BOAT CREW HANDBOOK – Boat Operations Sumner I. Kimball, USLSS BCH16114.1 December 2017 Sumner Increase Kimball, USLSS A young lawyer from Maine, Sumner I. Kimball was appointed as the chief of the Treasury Department's Revenue Marine Division in 1871. He had joined the Treasury Department as a clerk 10 years earlier and had proven his abilities as a manager. Using his hard-earned political know-how, and a good dose of Yankee common sense, Kimball proceeded to completely overhaul the Revenue Marine and the hodge-podge system of lifesaving stations along the nation's coast that were also under the control of the Revenue Marine Division. His impact on both organizations would prove to be immeasurable. After the Civil War, the Revenue Marine, and the executive branch agencies generally, came under intense Congressional scrutiny. Economy was the name of the game during this time and expenditures were scrutinized across the board. Hence, Kimball decided to order the construction of new cutters not with iron hulls, which entailed considerable expense, but with proven wood hulls. The total number of petty officers and enlisted men was substantially cut and their pay reduced. Kimball also carried out a vigorous "housecleaning" of incompetent Revenue Marine officers and saw to it that discipline was tightened. A special object of his censure was the use of cutters as personal yachts by local Custom officials, a wide-spread abuse during that time. Kimball also put into effect a merit system to determine promotions. He also made one other great contribution to the quality of the Revenue Marine by establishing, in 1877, a School of Instruction, to train young officers. -

NORTH SAILS MAST FURLING INSTALLATION GUIDE Congratulations on purchasing your new North Mast Furling Mainsail. This guide is intended to help better understand the key construction elements, usage and installation of your sail. If you have any questions after reading this document and before installing your sail, please contact your North Sails representative. It is best to have two people installing the sail which can be accomplished in less than one hour. Your boat needs facing directly into the wind and ideally the wind speed should be less than 8 knots. Step 1 Unpack your Sail Begin by removing your North Sails Purchasers Pack including your Quality Control and Warranty information. Reserve for future reference. Locate and identify the battens (if any) and reserve for installation later. Step 2 Attach the Mainsail Tack Begin by unrolling your mainsail on the side deck from luff to leech. Lift the mainsail tack area and attach to your tack fitting. Your new Mast Furling mainsail incorporates a North Sails exclusive Rope Tack. This feature is designed to provide a soft and easily furled corner attachment. The sail has less patching the normal corner, but has the Spectra/Dyneema rope splayed and sewn into the sail to proved strength. Please ensure the tack rope is connected to a smooth hook or shackle to ensure durability and that no chafing occurs. NOTE: If your mainsail has a Crab Claw Cutaway and two webbing attachment points – Please read the Stowaway Mast Furling Mainsail installation guide. Step 2 www.northsails.com Step 3 Attach the Mainsail Clew Lift the mainsail clew to the end of the boom and run the outhaul line through the clew block. -

SALVADOR-BAHIA Maria Herminia Olivera Hernández - UFBA* RESUMO: O Fortim Santa Maria da Barra, fortaleza construída no século XVII, constitui um dos monumentos tombados de caráter militar representativos do período colonial. O mesmo passou por modificações em sua estrutura e imagem visual quando lhe foram incorporados elementos, sobretudo na sua composição como conjunto arquitetônico construído. Através do presente artigo pretendemos aqui apontar os procedimentos metodológicos adotados para a realização do projeto que propõe junto à restauração do conjunto a inserção de novo uso: os escritórios da Fundação AVINA Brasil – Recursos Marinho, Costeiro e Hídricos. A dita instituição propõe promover ações de cunho social, ambiental e cultural, buscando transformar o Forte em um importante espaço educacional no país e no continente, principalmente em relação aos temas marinho-costeiros com os quais a história do Forte esta totalmente alinhada. ABSTRACT: The Fortim Santa Maria da Barra, fortress built in the seventeenth century, is one of the monuments of fallen military representative character of the colonial period. The same went for changes in its structure and visual image when it was incorporated elements, especially in its composition as set architectural built. In this article we want to point out here the methodological procedures adopted for the project which proposes to restore the set with the insertion of new use: the offices of the Foundation AVINA Brazil - Marine Resources, Coastal and Water. -
