based on a Torres Strait Islander creation story with illustrations by 18-year-old Tori-Jay Mordey. Bakir and Mar live on a remote island called Egur with their two young children. While fishing on the beach Bakir comes across a very special pelican named Bi. A famine occurs, and life on the island is no longer harmonious. • Commencement Committees
Commencement MAY 2021 WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: It is with a mixture of happiness, pride, and confidence that I write to you on this occasion of the culmination of your years of effort and achievement at the University of Connecticut. Many times in the past 12 months I have had reason to recall the observation of the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus: “Happiness and freedom begin with one principle: some things are within your control, and some are not.” This is a principle we can truly say has been affirmed for everyone in the world since the spring of 2020. Certainly, it is a principle that was not lost on you, as you responded to events outside your control with the creativity, determination, and perseverance that came to characterize UConn during this time. Great challenges beget great achievements, and your achievement as students here shine as brightly as any in the 140- year history of our University. You now continue your journey in the world not just prepared, but empowered: empowered by the knowledge that you have it within yourself to face any obstacle, and overcome it. This is a special class, its ranks filled with scholars of all disciplines and leaders on issues from climate action to racial justice. One of the pleasures I look forward to in the coming years is learning of how you will apply your UConn experience to transforming our world – hopefully, learning about it from you in person, on visits back to your alma mater. As we move closer toward a return to a semblance of life as we knew it before the pandemic, I know it will become easier to put the last year into the context of your entire time at UConn.
