Duane Swierczynski is a solid writer, based on his work on Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 and Bloodshot. That being said, Birds of Prey is not a good showing for him, and had I not read his Cable, I would have thought Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 was terrible. This book is just a terrible showing in form for him, and is just a bad story. On top of that, all the characters are just weirdly written and unenjoyable. The characters just kind of react to things but no one ever feels like they have agency. This slides in as the new 31 on the list. You are commenting using your WordPress. Pros: The characters here are wonderfully unique and consistently entertaining. Each character brings a secret to the table that will leave readers wanting to discover more. The end of the collection features poor writing and some major inconsistencies. The artwork is average at best. Overall: The first volume in this series in fun and compelling in some places but rough and boring in others. Its main draw comes from a well written cast of characters and a narrative that gets interesting about halfway through. However, the first half is overwhelmingly average and the end has a number of problems. Give this collection a chance if you are looking for some fun thrills from some well written characters. Birds of Prey Vol. This is mainly done through the characters themselves, who all bring a decent level of charm and interest to the table. However, the actually storyline is not that compelling and the writing gets pretty sloppy towards the end. This turns the book into something that has potential Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1, right now, fails to be anything greater than average. The course of the book follows the rough assembly of the titular Birds of Prey. This plays out in a way that is neither unique nor overly compelling. manages to convince some members to join the team with ease, while others take a little more convincing. Any tension over membership feels feigned though since the story plays out exactly as readers would expect. The positives though, come from the members of the team themselves. Swierczynski is able to give each character a distinct personality that allows them to shine in their own unique way. Starling is chaotic and fun, Katana is mysterious, is a delightfully evil, is noble, and Black Canary is a born leader. Every character brings something to the table and it is easy to connect with all of them. Apart from being entertaining to watch, the characters also each bring a compelling level of mystery to the story. Each member of the team harbors secrets that are either hinted at or downright addressed, at some point in the volume. These secrets are then balanced in a way where just enough is revealed to get readers interested but not enough to tell anything truly significant. This helps readers to further develop a connection with the characters and gives everyone a reason to come back for the second volume. Mystery is also one of the major positives in the otherwise generic storyline. The main villain is enigmatic and relies on altering memories and controlling minds in order to accomplish his goals. This leads to a narrative that jumps around as characters struggle to decipher missing blocks in their memory. Often times, narrative jumps like these only manage to confuse readers, but Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 way they are handled here is straightforward enough to provide mystery without overly complicating the story. While the Birds of Prey killed without hesitation near the start, Black Canary is suddenly adamant that they do not kill anyone. In addition, characters become hostile over memory gaps despite being well aware that the main villain has the ability to alter memory. Inconsistencies like these would be less noticeable over the course of a longer series but are major negatives when packed into a single volume. Artist Jesus Saiz does well in complimenting the fun action with bright pages and expressive movements. However, detail is typically lacking and there were few moments that really stood out as impressive or unique. This is noticeable in panels where characters attempt to express more extreme emotions, which just end up coming Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 as strained or simply odd. Once again, this doesn't seem like much of a reboot due to the feeling that this is an ongoing continuation of older stories. Maybe it's not, but certainly didn't have an origin story feel to it. For a newbie like me, I would've liked to have known a little more about each of the Birds, and why they decided to start the team to begin with. However, I still thought the story was very entert Bear in mind that I'm new to Birds of Prey, so I have no idea how Trouble in Mind compares with older titles. However, I still thought the story was very entertaining, and I have no complaints about the actual plot itself. The lineup goes like this: Black Canarywho is wanted for her husband's murder, is the leader of the group. I'm unclear on whether or not her being a fugitive was part of an older story line, or if this is something new to this title. Starling was a very cool character, who after some research on the web I discovered is brand-spankin' new to the DC universe. Not much has been revealed about her background, but it seems as though she may be some sort of a former government agent who has gone underground. Katana has evidently been around for quite some time, but this was my first time reading about her. She's a Japanese hero with a magic sword. Her murdered husband's and anyone else who is killed by it soul resides in that sword. She can still hear her husband, and he sort of guides her. Most of the team humors her when she Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 talking to the sword, believing she is delusional. And Poison Ivy? I thought it was a nice choice to add someone into the mix that wasn't exactly Black Canary and Starling are already a team when the book opens, while the Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 of the ladies come on board a bit later. They band together to defeat one of the I think better new villains of 52, named Choke. The identity of Choke and his true motives remain a mystery. It turns regular people into his assassins when they hear or see one of his messages. Instead of regular commands he uses different children's nursery rhymes to activate them to do different things. Since he can also alter memories leaving his victims unaware that anything had happened to themit leaves the ladies unable to tell who they can trust and who is really a Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 agent for Choke. Very good story, with a nice cliffhanger ish ending that makes me want more. View all 10 comments. Aug 09, Sesana rated it liked it Shelves: comicssuperhumans. Mixed feelings here. On one hand, Birds of Prey is a fun action comic. On the other, it's ultimately a little shallow. There are questions that are left unanswered here, but it's done in such a way that leads me to believe that the writer didn't know the answers at the time. The characters have interesting enough personalities Starling is likely to be the breakout star of the book but act in sometimes inconsistent ways. For example, Dinah seems to be just fine with killing I don't know if it's sloppy art integration, but Katana spends the entire series slicing and dicing without comment from Dinah, but suddenly in the last issue they're not supposed to be killing? And Ivy's personality and motives aren't so much ill-defined as barely sketched. Sure, it's mostly a fun read, but it was in the end more than a little shallow. Feb 07, James DeSantis rated it liked it. Well this wasn't as good as I hoped. I usually dig a lot of what Duane writes but this new team of birds of Prey just didn't gel with me. Right off the bat we have Black Canary kind of building her team from the scratch up. Gone are and Batgirl mostly and instead we have a new team with the likes of Katana and Poison Ivy on it. However, the big nasty here as planted a bomb inside of people so that they can use regular humans as weapons. This of course leads to one of our teammates get Well this wasn't as good as I hoped. This of course leads to one of our teammates getting infected and others might be on the side of betraying. Good: I enjoyed most of the costume changes. Gone are the days of ass in the face, which I love Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 but it was too much, and actual some practical costumes for once. I dug the fights, they were fast and fun. I also thought some of the new additions were cool like Katana. Bad: The rest? Not so much. Poison Ivy was one note and bad. The crazy chick who Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 bad, can't recall the name now, was also lame. I thought the storyline was kind of meh and nothing to write home about. The ending didn't do much to get me excited. This is coming from Gail's series, so it might be hard to measure up, but it didn't do much. It wasn't horrible, but I expect better. View 2 comments. Oct 10, Sam Quixote rated it liked it. Poison Ivy- really? Black Canary is wanted for murder — but we never see the murder nor is there an explanation. More importantly, why has Birds of Prey: Trouble in Mind Volume 1 Canary started this group in the first place?
