2 From the Chairman September 2019

A warm September welcome to everyone, we have a lot to look forward to as autumn approaches, with the Dartmoor working trials and November open show on the horizon. Plans for the autumn trials and show are taking shape thanks to the hard work of Sam and Rob respectively. The trials schedule was distributed with the summer newsletter giving plenty of time for members to enter their . It is interesting to note that the “Dartmoor Commoners” have asked for all hounds to be leashed for this event, and of course we have to honour their request. Unfortunately it is becoming more common for this type of ruling to affect bloodhound trials.

Schedules for the open show should accompany this newsletter and I hope you will all support our judge Sue Finnett. If we are to maintain a supply for the future, the breed needs to provide opportunities for new judges. However, in order to achieve this, we need your support to make it worthwhile continuing to provide two open shows each year. Of course these shows are also the ideal platform for introducing hounds to the show ring.

Nick wrote an article on colour in the summer newsletter and Mac has written another for this edition, both prompted by the proposal to delete red & tan from the KC breed standard. have now confirmed that the proposed amendment to the Bloodhound Breed Standard colour clause will be effective from 1st September 2019, when the website and printed versions of the standard will be updated. The following wording has been approved:

Colour Black and tan; liver and tan; red. Darker colours sometimes interspersed with lighter or badger-coloured hair and sometimes flecked with white. Small amount of white permissible on chest, feet and tip of tail.

Early planning for the AGM and elections starts at this time of year so please read the notifications in this newsletter and give serious consideration to helping with the governance of the club. We would like nominations for all of the positions advertised. I have been chairman now for over eleven years and would welcome nominations for the role, so if you feel you can take us forward into the next decade please come forward, your Club needs you!

Thanks for your continued support. Keith Long 3 Health Matters I am very pleased to report that we have awarded the first Gold and Platinum awards under the joint health scheme. Gold and Platinum certificates were presented to Precious Poppy Truffe Mediévale avec Farlap and CH Boru’s Fifty Mission Cap at Farlap, both owned by Sam Clark. In order to gain these awards, in addition to passing the general health and eye assessments, both hounds have received good hip/elbow, heart and degenerative myelopathy scores. This is a terrific achievement and shows what can be accomplished with a dedicated approach to health matters and I hope it encourages more members to participate in the health scheme. The Kennel Club are keen to promote participation in these schemes and it will help greatly with our quest to be removed from the category three list if we can show a high return rate from the scheme. With this in mind we are planning to hold further health clinics at the 2020 Championship Show, so please give a bumper entry and have your hounds checked by the attending veterinary specialists. Dear Members

“Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party.” …is a phrase concocted in the early 20th Century to assist would – be typists in their honing of the skills whilst learning the typewriter keyboard. Others, as I did, learned the phrase whilst learning to write as an infant pupil.

As I intend to stand down as Treasurer of The Bloodhound Club at the next AGM, (February 2020) the time is right for all good Members to come to the aid of The Club and make themselves known to the Chairman, or any Committee Member.

Don’t think that a high degree of business acumen is required, handling The Club accounts is a little like handling your own household accounts, also there’s software to assist you in record keeping which you may choose not to use, it’s entirely up to you. (Currently I’m using www.clubtreasurer.com, a Cloud based program, which you can look up on the internet.) But you might prefer to use your own money program with which you are more familiar.

The financial year ends on October 31st and the AGM follows in the New Year when the previous year’s accounts are presented to the Membership by you, the Treasurer.

If you enjoy being associated with pedigree and in particular, the noble bloodhound, and you feel that you would like to support your breed and put something back into it then this position could be for you. I am sure you’ll enjoy working with your committee as much as I have and for many years to come. Best wishes Paul Letheren. New Member Notice All new membership applications are at the discretion of the Committee. The following have applied to become members of the Bloodhound Club, Welcome to all! Anthony O'Shea & Sarah Laxton from West Yorkshire David & Lesley Davis from Surrey New applications will be submitted for approval at the next committee meeting. 8 Copper Arts & Crafts Plaque The Club has been given a fairly large plaque/shield. It is approximately 19" diameter, and is from the Arts and Crafts movement. This was donated by Jon Roy who lives near Leicester. He is shortly emigrating to Australia and wanted it to go where it would be really appreciated. It was hand made by his great uncle (who he was named after) in the 1920's and is a splendid example of craftsmanship. Jon never met his namesake and is not aware of any direct link to bloodhounds, although it does seem likely that there could have been a connection. The plaque is in excellent condition apart from a small loose section in the mahogany frame and we are indebted to Jon for presenting it to us. The committee will now discuss how we should best utilise it.

11 HOW ALL THE COLOURS CAN COME FROM MATING OF TWO BLACK NOSED REDS M Barwick Articles on basic bloodhound colour types and how they come about genetically have appeared in the Club magazines from time to time since the 1970’s, if not before. But it is some years since we had one, and newer members may not be familiar with the ins and outs. I wondered if it would be of any interest to approach the subject by way of a an example of a possible family tree. I make no claim to have a general knowledge of genetics, but am simply recycling what other people have written regarding bloodhounds.

Two genes are involved. Each animal carries 2 copies of each gene, and passes one from each pair randomly to its offspring. ‘Homozygous’ = carrying two identical copies of a gene, as opposed to ‘heterozygous’ = carrying two different copies.

1. The 'Brown' Gene or locus, which has two variants or alleles: B = Black b = brown or liver B is dominant b is recessive. Controls nose & eye colour, and the black or liver in a two-colour hound’s coat

12 2. The ‘Agouti’ Gene or locus, which in dogs in general has more variants, but in the bloodhound can be regarded as governing the distribution of the tan, (red, tawny) colour over basic black or liver. Only these alleles appear in the bloodhound: Ay = No saddle, ie red in bloodhound terms, asa = saddle pattern, at = blanket pattern. Ay is dominant, asa is recessive, at is recessive to both the others. In a gene pair the effect of a recessive allele is nullified if it is partnered with a dominant llele. So: BB and Bb pairings produce black. Only bb produces liver. AyAy, Ayasa Ayat all produce a monocolour (red) asaasa asaat produce a saddle pattern. Only atat produces the blanket pattern.

In any mating the gene make-up of sire and dam is interchangeable, as the genes are transmitted and combined randomly.

The sequence starts with 2 Red to L/t matings, which in this case could not produce L/t or Liver nosed red because neither of the reds carries the recessive b liver variant to pass on. Red to L/t matings have generally been avoided, because it was thought that they were what produced the liver-nosed red, which for some reason was regarded as ‘wrong’. Two Red to B/t matings (ie if Bb were substituted for bb in both the dams) could produce the same outcome.

In the last generation, the homozygous liver-nosed red could only be produced if both parents were reds, but the others in the litter, including the liver-nosed red, could be produced by red to B/t, ie if asa or at were substituted for Ay in either of the parents.

As it stands, the B/t and L/t puppies would be saddle pattern, but if at were substituted for asa throughout the table, they would be blanket pattern.

The production of a homozygous red (liver or black nosed) requires both parents to be red, and according to Piper, must happen from time to time, or it is a mathematical certainty that the red will disappear sooner or later, as it presumably did before WW2, until restored by the import from Canada of Westsummerland Montgomery of Bre-Ma-Ha-Ros (b 1949). A black nosed red, homozygous for both colour and pattern, (BB AyAy), could also be produced in the final litter shown above. 13 Dennis Piper, of Abingerwood kennels, produced an analysis of bloodhound colour genetics in his book Colour Inheritance in the Bloodhound, (1969) which many in the breed used, and perhaps still use, as a guide. Dennis had a great interest in genetics, was an able mathematician, and had the resources to test his ideas with breeding experiments. He did not identify the Agouti gene as such, but suggested that there were four variants or alleles of a pattern marking gene, which he numbered 1-4, governing the amount of dark saddle which a bicolour (B/t, L/t) hound had. 1 produced a small lightish saddle, and the others progressively larger, until 4 was what produced the ‘blanket’ pattern, as we now call it. These were in a series, from 1, the most dominant, to 4, the most recessive. In addition, there was an allele which produced a saddleless or monocolour coat, which was the Red, and the most dominant of all.

The notation I have adopted is that of Roy Robinson (1989) Genetics for Breeders, more recent, and obviously based on study of dogs in general. He attributes saddle marking to the Agouti gene, but only gives one allele asa, producing all saddle-marked hounds, and a separate one at producing the ‘blanket’ pattern typical of Dobermans and Manchester for instance. The superscript ‘t’ notation refers to ‘tan point’, the tan eyebrows, lips and lower legs which appear on the blanket dog. Ay (y for yellow) is the allele which produces the monocolour dog, called yellow, tan, red, fawn, tawny in different breeds. Helpful on-line discussions I had some years ago with Dr Kylie Munyard, an Australian geneticist researching dog genetics, also contributed to the analysis.

If one looks at the Wikipedia page ‘ genetics’, under the subheading A (agouti) locus, one sees a slightly different analysis. The asa allele is missing, but - “at includes tan point and saddle tan, both of which look tan point at birth. Modifier genes in saddle tan puppies cause a gradual reduction of the black area until the saddle tan pattern is achieved.”

This at least takes account of the different amounts of dark pigment appearing on saddle pattern hounds, and the fact that newborn saddle- pattern and blanket puppies often look pretty much the same, but develop differently. Perhaps Piper’s scheme of 4 distinct saddle patterns holds true, produced by these unspecified ‘modifier genes’.

21 BELGIAN BLOODHOUND CLUB SHOW at SAINT HUBERT 31-08-2019

An annual event that every interested bloodhound lover looks forward to, is the St. Hubert show, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. An amazing décor, a park full of beautiful trees just outside the center of the old town, practically in the shadow of the historic basilica, creates a special atmosphere so essential for this event. This basilica is a famous place of pilgrimage in honor of St. Hubert, the patron saint of our beloved breed, and has been recognized as an important heritage of Wallonia, captivates visitors with its elegance and grandeur. That enthusiasts like to join this special, is shown by the number of entries. This year 80 bloodhounds were listed in the catalogue. Bloodhounders from 8 different countries, from towards the Ukraine. UK was missing! Can be caused by your own club show… There were also a lot of people who wanted to be informed about the breed, which is a very important side effect. Traditionally, the show opened with the very special sound of the hunting horns, after which the president Madame Loncke-Preyse spoke an emotional opening speech. She recalled the passing of Marianne Faucq in January of this year and the loss of Chantal Laporte 5 years ago, and Hans Denissen, cofounder of the club, 15 years ago. As usual the dogs were blessed by the very kind, sympathetic priest but not before he recalled Marianne as one of the best Bloodhound breeders of her time and mentioned her as a very important promotor for the Belgian bloodhound worldwide. The hunting horn players blow solemnly les Adieux des Maitres et des Piqueurs , people were touched by these sounds. It was precisely the style that Marianne loved. The judging started, Mr. Rudy Smits, breeder with the affix “van Grunsven”, had the honour to manage the hard job of judging the 80 hounds. He did it calmly and very well, everybody was satisfied and no dissonance was heard. Best babystar: bitch Philomène des Echos Saint Hubert breeder Philippe Kari, owner Eleonora Francia Best puppy: bitch Symphonie de la Meute d’Antan, breeder/owner Bigitte Eben & Marianne Biernaux Best junior: bitch Annetta Nadezhda Ksemi, breeder Olga Ivanova, owner Lenka Valtova Best Head: male Marksbury Loyalty, breeder Sue Emtys-Jones, owner Rodolfo AntoniniBest dog BOS: Ch. Infinity Star Live for Boudewijn, breeder Y. Ilarinova, owner A. Rothengatter Best veteran and BOB: Ch. Bellefleur van Bockxgrave, breeder Bert van Wijk, owner Petr Podavka 22 The judge found his BOB in the 10 years old bitch from the veteran class. I had mixed feelings at this victory. First of all a compliment for the condition and the lovely type of the bitch, second, it is remarkable that the younger bitches could not compete. In the break the club organized a barbecue, home-made, in which 106 people participated! What a gigantic job for Mrs. Vandenhove, member of the committee. The day ended with the award ceremony. The table was full of prizes for several winners! Sekou and Nate Semega Some friends of Marianne, Ruth and Colin with the Trophee Avery, Pat and Ken Miller, Brigitte and Marc Nooytens, Carin and Chris Deckers, Lily Ickeringill , Math Hendriks and myself had donated the Marianne Faucq Memorial for BOB. A sympathetic cousin and sweet niece, Sékou and Nate Semega, were representing the family during the whole day and awarded the special gift. All in all a wonderful special day to remember. Looking already forward to next year, the 35th Club show, first weekend of September. Hope to meet you there, Ans Denissen-van der Borst 23 Hound & About

Welcome to the first edition of Hound and About were we see what goes on with our hounds away from the shows and trials. Lets start this edition by congratulating our members Hayl and Matt on the birth of their beautiful baby Ivy who was born back in June, Lennox her big Hound brother is doing a great job looking after her and we wish them all the best and look forward to seeing them at future events. Every hound and dog lover must be familiar with the More Than insurance

advert currently on TV, where the Bloodhound is playing the guitar along side the cat on the harmonica. We are proud to announce that this handsome hound

24 is called Porter and belongs to Rob and Evelyn down in Taunton. Porter is already very successful in the show ring and trials so its understandable that he is becoming very successful on the TV screen with a kids tv show for the BBC and 3 adverts under his collar we look forward to seeing a lot more of him on our screens. Last but certainly not least we have our own hound Ralph, who my partner Daisy and I are so proud of as he has recently become the new face of Webbox Naturals new online campaign,

Ralph really came into his own and loved showing off for the camera so much that a French photographer called Clementine Schneidermann used him for a Gucci clothing campaign for Vogue Italia.

If you have or know of a hound with a story and would like to have it published please contact myself at [email protected]

25 KEEPING TRACK As the summer draws to a close, we still have a few garden and plant-tunnel jobs to complete. Everything was going so well until we most sadly, lost our Zappa, Winni, his mum, and our Poetry within two months to three different forms of cancer. It was a terrible shock and broke our hearts. We still miss them so very much… As my readers know, I always take back my puppies that I have bred at any age should their owners be no longer able to keep them. Over the past forty-odd years I think I have had to take back, at most, three or four hounds over quite a few litters. As it turned out, due to ill health with one owner and a personal problem with another owner, we have now taken back three of our Z Litter liver girls and also Poe’s brother. They have fitted in perfectly and made us both and old Legend very happy indeed because he, like us, was in an awful state after his family suddenly died. During the summer show season, after some questionable behaviour, I was requested by a number of our breed exhibitors to write an important reminder about the correct Ringside Etiquette. First and foremost, we are only the custodians of our beloved Bloodhound breed, so in a perfect world we should all work together as a team to breed, trial, and/or exhibit our hounds and ourselves in the best way possible. Sadly, when that fails, the breed custodians get to become known as difficult and unfriendly, which causes the show and trial entry numbers to dwindle. Dog showing and trialing are supposed to be an enjoyable hobby and sport. When that ceases to be the case, it is downhill from there… Less new people will become willing to join a breed with in fighting and it begins to loose existing enthusiasts, which is the death knell for a beloved breed of dog. I covered this in more detail in my Our Dog’s breed notes recently, but to summarise, the first rule at the ringside is to always be courteous to any other exhibitors and/or breed enthusiasts who are viewing the judging. We all have our own views on judging,

26 etc. but should you disagree with any decisions please don’t air your views at the ringside. The second rule is to always keep one’s hound under strict control and do not allow it to grumble or lunge at other dogs or humans. Keep the hound or hounds on a short leash if they have a tendency to do so, and if a hound does manage to upset another dog or human, please immediately correct its bad behaviour and apologise to all concerned. A correction and an apology go a long way to diffuse an upsetting situation if no blood has been drawn. If the owner, certified trainer, or behaviourist cannot correct such behaviour, the hound should be left at home and not be used for breeding. The third rule, which I was taught by example over forty years ago, was to applaud all class winning and final winning hounds, no matter how one felt about the judge’s decision on the day. When I moved here, I found it strange that this practise was almost non- existent at many shows, although, other breeds still seemed to do it. It is sad, because no matter what we feel about the judging or the exhibitors involved, applause is psychologically a team building process, which could help to bring our breed together. So please do make an effort to applaud all the winners and their hounds no matter what your personal views may be. It also lends to a more positive attitude around the ring, which encourages future Bloodhound enthusiasts to look more closely at our beloved breed. Last but not least, the forth rule is to be friendly, kind, and help new comers to the breed, no matter who they may have bought their puppy from or even if they bred it themselves, like I did when I began showing. They will hopefully become an important part of the continuation of our beloved breed when we are no longer able to do so. We were all novices when we began to show, so please remember how it felt to know no one and how the kindness of some exhibitors made you feel welcome enough to continue to show your hound.

27 It costs nothing to be well-mannered, kind, and friendly to each other. Let us all turn over a new leaf and begin to practise these few, but most important rules, at future shows and trials and perhaps we will all then be able to find enough common ground to build new and better relationships around the show ring and beyond. I have covered the four most important rules that I was taught, some of which were by example. Should my readers have any further rules that they would like me to add, please let me know? It was great to see that two of our Bloodhounds did very well in the Hound Group recently. In July, at Southampton and District Canine Society Show, Emma Watson’s Scentall Zorro was shortlisted in the Group under judge, Richard Morris. Just after that at Paignton, Sam Clarke’s Boru’s Fifty Mission Cap at Farlap (Imp) won Group 3 under judge, Jeff Horswell. Many congratulations to both hounds and their owners! I may have missed some open show group wins so please let me know if your hound did well in a group line up in the past year or two. The first ever Oxfordshire Bloodhound Bash took place on the 28th of July. Debbie Pownall reported that it was a great success and both hounds and humans had a most enjoyable day. It is lovely to see that Bloodhound lovers in both the northern and southern regions of the country can now enjoy Bloodhound Lifeline’s Bloodhound Bash. Very well done! Bloodhound Life-line will be holding their annual Bloodhound Bash on the 8th of September at Ashwood Brow Farm, Reed Lane, Antrobus, Cheshire CW9 6JL. The show opens at 10 am and judging will begin at 11 am. Their judge will by Marilyn Wright. There are cups to be won and some lovely rosettes. There will also be fab food, the shop, teas and coffees, and most importantly, wonderful dogs and people. Everything to make it a most enjoyable

28 day like it is every year. Please contact Debbie Pownall at 01925 730606 for further details. Please do go along to support Bloodhound Rescue. I see that the KC is going to review making six more shows into general championship shows, which is good news. Unfortunately, they will also be reviewing the allocation of CCs per breed. Our breed’s show entry numbers have considerably decreased over the past years, so I hope that Bloodhounds do not loose CCs, which in my view, would not encourage a regrowth of show entry numbers. Many of us have not been able to show over the past year or two because of various circumstances, like our move and renovation commitments and breeders breeding their litters, which is a full time job for some months. I just hope the KC will take into consideration that the numerically small breeds rely on the breeders to continue the breed so do not decrease our CC numbers in future years. Still on KC news, the Judges Competency Framework (JCF) is on hold due to the Members taking forward the AGM resolution to carry out an assessment of the JCF by a review panel, which is presently being formed. It will be interesting to see the outcome. The ABB has announced that they are delighted that Margaret Billett has accepted the position of President of the ABB and Leonarda Pogodzinski will be the new Vice President. Both have been in and have greatly supported our breed for a very long time. Many congratulations. Once again, I would like to thank all my readers that have contributed news and information to make my articles possible. I will bring you more news in the December edition.
