Noel Bennett received a $2000 surprise for his commitment to junior athletics this week after he was nominated as a Lotto Sportmaker. Bennett has been involved in running the Jun- ior Athletic Club since he arrived in Taupo in 1971. ‘‘I’ve always been involved in athletics and it made sense to join up with those clubs,’’ he said. Although not having children himself, has shown dedication and care for the young children on the club beyond most parents. One of his responsibilities is the accurate marking out of Taupo’s track, one of the few remaining grass athletic tracks in New Zealand, which the club is very proud of. ‘‘It can be a painstaking process and can take about four or five hours for the initial marking,’’ $99 he said. Seeing young people reach their potential through running is something Bennett enjoys see- ing as a volunteer. Designer ‘‘We had Bevan Docherty run with us,’’ he said. ‘‘Patrick Bevan was another and then he was glasses told to try out cycling, which was the right thing to do. ‘‘So you never know who is coming through.’’ Bennet was nominated for the award by Mur- ray Reid and he had no idea when he was asked to come to the clubrooms what he would be receiv- ing. ‘‘I have been injured so wasn’t sure why they needed me at the clubrooms,’’ he said. ‘‘They stitched me up well. ‘‘I was blown away.
