From Ivy Bank to Deutsche Bank !

That was the prestigious change of location for three of our mathematics students.

Kathryn Harrison, Emma Fallows and Amy Hamilton, all aged 15, who were accompanied by their mothers and teacher, Sue Riley. They spent two days with the movers and shakers in the City of as guests of the famous international Deutsche Bank.

The focus of the visit was to experience and see how the maths they learn in the classroom is used every day on the city’s trading floors. The visit complements the work being done in GCSE maths and statistics and was a fantastic opportunity for the students to see how the money market works.

The itinerary for the trip was as follows:

Thursday:

Projects devised by teacher, Mark Prendergast, have earned him a national industrial award.

Mark is one of just 12 teachers nationwide to receive an award jointly sponsored by the Institute of Electrical Engineers and the National Electronic Council. The awards are made annually to primary and secondary teachers who encourage students to develop a keen interest in subjects appropriate to electrical, electronic and manufacturing engineering through good practice, enthusiasm and dedication.

The judges were impressed with projects featuring self-regulating baby feeding bottles and security devices for nesting birds. Their band ‘Depth’ braved the cold in November to perform in town centre at an event raising money for the Sophie Wood Fund, in memory of a child victim of leukaemia.

You can have good buddies, you can have bosom buddies, but seventeen students from our special hearing impaired unit have been corresponding with fax buddies. The facsimile machine has been bought with money raised at the town’s Asda store where male colleagues had their legs (painfully !!) waxed smooth.

Writing to adults from our business partners all over helps students improve their literacy and grammar and assists in social communication. More importantly, it teaches them that communication is fun and both reading and writing can be enjoyable.

Currently they correspond with people from: Asda, Baxi Heating, Robert McBrides, Lancashire Evening Telegraph, EBP and Zoe Hebden, Aaron Holt, Kate Higgins and Laura Pennington Lancashire County Council. The station linked up with Radio 4 journalist, Paul Vickers.
