This is a book that becomes far more fun to read if you enjoy the characters. The art by Molenaar is fantastic throughout these comics capturing the fight sequences perfectly. Speaking of Starling, it appears that she has Amanda Waller on speed dial. She quickly works on strengthening the bonds between the two characters. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. It leads to complications. The collection opens with a fantastic pseudo-crossover with the Batgirl series, written by Gail Simone. The biggest point of this section seemed to be to show that Canary is losing control of her power. Storylines are listed in publication order. It can follow Oracle as her role can build tension even though she is usually far from the action. I love Gail Simone's writing, I love the team. I haven't read Simone's script, but I doubt it contains the words "upskirt" or "crotch shot. Attack on Titan Starling tortures a guy at one point in one of the best scenes from this series so far. Black Canary and Huntress's costumes are unfortunately super revealing at this point in time. Baker, PhD Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2017 Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez, PhD Superhero comic books provide a unique perspective on marginalized characters not only as objects of literary study, but also as opportunities for rhetorical analysis. There are representations of race, gender, sexuality, and identity in the costuming of superheroes that impact how the audience perceives the characters. Because of the association between iconography and identity, the superhero costume becomes linked with the superhero persona (for example the Superman “S” logo is a stand-in for the character). However, when iconography is affected by issues of tokenism, the rhetorical message associated with the symbol becomes more difficult to decode. Since comic books are sales-oriented and have a plethora of tie-in merchandise, the iconography in these symbols has commodified implications for those who choose to interact with them. When consumers costume themselves with the visual rhetoric associated with comic superheroes, the wearers engage in a rhetorical discussion where they perpetuate whatever message the audience places on that image.
