ANDERSON, QUERREY TO BATTLE FOR NEW YORK OPEN TITLE

 The top two seeds will square off for the New York Open title on Sunday as No. 1 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa and No. 2 seed Sam Querrey of the United States battle for the right to be called "King of New York" at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. This will be the second No. 1 vs. No. 2 ATP World Tour final this season, and second of the day, as No. 1 seed Roger Federer and No. 2 seed Grigor Dimitrov face off in the Rotterdam final.

 Anderson and Querrey are no strangers to one another, as the two have done battle 15 times on the ATP World Tour, with Querrey holding an 8-7 edge in their FedEx ATP Head2Head. The South African has won three of their last four meetings, all on hard-courts, including a QF victory in last year's U.S. Open. Querrey's lone victory in that span was a five-set triumph in the R16 at Wimbledon last summer en route to the SF.

 On Saturday, Anderson notched his third consecutive three-set victory this week in thrilling fashion, winning six of the last seven points to outlast No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori and reach his second ATP World Tour final of the year. The 31-year-old South African, who has fired a tournament-leading 61 aces in three matches this week, is looking to turn his fortunes around in ATP World Tour finals, posting a 3-11 lifetime record. His most recent loss in a final took place last month at Pune, falling to Frenchman Gilles Simon. Overall, Anderson has lost his last three ATP World Tour finals since winning 2015 Winston-Salem (d. Herbert), also finishing runner-up at Washington (l. to A. Zverev) and the U.S. Open (l. to Nadal) in 2017. Currently ranked No. 11, Anderson is guaranteed his return to the Top 10 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since Oct. 12, 2015, the only previous occasion he was ranked in the Top 10. A victory on Sunday would move Anderson to a career-high No. 9.

 Querrey advanced to his first ATP World Tour final of the year with a three-set win over No. 4 seed Adrian Mannarino on Saturday. The 30-year-old American has held serve in 37 of 38 service games this week en route to his first ATP World Tour final since winning the Los Cabos title last August (d. Kokkinakis). Querrey will take a three-match winning streak in tour finals into Sunday's encounter with Anderson (2016 Delray Beach, d. Ram; 2017 Acapulco, d. Nadal; 2017 Los Cabos, d. Kokkinakis). Overall, Querrey is 10-7 lifetime in ATP World Tour finals, including eight titles on hard-courts. Querrey will move up one spot to a career-high No. 11 in the ATP Rankings if he wins on Sunday.

 The doubles final represents a career milestone for Belarussian Max Mirnyi as he will be appearing in his 100th career ATP World Tour final. The No. 2 seeded tandem of Mirnyi and Austrian Philipp Oswald will take on the unseeded pairing of Dutchman Wesley Koolhof and New Zealander Artem Sitak for the doubles title. For the 40-year-old Mirnyi, this will be his 96th career doubles final (50-45), and he has played in four singles finals (1-3). Mirnyi and Oswald defeated the American duo of Ryan Harrison and Steve Johnson, 4-6, 6-4, [10-7], in Saturday semi-finals, while Koolhof and Sitak dispatched Moldovan Radu Albot and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, 6-4, 6-3, in the other semi-final. In their only previous matchup, Koolhof and Sitak defeated Mirnyi and Oswald, 6-4, 3-6, [10-7} in the semi-finals at Metz last September.

 Saturday's semi-finals at the New York Open feature two former U.S. Open finalists squaring off, and two players currently at their career-high ranking on the ATP World Tour, all of whom survived difficult quarter-final matches to set up a marquee slate of action at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

 The highest-ranked American on the ATP World Tour, No. 2 seed Sam Querrey, kicks things off on Stadium Court Saturday afternoon when he takes on No. 4 seed Adrian Mannarino of France for a spot in Sunday's final. Querrey moved into his first ATP World Tour SF of the season by getting past hard-serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic in two straight tie-breakers on Friday. Currently ranked at a career-high No. 12, Querrey has not dropped a set in two matches this week en route to his 35th career ATP World Tour SF (17-17) and first since winning the Los Cabos title last August (d. Dzumhur in SF, d. Kokkinakis in F). Mannarino also advanced to his first ATP World Tour SF of 2018 with a three-set win over Spanish qualifier Adrian Menendez-Maceiras on Friday. The 29-year-old Frenchman has played solid tennis since the end of last year, reaching three ATP World Tour SF since October 2017, including this week (2017 Tokyo, d.  The evening semi-final matchup will see No. 1 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa, last year's U.S. Open runner-up, take on Japanese No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori, the U.S. Open runner-up in 2014. Anderson advanced to his second ATP World Tour SF of the year with a hard-fought three-set victory over #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe in Friday's quarter-finals. The 31-year-old South African, who also needed three sets to get past American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo in the R16, is seeking his second ATP World Tour final of 2018, having reached the final at Pune last month (l. to Simon). Competing in his first ATP World Tour event of 2018, Nishikori continues to impress in his comeback from right wrist surgery, rallying for a three-set win over Moldovan Radu Albot on Friday. Nishikori missed the entire Australian swing last month to ensure he was 100 percent ready to compete and returned to action on the ATP Challenger Tour, claiming the title in Dallas, TX two weeks ago (d. McDonald). Overall, he has won eight straight matches heading into Saturday's semi-final encounter with Anderson and will look to improve on his 4-1 lifetime record against the South African, including 3-1 on hard-courts. • Quarter-final Friday at the New York Open contains two former US Open finalists aiming to keep their strong play going during the night session. First, Japanese No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori, the US Open runner-up in 2014, will try to keep winning in his first ATP World Tour event of the year when he takes on Moldova’s Radu Albot. Nishikori has won his first two matches in straight sets, extending the form which saw him claim the ATP Challenger Tour title in Dallas, TX two weeks ago, despite missing the entire Australian swing with a wrist injury. Albot has also recovered from a difficult start to the season on the ATP World Tour: the Moldovan had lost his first four main draw matches before coming to New York.

• Following that match, top seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa, last year’s US Open runner-up, will face off against Frances Tiafoe, one of two Americans left in the field and the youngest player remaining in the draw. Anderson reached the final at Pune in the first week of the season, but fell in the first round of the Australian Open to eventual semi-finalist Kyle Edmund, and had not played another match until he squeaked by American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo in the second round here. Meanwhile, Tiafoe’s three-set wins over Sebastian Korda and Dudi Sela means the 20-year-old has made the first ATP World Tour quarter-final of his career in New York.

• The other American joining Tiafoe in the quarter-finals is No. 2 seed Sam Querrey, who won two titles and reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon and the quarter-finals of the US Open last year. • The top two seeds at the New York Open will start their singles tournaments on Thursday after their first-round byes. No. 1 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa will hit Stadium Court to take on American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo. Anderson, who reached the final of the US Open last year, started the season well by reaching the final at Pune in the first week of 2018, but fell in the first round of the Australian Open to eventual semi-finalist Kyle Edmund, and has not played a match since. The 2014 US Open runner-up is back on the ATP World Tour for the first time since losing to Gael Monfils in Montreal on 9 August of last year, having been sidelined with a right wrist injury. 10 THINGS TO WATCH IN NEW YORK

1) Tour Returns to Long Island: This is the first ATP World Tour tournament on Long Island since 2004 when action took place in August one week before the US Open. This year’s tournament is being played at the NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Coliseum. It is the first of 10 tournaments in the U.S. and the only U.S. indoor event on the ATP World Tour.

2) Anderson Leads Field: This is the fifth time Kevin Anderson is the No. 1 seed in an ATP World Tour tournament. He is trying to win his first ATP title as the top seed. He opened the season with a runner-up at Pune (l. to Simon) and followed with a 1R at the Aust. Open (l. to Edmund in five sets).

3) Americans Seeded: Four of the top eight seeds are Americans, led by No. 2 Sam Querrey, No. 3 John Isner, No. 6 Ryan Harrison and No. 7 Steve Johnson. Last year each player won at least one title and the foursome accounted for six of the nine titles won by Americans. Overall there are 10 Americans in the main draw, not including possible qualifiers.

4) Nishikori Returns: No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori returns to the ATP World Tour for the first time since losing in his opening match on Aug. 9 to Gael Monfils in Montreal. The Japanese star has been sidelined with a right wrist injury. He came back last month at the Newport Beach, CA Challenger and lost in the 1R. Last Sunday he won the title at the Dallas Challenger.

5) Harrison Quick Starter: Harrison comes in with a 6-2 record this season after reaching the final in Brisbane (l. to Kyrgios) and the 3R at the Australian Open (l. to Cilic). A year ago Harrison won his maiden ATP singles title in Memphis and finished in the Top 50 for the first time at No. 47.

6) Youthful Wild Cards: The American trio of Sebastian Korda (17), Noah Rubin (21) and Mackenzie McDonald (22) are the wild cards in the draw. All three have played well in the early part of the season. Korda won the Australian Open boys’ junior title and is now the No. 1 junior in the world, Rubin captured the New Caledonia Challenger in the opening week of the season and McDonald was runner-up at the Dallas Challenger last week.

7) Youth is Served: The two youngest players in the draw: Korda (17) and Frances Tiafoe (20), meet in the 1R. Korda is making his ATP World Tour debut.

8) Like Father & Son: Korda captured the Australian Open boys’ crown 20 years after his father Petr claimed his biggest career title Down Under in Melbourne. Petr Korda also won the Hamlet Cup in Long Island in 1992 for one of his 10 career singles titles.

9) From Clay to Hard: Victor Estrella Burgos and Ivo Karlovic both lost in the 2R this past week on clay in Quito. They are the two oldest players in the draw at 37 and 38, respectively.

10) Doubles Draw: The top seeds are Bob and Mike Bryan, who have combined to win a record 114 doubles titles. No. 2 are Max Mirnyi and Philipp Oswald, No. 3 are Nicholas Monroe and John- Patrick Smith, and No. 4 are Robert Lindstedt and Franko Skugor.
