  • Building Cold War Warriors: Socialization of the Final Cold War Generation
BUILDING COLD WAR WARRIORS: SOCIALIZATION OF THE FINAL COLD WAR GENERATION Steven Robert Bellavia A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Andrew M. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

In the second half of the 1970s, Brian Eno, Larry Fast, Mickey Hart, Stomu Yamashta and many other musicians blurred the lines between rock and avantgarde. Brian Eno (34), ex-keyboardist for Roxy Music, changed the course of rock music at least three times. The experiment of fusing pop and electronics on Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy (sep 1974 - nov 1974) changed the very notion of what a "pop song" is. Eno took cheap melodies (the kind that are used at the music-hall, on television commercials, by nursery rhymes) and added a strong rhythmic base and counterpoint of synthesizer. The result was similar to the novelty numbers and the "bubblegum" music of the early 1960s, but it had the charisma of sheer post-modernist genius. Eno had invented meta-pop music: avantgarde music that employs elements of pop music. He continued the experiment on Another Green World (aug 1975 - sep 1975), but then changed its perspective on Before And After Science (? 1977 - dec 1977). Here Eno's catchy ditties acquired a sinister quality.

  • ENDER's GAME by Orson Scott Card Chapter 1 -- Third
ENDER'S GAME by Orson Scott Card Chapter 1 -- Third "I've watched through his eyes, I've listened through his ears, and tell you he's the one. Or at least as close as we're going to get." "That's what you said about the brother." "The brother tested out impossible. For other reasons. Nothing to do with his ability." "Same with the sister. And there are doubts about him. He's too malleable. Too willing to submerge himself in someone else's will." "Not if the other person is his enemy." "So what do we do? Surround him with enemies all the time?" "If we have to." "I thought you said you liked this kid." "If the buggers get him, they'll make me look like his favorite uncle." "All right. We're saving the world, after all. Take him." *** The monitor lady smiled very nicely and tousled his hair and said, "Andrew, I suppose by now you're just absolutely sick of having that horrid monitor. Well, I have good news for you. That monitor is going to come out today. We're going to just take it right out, and it won't hurt a bit." Ender nodded. It was a lie, of course, that it wouldn't hurt a bit. But since adults always said it when it was going to hurt, he could count on that statement as an accurate prediction of the future. Sometimes lies were more dependable than the truth. "So if you'll just come over here, Andrew, just sit right up here on the examining table.

(8.2.19) - https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/country/8525968/chris-young-watershed- festival-playlist CHRIS YOUNG PREPS FOR WATERSHED FEST WITH PLAYLIST OF FELLOW COUNTRY SUPERSTARS: CARRIE UNDERWOOD, GARTH BROOKS & MORE More than 13 years into his career, Chris Young has shared the stage with several of country's biggest names, from Garth Brooks to Carrie Underwood. This weekend (Aug. 2-4) will be no different for the country star, as he's performing at Washington's Watershed Festival alongside Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band and Maren Morris. Young will take the fest's main stage tonight (Aug. 2), just before headliner Miranda Lambert and her Pistol Annies. To get amped for his latest festival appearance, Young put together a playlist that celebrates those who have played a role in helping him become the main-stage performer he is today. "I wanted to make a playlist that gave a nod to everyone I have toured with over the years," Young says. "I picked 18 songs by a bunch of artists that have given me an opening spot - and threw in a few of mine for fun." Young picked two of his favorite hits from nine of his fellow country superstars, including Tim McGraw's "Real Good Man," Lambert's "Kerosene" and Montgomery Gentry's "Hillbilly Shoes." And though the crooner's catalog features a handful of romantic tunes, he opted for two of his more party- starting anthems, "Raised on Country" and "Aw Naw." Whether or not you're headed to Watershed this weekend (tickets are still available here), Young's playlist will help you get in the country zone.

October 7, 2013, Issue 366 Beards Are Back: No Shave November Growth is undeniable – and we’re not just talking facial hair. No Shave November went from raising $38,000 its first year to more than $138,000 last year. For 2013, the buzzword is “teams” as stations, labels, companies and artists try to get the largest teams and biggest donations possible on behalf of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. And one station new to the NSN fold is taking things even further with a promotion that could become a model for others. For all the bald-faced rookies out there, the NSN concept is pretty simple: Stop shaving for the month of November and donate the money you might have spent on razors, shaving cream, stitches and more to St. Jude – at least Freeze Frame: Warner Bros./WMN’s Blake Shelton winds $30. The homepage is www.stjude.org/ down his Ten Times Crazier Tour in Tulsa Friday night (10/4) noshavenovember. The emphasis on teams with a surprise plaque presentation commemorating platinum is an outgrowth of last year’s event, where sales of his album Based On A True Story.... Pictured (l-r) are KTGX/Tulsa’s JJ Ryan, KWEN/Tulsa’s Matt Bradley and Karla Keifer competition between artist teams, label Cantrell, Shelton, WMN’s John Esposito, KVOO/Tulsa’s Crash Thompson teams and others led to some pretty big Poteet and Dave Austin, KJKE/Oklahoma City’s Owen Pickard donations and lots of social media traffic. and WMN’s Mark Niederhauser. The 30-date tour wrapped in Team Thompson Square took honors as the top artist Wichita the following night (10/5).

June 3, 2013, Issue 348 San Jose: Nurturing New Music If the movie Trading Places hasn’t settled the nature vs. nurture debate, perhaps the story of KRTY/San Jose and its partnership with the Rodeo Club will. Over the course of eight years, the station and 1,000-capacity bar have hosted country’s biggest names ... long before they really had names. The result is one of country’s most vibrant new music scenes. “Fans of their station are conditioned to not only embrace new music, but new acts,” says Stoney Creek VP/Promotion Chris Loss. “And they do so time and time again. And they do it with passion. I don’t know if there are any other stations that marry the on-air and live aspect better.” KRTY GM Nate Deaton breaks down the keys to the partnership’s success and recounts its remarkable history: “Probably like a lot of successful things, it got started quite by accident,” he admits. Initially, the station was hoping to find a new partner venue following the closing of local institution the Saddle Flatts Out: Big Machine’s Rascal Flatts get to know WNSH/New Rack, which had hosted everyone from Loretta to Garth. “We York’s John Foxx as the trio’s Live & Loud Tour kicked off at Jones tried a bar night at the Rodeo Club for a long time, it just never Beach in Wantagh, NY Friday (5/31). worked. We started doing shows in there in 2005 and as bad as the bar nights were, the shows were that good.” Main Event: 2013 CMA Music Festival The emphasis on new artists and new music started early.
