Bcnl1909a.Pdf 2 From the Chairman September 2019 A warm September welcome to everyone, we have a lot to look forward to as autumn approaches, with the Dartmoor working trials and November open show on the horizon. Plans for the autumn trials and show are taking shape thanks to the hard work of Sam and Rob respectively. The trials schedule was distributed with the summer newsletter giving plenty of time for members to enter their hounds. It is interesting to note that the “Dartmoor Commoners” have asked for all hounds to be leashed for this event, and of course we have to honour their request. Unfortunately it is becoming more common for this type of ruling to affect bloodhound trials. Schedules for the open show should accompany this newsletter and I hope you will all support our judge Sue Finnett. If we are to maintain a supply for the future, the breed needs to provide opportunities for new judges. However, in order to achieve this, we need your support to make it worthwhile continuing to provide two open shows each year. Of course these shows are also the ideal platform for introducing hounds to the show ring. Nick wrote an article on colour in the summer newsletter and Mac has written another for this edition, both prompted by the proposal to delete red & tan from the KC breed standard. The Kennel Club have now confirmed that the proposed amendment to the Bloodhound Breed Standard colour clause will be effective from 1st September 2019, when the website and printed versions of the standard will be updated. The following wording has been approved: Colour Black and tan; liver and tan; red. Darker colours sometimes interspersed with lighter or badger-coloured hair and sometimes flecked with white. Small amount of white permissible on chest, feet and tip of tail. Early planning for the AGM and elections starts at this time of year so please read the notifications in this newsletter and give serious consideration to helping with the governance of the club. We would like nominations for all of the positions advertised. I have been chairman now for over eleven years and would welcome nominations for the role, so if you feel you can take us forward into the next decade please come forward, your Club needs you! Thanks for your continued support. Keith Long 3 Health Matters I am very pleased to report that we have awarded the first Gold and Platinum awards under the joint health scheme. Gold and Platinum certificates were presented to Precious Poppy Truffe Mediévale avec Farlap and CH Boru’s Fifty Mission Cap at Farlap, both owned by Sam Clark. In order to gain these awards, in addition to passing the general health and eye assessments, both hounds have received good hip/elbow, heart and degenerative myelopathy scores. This is a terrific achievement and shows what can be accomplished with a dedicated approach to health matters and I hope it encourages more members to participate in the health scheme. The Kennel Club are keen to promote participation in these schemes and it will help greatly with our quest to be removed from the category three list if we can show a high return rate from the scheme. With this in mind we are planning to hold further health clinics at the 2020 Championship Show, so please give a bumper entry and have your hounds checked by the attending veterinary specialists. Dear Members “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party.” …is a phrase concocted in the early 20th Century to assist would – be typists in their honing of the skills whilst learning the typewriter keyboard. Others, as I did, learned the phrase whilst learning to write as an infant pupil. As I intend to stand down as Treasurer of The Bloodhound Club at the next AGM, (February 2020) the time is right for all good Members to come to the aid of The Club and make themselves known to the Chairman, or any Committee Member. Don’t think that a high degree of business acumen is required, handling The Club accounts is a little like handling your own household accounts, also there’s software to assist you in record keeping which you may choose not to use, it’s entirely up to you. (Currently I’m using www.clubtreasurer.com, a Cloud based program, which you can look up on the internet.) But you might prefer to use your own money program with which you are more familiar.

  • Dog Breed Characteristics & Behavior
Behavior & Training 415.506.6280 Available B&T Services Dog Breed Characteristics & Behavior Why is it important to know about the characteristics and behavior of different breeds? All dogs are individuals and have their own personalities. At the same time, different breeds tend to also have certain characteristics that help define that particular breed. This information can be helpful to you when you are choosing a dog or trying to understand his behavior. The AKC (American Kennel Club) places dog breeds within seven different groups. In order to account for the different behaviors within a particular group, some groups can be further subdivided into families. Herding group: Breeds in this group were bred to herd sheep and cattle. They do this by stalking and staring, barking and/or nipping at their charges. They are bred to be intelligent, athletic and diligent and they are very trainable. Dogs from this group will do best with lots of exercise. They do even better if they have a job such as agility where they can use their natural athletic ability to navigate an agility course. Barking can be a problem if they are bored and they may attempt to “herd” their people-pack by nipping and chasing. • Basset Hound History.Pages
A Brief History of the Breed The Basset Hound is a long, low, scenting hound of French ancestry. His many admirers consider him to be among the most beautiful and unusual of all hounds, his dignified look owing in great part to a large, majestic head adorned with long, velvety ears, a wrinkled brow and dark, soulful eyes. The Basset Hound remains one of the most easily recognizable of all dog breeds. THE Basset Français, or the Basset Hound, as he is known to us, is undoubtedly one of the oldest breeds of dogs, and has existed in France in exactly the same type that he does today for many centuries. The French, however, have kept no systematic records of sports and sporting dogs, and it is only within the last few years, since the English have taken up the breed, that the history of the Basset Hound has been collected and written. They were down to the seventeenth century known in France as Chiens d'Artois, but since then this name has been transferred to and used only to designate the large Picardy Hounds, and the breed under discussion has been given the name of Basset. The Basset Français and the Basset Allemand, or, as he is better known, the Dachshund, had undoubtedly a common origin; but the Basset Hound of today has maintained all the characteristics of a true Hound, whereas the Dachshund has some of the attributes of a Terrier. The statement in the Basset Hound Standard for the FEDERATION CYNOLOGIQUE INTERNATIONALE (FCI) states: The Basset was reputedly bred by monks in France in the Middle Ages to hunt in heavy cover and is able to hold its nose close to the ground.

  • Quiet Creek Bloodhounds a Lifetime of Crowning Achievements
Exceptional Hounds QUIET CREEK BLOODHOUNDS A LIFETIME OF CROWNING ACHIEVEMENTS About an hour and half from Hollywood, tucked in the San Joaquin Hills of Laguna Canyon in California, is a kennel called Quiet Creek Bloodhounds. Many blue-ribbon hounds track their beginning to Quiet Creek and breeder Susan LaCroix Hamil. A famous movie star Bloodhound, “Rocky” (CH Quiet Creek’s Stand By Me), who was “Hubert” in the 2000 comedy “Best in Show,” came from Quiet Creek. In a hilarious scene, Christopher Guest as owner Harlan Pepper takes Hubert on a walk in the woods before a dog show. “Bloodhounds have a great nose, and they can also talk,” says Pepper, scrunching the loose skin on Hubert’s fore- head as the hound smooches his cheek. “His mind is like telepathy telling the judge, ‘Hey, judge, I know what you’re thinking. I am the best dog in the whole ring.’” “I heard about auditions for Best in Show and took Rocky and several Bloodhounds for Christopher Guest to see, and when we took Rocky out, Mr. Guest went right to him,” says Susan, the 2006 American Kennel Club (AKC) Hound Group Quiet Creek Bloodhound Breeder of the Year. “Rocky was a dog who could walk in a breeder Susan LaCroix Hamil room and capture everyone's attention. He acted like a star.” cuddles a 7-week-old puppy. Rocky was sired by a real Best in Show winner, CH Badger Creek Druid. Serendipitously, Susan brought the young male a call home to husband to her kennel in 1991 after a Dr.

UTILIZATION: Scent hound for large game venery, service dog, tracking dog and family dog. It was and it must always remain a hound which due to its remarkable sense of smell is foremost a leash hound, often used not only to follow the trail of wounded game as in the blood scenting trials but also to seek out missing people in police operations. Due to its functional construction, the Bloodhound is endowed with great endurance and also an exceptional nose which allows it to follow a trail over a long distance and difficult terrain without problems. FCI-CLASSIFICATION: Group 6 Scent hound and related breeds. Section 1 Scent hounds. 1.1 Large sized hounds. With working trial. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: Large scent hound and excellent leash hound, with very ancient antecedents. For centuries it has been known and appreciated for its exceptional nose and its great talent for the hunt. It was bred in the Ardennes by the monks of the Abbaye de Saint-Hubert. It is presumed to descend from black or black and tan hounds hunting in packs which were used in the 7th century by the monk Hubert, who was later made a bishop and who when canonised became the patron saint of hunters.
