He had been writing purely for his own amusement for several years, but always harboured a dream of trading in his film career to become a full time writer. After receiving 76 rejection letters from publishers, Jasper’s first novel THE EYRE AFFAIR was taken on by Hodder & Stoughton and published in July 2001. Set in 1985 in a world that is similar to our own, but with a few crucial - and bizarre - differences (Wales is a socialist republic, the Crimean War is still ongoing and the most popular pets are home-cloned dodos), THE EYRE AFFAIR introduces a remarkable heroine, a literary detective named Thursday Next'. Thursday’s job includes spotting forgeries of Shakespeare’s lost plays, mending holes in narrative plotlines, and rescuing characters who have been kidnapped from literary masterpieces. • Jasper Fforde's the Eyre Affair
Article Info/Makale Bilgisi Received/Geliş: 30.12.2016 Accepted/Kabul: 28.03.2017 DOİ: 10.5505/pausbed.2017.83798 MATERIALIZING THE READING PROCESS: JASPER FFORDE’S THE EYRE AFFAIR∗ F. ZEYNEP BİLGE∗∗ Abstract This study suggests that Jasper Fforde’s novel The Eyre Affair (2001) is a fictional representation of the reader response theory. Being the first novel of the Thursday Next series, the novel introduces the reader an alternate universe in which there are no boundaries between the real and the fictitious worlds. Allowing the reader enter Jane Eyre’s story both on a mental and physical level, Fforde’s rewriting fills in the gaps within the source text with alternative incidents. Basing its argument on Louise M. Rosenblatt’s theory concerning the transactional reader response theory, this study displays the reader’s dynamic role during the reading process by emphasizing the intertextual relationship between Jane Eyre and The Eyre Affair. Keywords: The Eyre Affair, Jane Eyre, Jasper Fforde, Reader Response Theory, Rewriting, Intertextuality, Parody OKUMA SÜRECİNİ CİSİMLEŞTİRMEK: JASPER FFORDE'NİN THE EYRE AFFAİR ROMANI Özet Bu çalışma Jasper Fforde’nin The Eyre Affair (2001) adlı romanının okur tepkisi odaklı eleştiri kuramının kurmaca bir temsili olduğu iddiasını ortaya atmaktadır.

  • Wishing to Be Fictional
Wishing to Be Fictional Laura Green Northeastern University n Jasper Fforde’s crime-novel parody The Fourth Bear: A Nursery In- vestigation (2006), a detective named Jack Spratt investigates crimes Iinvolving characters from nursery rhymes, such as the Gingerbread Man. The novel’s parallel universe of Reading, England, features two kinds of characters. Some characters are, for the novel’s purposes, “real people,” who have the same beliefs about their ontological status as the novel’s readers do about theirs and are fictional only from the reader’s extradiegetical perspective. These characters live side-by-side with “Per- sons of Dubious Reality” (PDRs), whose existence derives from other texts and who know that they are intradiegetically, as well as extradi- egetically, fictional. As it turns out, Spratt himself is a PDR—Jack Sprat of the nursery rhyme, who, having added an extra “T” to his name, is passing as real. A crisis occurs when he must confess his status to his wife, Madeleine, who is, apparently, real. Her anger at his deception is compounded by the fear that if someone as apparently ordinary (by local standards) as Jack is a PDR, she might be one also. Spratt’s attempt to dispel this fear is not, as the reader recognizes, entirely persuasive: “In the nursery world, surnames always make good rhymes. Horner/corner, Spratt/fat, Hubbard/cupboard. Your maiden name of ‘Usher’ doesn’t rhyme with much except ‘gusher’ and . ‘flusher’” (185). Spratt seems to overlook his own knowledge that PDRs don’t come exclusively from nursery lore (his own close PDR acquaintance includes his daughter’s fiancé, Prometheus, and his son’s pet, Caliban), and his reading appar- ently has not extended to the stories of Poe, in whose “Fall of the House of Usher” Madeleine is to be found.1 With its crossing and re-crossing of conventional boundaries be- tween the representationally real and the representationally fictional, Fforde’s postmodern romp mocks readers’ attachment to these distinc- tions and our conviction that we (unlike Madeleine) can be certain which side we are on.

  • The Language of Metatextual Fiction. the Narrative Discourse of Jasper Fforde
THE LANGUAGE OF METATEXTUAL FICTION. THE NARRATIVE DISCOURSE OF JASPER FFORDE JOSÉ LUIS MARTÍNEZ-DUEÑAS ESPEJO Universidad de Granada This paper deals with issues related to the consideration of the language of fiction and the employment of meta-narrative patterns. By addressing the novels of Jasper Fforde, I mean to expound the complexity of devices used in order to recreate an atmosphere of fiction and a linguistic use of eccentric metaliterary references and intertextuality. The representation of a text-world is a most conspicuous act of literary innuendo, and this is a salient feature on the novels used as samples. The presence of complex rhetorical and stylistic devices makes these novels a unique example for the study of the linguistics of fiction in contemporary English. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single character in possession of a good fiction must be in want of a good text. And, if the text goes beyond itself, much the better: “the more metafiction, the more metatextual, the better”. A text travels in the discourse of time and the discourse of place, in history and geography. The text haunts the minds of readers, extricates the hearts of scholars and creates a universe of discourse of deep semantic impact. This is specially the case of fiction, which is that alternative view of reality carried out by means of a particular use of language. Fiction is not an attempt to foil truth or gainsay reality but a projection of a universe of discourse mounted on an imaginative display.
