THE HOLLYWOOD YOUTH NARRATIVE AND THE FAMILY VALUES CAMPAIGN, 1980-1992 by Clare Connors Bachelor of Arts, Macalester College, 1982 Masters of Arts, University of Louisville, 1987 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2005 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Clare Connors It was defended on April 15, 2005 and approved by Dr. Marcia Landy Dr. Troy Boone Dr. Carol Stabile Dr. Lucy Fischer Dissertation Director ii THE HOLLYWOOD YOUTH NARRATIVE AND THE FAMILY VALUES CAMPAIGN, 1980-1992 Clare Connors, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2005 The dissertation seeks to identify and analyze the cultural work performed by the Hollywood youth narrative during the 1980s and early nineties, a period that James Davison Hunter has characterized as a domestic “culture war.” This era of intense ideological confrontation between philosophical agendas loosely defined as “liberal” and “conservative,” increasing social change, and social polarization and gender/sexual orientation backlash began with Ronald Reagan’s landslide victory in 1980 and continued for twelve years through the presidency of George Bush, Sr. The dissertation examines the Hollywood youth narrative in the context of the family values debate and explicates its role in negotiating and resolving social conflict in a period of intense social change and ideological confrontation. The dissertation theorizes the historic and cultural function of the Hollywood youth narrative in “translating” complex social problems into generational and familial conflicts that can be easily, if superficially, resolved through conventional Hollywood genre narrative structures. -

The townsfolk, ulti- mately, prefer legend to fact. William Hazelgrove prefers the facts. Truth, to him, is far more tan- talizing. As a writer, he’s become a champion of deconstructing history, revisiting periods in time we think we know, only to rattle preconceived notions. In the past, he’s written about the likes of First Lady Edith Wilson, President Teddy Roosevelt and noto- rious gangster Al Capone. Cultural Themes of Happy Days and That ‘70S Show
Cultural Themes of Happy Days and That ‘70s Show By Travis C. Yates Two nostalgia-based television sitcoms, Happy Days (ABC 1974-1984) and That ‘70s Show (Fox 1998-2006), serve as cultural artifacts for the decades in which their narratives take place. Though set twenty years apart the similarities between the two series are striking. The setting for each is in Wisconsin with narratives that celebrate a specific time frame (1950s in Happy Days and 1970s in That ‘70s Show ) as told through the lens of the experiences of a teenage male protagonist. Each show has an ensemble group of friends and family as central characters in the series. Both shows were tremendously successful for their respective network. Happy Days was one of the top-rated sitcoms of the 1970s (TV Guide) and That ‘70s Show was Fox’s second-longest running sitcom in the network’s history (People). Despite the surface-level similarities, Happy Days and That ‘70’s Show have a number of contrasting encoded messages, likely due to the distinctive cultural values of the eras in which they were produced. Textual analysis of both programs reveals a growing acceptance of images of drugs and sexual expression as well a more contentious display of familial relationships on television. These changes and the importance of the domestic sitcom cannot be understated. As noted by Timothy Pehlke, “Fictional families in non-animated television sitcoms model contemporary family life and have been viewed as important socializing agents, as they ‘offer implicit lessons about appropriate family life’” (115). Much of Happy Days’ success is due in part to a nostalgic longing for idyllic post-war life of the 1950s by white, middle class audiences who had experienced great social and political change in the 1960s that included the Civil Rights Movement and the Watergate scandal. -
