    OFCRI 2019 - Some background to the Tunes. Matt McConeghy Set One Girl I Left Behind Me (aka, ‘Brighton Camp’, in Irish ‘An Spailpin Fanach – The Rambling Laborer) is an 18th C tune, perhaps much older. It was included in many music collections from 1759 on, often with lyrics. From at least the time of the American Civil War it has been used by naval and military units as a farewell tune when leaving an encampment. Marching to Pretoria - Pretoria is a city in South Africa. It was the capital of the South African (Boer) Republic and was the scene of fighting during the Boer War- Pretoria was captured by British forces in March 1900. The song may date from the British attack in 1900 or from the time (about 1860) when the Boers marched from the coast to the interior of the country. Despite its grim background, apparently it was included in some songbooks published for use in American schools in the 1930s and slipped into our folk tradition through the classrooms. Folk singer Josef Marais did a popular version. Spanish Cavalier – by William D. Hendrickson. published in San Francisco in 1881, is a schmaltzy romantic ballad about a Spanish soldier leaving his love behind as he goes off to war. There is a fun version online sung by Riley Puckett, the vocalist and guitar player famous as a member of the seminal Hillbilly group ‘The Skillet Lickers’. Like many turn of the century ballads, it was originally set for piano in Bb. Nobody’s Business (‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business” as opposed to the Rihanna song “Nobody’s Business) was published in 1922 by Porter Grainger and Everett Robbins.

    AN ANALYSIS OF A JEAN CARIGNAN RECORD MILES KRASSEN Jean Carignan. Jean Carignan with Gilles Losier. 16 selections, instrumental, stereo. Philo Records, The Barn, North Ferrisburg, Vermont, 05473, 1974. $4.50. In the last fifteen years, Jean Carignan has attained a considerable reputation as a traditional or “folk” fiddler mainly through his virtuoso performances at large festivals like Newport. During this period two commercial recordings of his music have been issued in the United States. The first was a rather poorly recorded production on Folkways which stifled Carignan’s gifts in mediocre duets, poorly chosen repertoire, and haphazard accompaniment by the ubiquitous Pete Seeger. Later the Elektra Company improved things slightly. Their record contained a few of Carignan’s best solos but for the most part limited him to playing in a loud dance band which kept him largely inaudible. This latest record on the new Philo label gives us at last the opportunity to appraise in depth and begin to understand the achievement of this unique musician. We have at hand a carefully-recorded and well-produced record consisting exclusively of fiddle solos by Carignan with his regular accompanist, Gilles Losier, on piano. The material is drawn from the three main sources we have come to associate with Jean Carignan: traditional fiddle tunes of French Canada, medleys drawn primarily from recordings by fiddlers of Scottish extraction, and selections from the recorded repertory of Michael Coleman, foremost of American Irish fiddlers who hailed from Knockgrania, Co. Sligo. In addition, a fourth source is presented: adaptations for the fiddle by Carignan from recordings made by the accordion virtuoso, John J.

    Simon St. Pierre: A Short Biography Simon St. Pierre was born in St. Benoit, Québec on February 26, 1930. St. Benoit was a logging town north of Montréal which later was combined with several other smaller communities and is now named Mirabel. His family had a farm "on the hill" as he described it. He was the youngest, ninth in a family of five girls and four boys. He grew up with lots of music. His father was a fiddler and really loved the music, although Simon commented that he never put much time into it and wasn't a great fiddler. But one of his older brothers was a very good fiddler. Simon loved listening to them play, and learned a lot from them. Early years in Québec Simon couldn't wait to get old enough to play, and started playing music as soon as he could. He played guitar when he was young. Simon started playing for square dances with his brothers around the age of 12, probably playing guitar which was his main instrument for several years. Simon was a lumberjack for many years, starting in the lumbering camps of northern Québec. There were people there from many parts of Canada, and many of them were fiddlers who brought their varied repertoires with them. Although he started fiddling at the age of 14, that was probably what really got him to start playing more seriously. As he said, fiddling was "all we had for enjoyment" at the logging camps. When Simon was young he was exposed to a variety of fiddling: French Canadian, Irish and Maritime fiddling were the prevalent styles.

  • Private Music Lessons at WPI
    Private Music Lessons at WPI WPI has many highly qualified instructors available for private instruction on voice and most instruments. Students may study privately for a fee and receive up to 1/3 units of academic credit which can be applied to the Humanities and Arts requirement or they may study solely for enrichment. Those who enroll for credit must receive a one hour lesson each week. If not receiving credit students may sign up for either ½ hour or 1 hour lessons. Students may enroll for lessons in the Humanities and Arts office located in Salisbury Labs. In order to receive academic credit students also need to contact Professor Weeks ([email protected]). Flute - Tracy Kraus, M.M. Boston Conservatory, studied flute with Louis Moyse, Leone Buyse, Trevor Wye and Geoffrey Gilbert. Ms. Kraus studied at the Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festivals, as well as the International Summer School in England. An active chamber musician, Ms. Kraus is the Executive Director of the Worcester Chamber Music Society. She has performed solo and chamber music in the United States and Europe, has been featured on several live concert/interview radio broadcasts on WICN in Worcester, Massachusetts and WGBH in Boston, and has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York. She performs with the Mechanics Hall Brown Bag for Kids Ensemble and the Meet the Musicians Woodwind Quartet, both sponsored by TD Banknorth. Ms. Kraus has toured the United States successfully as a soloist, featuring the music of American and Russian composers. She is a member of the Mendocino Music Festival Orchestra (CA) and the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra.
