2 From the Chairman September 2019 A warm September welcome to everyone, we have a lot to look forward to as autumn approaches, with the Dartmoor working trials and November open show on the horizon. Plans for the autumn trials and show are taking shape thanks to the hard work of Sam and Rob respectively. The trials schedule was distributed with the summer newsletter giving plenty of time for members to enter their hounds. It is interesting to note that the “Dartmoor Commoners” have asked for all hounds to be leashed for this event, and of course we have to honour their request. Unfortunately it is becoming more common for this type of ruling to affect bloodhound trials. Schedules for the open show should accompany this newsletter and I hope you will all support our judge Sue Finnett. If we are to maintain a supply for the future, the breed needs to provide opportunities for new judges. However, in order to achieve this, we need your support to make it worthwhile continuing to provide two open shows each year. Of course these shows are also the ideal platform for introducing hounds to the show ring. Nick wrote an article on colour in the summer newsletter and Mac has written another for this edition, both prompted by the proposal to delete red & tan from the KC breed standard. The Kennel Club have now confirmed that the proposed amendment to the Bloodhound Breed Standard colour clause will be effective from 1st September 2019, when the website and printed versions of the standard will be updated. The following wording has been approved: Colour Black and tan; liver and tan; red. Darker colours sometimes interspersed with lighter or badger-coloured hair and sometimes flecked with white. Small amount of white permissible on chest, feet and tip of tail. Early planning for the AGM and elections starts at this time of year so please read the notifications in this newsletter and give serious consideration to helping with the governance of the club. We would like nominations for all of the positions advertised. I have been chairman now for over eleven years and would welcome nominations for the role, so if you feel you can take us forward into the next decade please come forward, your Club needs you! Thanks for your continued support. Keith Long 3 Health Matters I am very pleased to report that we have awarded the first Gold and Platinum awards under the joint health scheme. Gold and Platinum certificates were presented to Precious Poppy Truffe Mediévale avec Farlap and CH Boru’s Fifty Mission Cap at Farlap, both owned by Sam Clark. In order to gain these awards, in addition to passing the general health and eye assessments, both hounds have received good hip/elbow, heart and degenerative myelopathy scores. This is a terrific achievement and shows what can be accomplished with a dedicated approach to health matters and I hope it encourages more members to participate in the health scheme. The Kennel Club are keen to promote participation in these schemes and it will help greatly with our quest to be removed from the category three list if we can show a high return rate from the scheme. With this in mind we are planning to hold further health clinics at the 2020 Championship Show, so please give a bumper entry and have your hounds checked by the attending veterinary specialists. Dear Members “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party.” …is a phrase concocted in the early 20th Century to assist would – be typists in their honing of the skills whilst learning the typewriter keyboard. Others, as I did, learned the phrase whilst learning to write as an infant pupil. As I intend to stand down as Treasurer of The Bloodhound Club at the next AGM, (February 2020) the time is right for all good Members to come to the aid of The Club and make themselves known to the Chairman, or any Committee Member. Don’t think that a high degree of business acumen is required, handling The Club accounts is a little like handling your own household accounts, also there’s software to assist you in record keeping which you may choose not to use, it’s entirely up to you. (Currently I’m using www.clubtreasurer.com, a Cloud based program, which you can look up on the internet.) But you might prefer to use your own money program with which you are more familiar.
