AA Almanac1996-97 A member of the International Amateur Athletic Federation PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The past twelve months have seen Australia’s up and coming stars continue to produce outstanding results in competition both at home and overseas. For our senior stars, the Atlanta Olympic Games provided the stage for the likes of Cathy Freeman, Rohan Robinson, Louise McPaul, Nick A’Hern, Kyle Vander Kuyp and Lisa-Marie Vizaniari to do Australia proud. Whilst back home, Sydney hosted the IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics, an event in which champions of the future, such as Paul Burgess, Rosemary Hayward, Justin Anlezark, Clay Cross, Steven Madeo and Lauren Hewitt, did their bit in guiding Australia to second place on the medal tally. The focus this year will be the 6th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, in Athens. The Championships will not only provide the biggest highlight so far in the careers of many emerging champions, but will give the likes of Freeman, Robinson, Vander Kuyp and Vizaniari the opportunity to improve on their outstanding Atlanta results. We wish all our Optus Southern Stars competing in the IAAF World Championships in Athletics the very best of luck. This handbook is a vital tool for all coaches, athletes, administrators and the media and provides them with concise information on past and present achievements in athletics. Our thanks is extended to Chevron Publishing Pty. Ltd. for producing this valuable publication for Athletics Australia. Coles has funded over $500,000 in grants to participate and compete.
