Alberta’s young athletes represent the future of sport in our province. You have all worked incredibly hard to earn the honour of representing your region at these games. The perseverance and commitment you have shown will serve you well not only in your dedicated sport, but also throughout your entire life. Events like the Alberta Winter Games contribute greatly to our province’s quality of life, and inspire all Albertans to engage in winter activities to lead healthy, active lives. These games are also an excellent opportunity for our athletes to showcase their skills, challenge their own personal bests, and create lifelong memories. Special thanks to the supportive families, friends, volunteers, and organizers who create a wonderful 2018 Alberta Winter Games experience. Your energy and enthusiasm has helped make a memorable experience for both athletes and spectators. Best wishes to all of the competitors. Rachel Notley February 16-19, 2018 4 Message from the Mayor Welcome to Wood Buffalo! We are excited to have you with us for the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. Although perhaps best known as the heart of Canada’s oil sands, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is one of the largest and most diverse in the country. Located in northcentral Alberta, and extending to the boundaries of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, the region offers over 66,000 km2 of natural beauty to explore. Throughout history, people have come here in search of their dreams. We hope that you will also reach your goals and find success here as you compete with other top young athletes and coaches from across Alberta. The next four days are a celebration of sport and the pursuit of excellence -- and so much more. This is a special opportunity for you to enjoy new experiences, demonstrate respect and fair play, and build strong teams and friendships. We hope that the Games inspire you to be the best you can be and that the memories you make here will last a lifetime. Congratulations on being chosen to take part in the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. This is a big step in your athletic career. We are thrilled to share this experience with you and to join your family and friends in cheering you on from the stands. While you are visiting us, we hope you take time to explore what the region has to offer. Our annual WinterPLAY Festival takes place February 16-18, 2018 at sites around Fort McMurray. As MLAs for this region, we join in the excitement of welcoming all of you - along with coaches and parents - to this beautiful place we call home for the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. For the next three days, our region will be alive with the spirit of competition as nearly 3,000 young athletes strive to do their best in their selected sports. Our region has a rich sports history, and we host first-class games and tournaments in world class venues. The positive impacts of sports are numerous. Sports teaches you life lessons: It teaches patience … strategy …. how to be a leader … and a follower … That it’s okay to make mistakes … How to set goals … The success of hard work … How to win with class …. and lose with dignity … And that life isn’t always fair. Sports also brings a community together and these Games are an example of that. Thank you to the Alberta Sport Connection and all of its dedicated staff and sponsors for helping make such events as the Alberta Winter Games possible and helping young athletes reach their athletic potential.     January 22, 2010 Zone 7 athletes qualify for the 2010 Alberta Winter Games Bonnyville / Cold Lake... Approximately 248 athletes from Zone 7 have qualified to take part in the upcoming 2010 Alberta Winter Games. Zone 7 covers Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Fort McMurray and Vegreville. The 2010 Alberta Winter Games, the province’s premier multi-sport event for youth, will take place in venues in the Town of Bonnyville, the MD of Bonnyville, the City of Cold Lake and CFB 4 Wing Cold Lake from February 4 - 7. The games will involve approximately 2,300 athletes, coaches and technical officials participating in 24 different sporting events. Ranging from 11 to 17 years of age, these athletes qualified to attend the games through zone playoffs. The games will kickoff with the opening ceremonies on February 4. The next three days will be filled with exciting competition in events including alpine skiing, biathlon, figure skating, hockey and speed skating. The Alberta Games take place every two years. The 2010 Alberta Summer Games take place in the Peace Region from July 19-25. Our vision is for Alberta to have the premier sport delivery system in Canada. ASC is accountable to the Minister of Culture and Tourism. Our partners and stakeholders include: other Alberta government ministries, such as Education, Indigenous Relations, Justice and Solicitor General, agencies like the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Travel Alberta, other levels of government (federal, provincial/territorial and municipal), the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Sport Committee, provincial sport organizations, multi-sport organizations, educational institutions, Albertans and host communities for games and events. Our mission is to enhance, advocate and inspire participation and partnerships as Albertans strive for excellence in sport. ASC would like to acknowledge and thank Andrew Ference, for his leadership and guidance as Chair of the ASC from April 1, 2017 to March 1, 2018. Highlights for the 2017-18 fiscal year: Invested approximately $22 million to support all levels of sport, including $7.9 million to 82 provincial sport organizations, serving a total membership of approximately 788,000 Albertans.
