Lea (9) J. Champion (10) References Gold can be manufactured from other elements by several methods. The transmutation of silver to gold is the least difficult to accomplish. The methods developed by Francois Jollivet-Castelot offer a good chance of success, albeit with great danger due to the use of arsenic. The penultimate means of transmutation is the Philosophers' Stone of any degree, but that is another matter altogether. Fulcanelli and others Adepts, however, affirm that experiments such as these are not Alchemy, but rather "hyper-chemistry" or "archymy". The following procedures are included in this collection in order to afford a wider perspective to all inquirers, and to console those who fail to complete the Ars Magna. Most of the 19th and 20th century experimenters in this genre used a variety of "wet" techniques (refluxing with nitric acid, etc.), or "dry" transmutations with alloys in the furnace. Dr. Stephen Emmens used high-pressure hammering (500 tons/sq. in.) of silver at low temperature, followed by fluxing, granulation, more hammering, treatment with "modified nitric acid", and refining.     acoustics Review A Review on Sonochemistry and Its Environmental Applications Ba¸sakSavun-Hekimo˘glu Institute of Marine Sciences and Management, Istanbul University, 34134 Istanbul,˙ Turkey; [email protected] Received: 10 September 2020; Accepted: 23 October 2020; Published: 25 October 2020 Abstract: Sonochemistry is a significant contributor to green science as it includes: (i) the use of less toxic compounds and environmentally safe solvents, (ii) improvement of reaction conditions and selectivity, (iii) no toxic sludge generation, (iv) reduction in the energy use for chemical transformations, (v) reusability of materials. In water and wastewater treatment, ultrasound is used as an advanced oxidation process to eliminate refractory pollutants. Ultrasound is also used as a very effective sludge pretreatment technology in wastewater treatment plants to facilitate biogas production. Moreover, sonochemical synthesis of nanoparticles has recently attracted great attention as a greener protocol. This paper presents the main applications of ultrasound in environmental remediation and protection. The study also introduces mechanism for the degradation of pollutants from water via sonication in aqueous media and the principle factors affecting the cavitational effect. Introduction to Sonochemistry Sonochemistry is a field that studies the enhancement of chemical reaction and mass transfer rates under various ultrasonic conditions. Ultrasound is characterized as any sound wave at frequencies above normal human ear hearing range (i.e., above 16 kHz). The mechanism causing sonochemical effects in liquids is the phenomenon of acoustic cavitation. When ultrasound waves propagate in a liquid medium, they generate a repeating pattern of compressions and rarefactions to supply energy to the liquid phase.

In the interior of the lava fountains, the white-orange color indicates maximum temperatures of about 1120°C; deeper orange in both the fountains and flows reflects decreasing temperatures (<1100°C) at edges and the surface. (b) High winds swept the exposed ridges, and the filter cannister was changed in the shelter of a p^hoehoc (lava) ridge to protect the sample from gas contamination. (c) Because of the high temperatures and acid gases, special clothing and equipment was necessary to protect the eyes. nose, lungs, and skin. Safety features included military flight suits of nonflammable fabric, fuil-face respirators that are equipped with dual acidic gas filters (purple attachments), hard hats, heavy, thick-soled boots, and protective gloves. El Khadem The American University, Department of Chemistry, Washington D.C. 20016 Received February 13, 1996 ABSTRACT In a recent paper (El Khadem 1995). it was reported that an Arabic translation of a Greek text by Zosimos was found in a copy of a book entitled "Keys of Mercy and Secrets of Wisdom," written by the twelveth century alchemist Al-Tughra'i. Reported here is a descrip- tion of this rare book, which has recently been added to the Library of Congress' Near East Section collection. Tughra'i, Author and Translator The copy of "Keys of Mercy and Secrets of Wisdom" under consideration was written in two parts designated, "Part One, Introduction" by Al-Tughra'i", and Part Two, "From Keys of Wisdom by Zosimos" translated to Arabic by Al-Tughra'i. The author and translator's full name is Mu'ayed-ul-Din Abu Ismail Ibn Al-Hassan Ibn Ali Al-Tughra'i. He was born in 1062 A.D. in the city of Asbahan in Persia and was later appointed "Katib" (secretary) in the court of the Seljuq Sultan Malik-Shah and that of his successor, Sultan Muhammad. Because of his skills in calligraphy, he was assigned the duty of affixing the royal signature "Tughra" to the sultan's writs (hence his name, which means the writer of Tughras). After several years, Tughra'i moved to Mosul in Iraq where he was appointed Vizir to Emir Ghiyat-ul-Din Mas'ud.
