COACHES CORNER PE / Athletics Newsletter Submission March 2020 Wow, here we are already in March!! It’s always a busy time at Louis, and it’s not slowing down much, so here’s what’s been going on in February and what’s coming!! Junior Varsity Men’s Basketball: Congratulations to the Junior Varsity Men Basketball on winning the Consolation Final 63-59 over Spruce Grove Composite in the Salisbury Jr. Sabre Swoosh Invitational Basketball Tournament.. Mother Margaret Mary Hoopla Invitational Basketball Tournament Consolation Champs… Tournament Allstars: Jack Metcalfe, adrian Kovacs, Keenan McNeil. Junior High Senior Girls Basketball Team: Congratulations to the Senior Girls for winning our very own SENIOR HOOPS TOURNAMENT. Special Congrats to #2 Winnie Majok for being named the Tournament MVP. Senior Girls Basketball Team at Junior High Tri-Prov (Harry Ainlay). Congratulations to Ximena Ng- Gomez, Winnie Majok for being named Tournament All Stars and Layla Matthews for being named Tournament MVP. Junior High Senior Boys Basketball Team: Congratulations to the LSL Senior Boys Basketball Team for finishing 3rd place in our own SENIOR HOOPS Basketball Tournament. Special congratulations to Tournament Allstar: #7 Djetzer Cuevas Junior Junior Boys and Girls Basketball Teams: It makes me smile to see these young boys and girls compete in athletics at our school. They have so much school spirit and enthusiasm and reminds us adults why we play sports and the impact that it has on our lives. Junior Junior Boys Basketball: Father Michael Troy Basketball Tournament – LSL finished 2nd place losing a heartbreaker to TD Baker. Junior Junior Girls Basketball Team: Congratulations to the Junior Junior Girls Basketball Team LSL 2 for winning the GOLD Medal Championship at the Father Michael Troy Tournament!! Also, Congratulations to LSL 1 for a great Tournament!! Varsity Women Basketball Team: Congratulations to Kaitlyn Weinkauf, Shauna Castillo, Francesca “Paris” Fernando, Jenna Shultz and Makenna Keylor on playing their last game in a Barons Uniform. Your enthusiasm and work ethic was what being a Baron is all about. Upcoming Tournaments: Jr. Jr. Boys and Girls JUNIOR HOOPS March 5-7th (AT LSL – COME OUT AND CHEER ON YOUR BARONS) Spring League BASKETBALL: All of our basketball players are encouraged to tryout for different Spring League Teams this year. There was a lot of growth this year within all of our Basketball Teams and we want to see our athletes continue to develop and improve their skills!! BADMINTON: Varsity Badminton has begun for High School, with tryouts already underway. Mr. Jaret Peel, Mr. Darren Zeggil, Ms. Joanna Dimatatac, Mr. Luis Carcia and Mr. John Dol Dol are the coaches this year and are excited to get the season going. Our league starts March 6th with LSL competing in Division I/II. We will also be attending the H.A.B.I.T (Harry Ainlay Badminton Invitational Tournament) March 12-13th, RBI (Romero Badminton Invitational) April 3rd-4thth, and Concordia Tournament April 4-5th. Zone Championships April 18th (Singles); April 14th (Doubles); April 17th (Mixed Doubles) – All Zone Events held at Saville. Provincials this year is April 30 – May 2nd in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Junior High Badminton Team: Coached by Mr. Marc Lapierre. Tryouts will being in early March for all grade 7- 9 Boys and Girls. March 16th 3-4pm CM Gym (Grade 7 olnly) 4-5pm (Grade 8/9) March 17th 3-4pm CM Gym (Grade 7 olnly) 4-5pm (Grade 8/9) March 18th 3-5pm CM Gym (All Grades) Varsity High School Track and Field: Will begin right after Spring Break. Please see Mr. Peel or Mr. Nsaliwa for more details. Running Room Games: Please sign up with Mr. Peel or Mr. Nsaliwa. The event takes place on March 10th and 14th at the Butterdome!! Both Junior High (Mr. McCarville) and High School (Mr. Horpyniuk and Ms. Yarmuch) will be coaching these teams. BARONS HOCKEY ACADEMY The Barons Hockey Academy recently completed their on ice and off ice testing: HOCKEY ACADEMY TESTING Varsity CURLING – Allison Mallon, Kaitlyn Weinkauf, Makenna Keylor, Gabby Desmasais Congratulations to Allison Mallon, Kaitlyn Weinkauf, Makenna Keylor, and Gabby Desmasais for finishing with the Silver Medal in the Metro Edmonton Varsity Women’s Curling City Championship!! What an accomplishment. Barons in the News: HOCKEY – Brett Butz Western Canadian Crown Invitational tournament. Brett’s Team (KC Centennials M15 AAA) won the bronze medal game 11-4 over CAC. He and his line mates all made the scoring leader board!!! Barons in the News: GYMNASTICS WILL TUMARMA competing in the “Coplain Classic”. He got 1st on the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, highbar and all around (JUNIOR LEVEL). Will also competed in an event called the Strathcona Gym Challenge and it is a trials for the National Gymnastics Championships, which he qualified for. Will finished 1st on floor and pommel horse, 2nd on parallel barons, 3rd on highbar, 4th on vault and rings… and 3rd ALL AROUND!! Barons in the News: HOCKEY – David Chorney David set the league record for most points in the season with 79...he assisted on his team's second goal. “A SEASON TO REMEMBER!” David broke the REMHL scoring record with 35 (Goals) + 45 (Assists) = 80 pts in 32 regular season games. The previous high was 78. He also broke the SSAC record. He averaged 2.5 pts a game and he has now never missed a league game in 3 years with SSAC playing in all 96 regular season games. I think he may have the ironman record!! Video.mov Barons in the News: HOCKEY – Alexander Chorney Alexander had a wonderful experience representing Edmonton at the Alberta Winter games in Airdrie, Alberta this weekend. He was with zone 5, team yellow. His team was 1-2 in their pool and missed out on being in the medal round by 1 goal. He had 3 assists in 4 games and memories that will last a lifetime. Barons in the News: HOCKEY - Jarred White Congratulations to former Barons Hockey Academy Player Jarred White for being named to the 2020 AJHL All Academic Team for the third year in a row!! The players nominated are deemed to have a commendable dedication to their studies at either the high school or post-secondary level, along with a grade score reflective of their academic success. These players demonstrate the qualities of a strong student-athlete working to further their athletic and academic pursuit. Sherwood Park Crusaders captures the Dave Dachuk Trophy for Regular Season Champions Barons in the News: Roller HOCKEY – Austin Steger Congratulations to Barons Hockey Academy Alumni Austin Steger who plays for Lindenwood University for winning the GPCIHL Regional Roller Hockey Championships!! Barons in the News: SKI – Jason Proche Jason Proche Alumni (1990) finished 2nd place in the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Race (men 40-49 years of age) and 10th overall (out of 200) with a time of 3:25 for 55km. race took place in the Blackfoot Recreation Area. Barons in the News: HOCKEY – Deklynn Woijtas and Madison Teague Deklynn Woijtas and Madison Teague finish their season with the KINGS… Friends for life!! Barons in the News: HOCKEY – Ryan Hiscock, Gavin Thurston, Presley Gordon SSAC Midget AAA Ryan Hiscock, Gavin Thurston and Presley Gordon last game!! Good luck in all your future endeavors playing hockey!! Barons in the News: Women’s Hockey – Ally Wilson Congratulations to LSL Student #39 Ally Wilson for playing her last season for the PANDAS!!! Barons in the News: VOLLYBALL – Lauren Maik and Anneliese Redl Congratulations to Lauren Maik and Anneliese Redl for capturing the Bronze Medal (out of 46 teams) in the U16 Girls Premier 1 North Volleyball Club Tournament. Way to go girls!! Barons in the News: VOLLYBALL – Jolie Eastman and Raven Ogboduu Jolie and Raven play for the U15 Nooks Women’s Club Volleyball Team. Barons in the News: HOCKEY – Tyler Benson Tyler Benson former LSL student playing in his 1st NHL Hockey Game for the Edmonton Oilers… Barons in the News: Ringette – Kaylee Kristjanson, Makenna Keylor, Savanna Kucher, and Ciara Wright Kaylee Kristjanson (Alumni), Makenna Keylor, Savanna Kucher (Alumni), Ciara Wright (Alumni) won the gold medal in the “Wood Tournament”… a tournament they have not won in 17 years.
