Prof. Dr Ivy Chung 4 A WARM HELLO On behalf of Malaysian Orthopaedic Association and the Organising Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 45th Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting 2015. The practice of Orthopaedics is ever-changing and evolving. The theme of “Current Trends & The Future In Orthopaedics” will update all attendees on the current trends and issues, and to highlight upcoming techniques and technologies which affect our practice of Orthopaedics. The Scientific Committee, headed by Professor Dr Tunku Kamarul Zaman has worked hard this past year to deliver a programme which is well-suited for every member of your Orthopaedic team, from the specialists to nurses, allied health members, Orthopaedic trainees and junior medical staffs. We are also looking forward to the free paper oral and poster presentations as well as presentations from the finalists of the hotly-contested Mahmood Merican Best Masters Thesis and Best Basic Science Poster Awards; and winners of the Subir Sengupta Best Published Clinical Paper and P. Balasubramaniam Best Published Translational Medicine Paper Awards. This meeting also focus on the future of the Orthopaedic fraternity: our trainees and junior medical staff who are considering a life in this field. For the first time, this year’s program has included sessions on the last day of the ASM which are designed specifically for these groups of attendees. The sessions will, among others, include talks on entering an Orthopaedic training programme as well as activities to help trainees prepare for their upcoming examinations. I hope our junior colleagues will find these sessions helpful. As with every conference, it is more than just attending lectures and workshops. I hope everyone makes the most of these few days to meet up with professional colleagues new and old, to refresh and strengthen our bonds of fellowship. Do take sometime outside of the conference hours to enjoy the sights, dining and shopping galore that Kuala Lumpur city centre has to offer. See you during the conference! Assoc. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin Exhibit Visit followed by Morning Tea 1000 - 1030 Thank you 6 MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR GENERAL OF HEALTH MALAYSIA First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the organisers, the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Council and Organising Committee for your immense effort in putting together this 45th Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting 2015 with the theme ‘Current Trends & The Future In Orthopaedics’. For doctors with the zeal and passion to serve, education is a lifelong endeavour. It continues on with masters followed by subspecialisation, continual research and publication of work to improve the way we practise medicine and sharing of experiences through presentations and networking in scientific meetings such as this conference. I am pleased to see efforts by Malaysian Orthopaedic Association to promote the Orthopaedics Masters programme through your Sunday workshops titled the Pre-Masters and Masters programme. Presently, Malaysia has approximately 1 orthopaedic surgeon to 49,533 people. When compared with United States with its ratio of 1 orthopaedic surgeon to 11,389 people and Australia with its ratio of 1 orthopaedic surgeon to 23,130 people, we can see that there is still a large need for more orthopaedic surgeons in our country. Let us in Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, with input from Malaysian Orthopaedic Association, work together towards producing more orthopaedic surgeons to better serve our people. We must also remember that surgeons and doctors do not work alone. With the support of nurses and allied health professionals, patients are able to achieve maximum recovery. Thus, I am encouraged to see that the organising committee has many workshops that will be running during this conference for our esteemed colleagues. Last but not least, I would like to wish all conference participants, speakers and organising committee a fruitful learning and sharing experience at this meeting. Thank you. The history of postgraduate medical education in Malaysia is not without controversy. It started in an academic setting with three 1-2 year programmes at the University of Malaya. However in the early 1970s a Bill was proposed for the establishment of the College of Physicians and College of Surgeons of Malaysia for the purpose of awarding certification in clinical specialties, styled very much on the British and Irish Royal
