  • Modern Alternative Popes*
Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions.

  • Royal Gold: Reflections of Power
Podcast transcript Royal Gold: Reflections of Power The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace Wednesday, 17 December 2014 Kathryn Jones, Senior Curator of Decorative Art, Royal Collection Trust Hello, and welcome to a podcast from Royal Collection Trust where we’ll be looking at how gold has for centuries been associated with royalty. Traditionally it has been used to create the regalia and other trappings associated with coronations, yet surprisingly few items in the Royal Collection are made from solid gold. Coming up, Kathryn Jones, Curator of Decorative Arts at Royal Collection Trust, gives a lecture entitled, ‘Royal Gold: Reflections of Power’ at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. She will examine a few of these works of art in detail and explore how gold has been used to denote the highest degree of status and authority. This is an enhanced podcast so you’ll be able to see the images being spoken about on the screen of your device. [00:48] Kathryn Jones: Good afternoon everyone. A German visiting Windsor Castle in 1598 recorded that ‘The walls of the Palace shine with gold and silver’ and noted a cabinet where ‘Besides everything glitters so with silver, gold and jewels as to dazzle one’s eyes’. In 1517 Henry VIII held a great banquet at Whitehall for the Ambassadors of France and the Venetian Republic where a great buffet was placed beside the dining table. The display included silver and gold vases worth vast treasure and larger vases of silver gilt. After the banquet the plate was deliberately left on show so that the public could come and view it.

  • EIGHTEENTH- and NINETEENTH-CENTURY CORONATIONS and INAUGURATIONS in the HABSBURG MONARCHY Why Do Th Ey Matter? D
Introduction EIGHTEENTH- AND NINETEENTH-CENTURY CORONATIONS AND INAUGURATIONS IN THE HABSBURG MONARCHY Why Do Th ey Matter? d Klaas Van Gelder Royal rites and ceremonies appeal very strongly to the imagination of people worldwide. Millions of tourists gaze at the St. Edward’s Crown, the Imperial State Crown, and the other regalia in the London Tower each year. Many peo- ple know the scenes of Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953, which are frequently shown in the media. Documentary fi lms such as Th e Coronation by BBC One, broadcast in May 2018 on the occasion of the sixty-fi fth jubilee of the crowning and featuring the Queen reminiscing about her father’s and her own coronation, only add to the appeal of these rare events. Th e same allure can be observed in the case of the imperial crowns in Vienna’s Schatzkammer and the St. Stephen’s Crown of Hungary in the parliament building in Budapest—the latter referred to as the embodiment of “the constitutional continuity of Hungary’s statehood and the unity of the nation” in the country’s “fundamental law” dating from 2011.1 Analogously to popular fascination, scholarly interest in rituals accompanying and substantiating the start of a new reign—and more generally in symbolic communication—has increased steadily over the past three to four decades. New insights into the signifi cance of ritual and ceremony for power relations have in- duced new generations of historians and art historians to reconsider coronations More than Mere Spectacle Coronations and Inaugurations in the Habsburg Monarchy during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries Edited by Klaas Van Gelder https://www.berghahnbooks.com/title/VanGelderMore 2 | Klaas Van Gelder and inaugurations.
