The IRCB crew came together to make a zine but we all sort of realized that, hey, this was far less exciting than we had originally thought. We were having a little less fun putting this zine together than we wanted, so for this edition, I’m hoping that we delivered something a little more out there and fun for you, dear reader, because for us? This issue was a blast to make. I only want to take a short moment here to talk about something I’m aiming to do in 2019: Read More Backlog Comics. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have an extensive backlog of comics that I’ve picked up at cons, in the shop, or in some digital sale. With the books I’m reading week after week, I never actually get around to reading those books. It’s been a real dilemma for me! I joked about it in the first few days of 2018, but I truly considered dropping all of my regular pulled comics from my LCS and on comiXology in order to make a sig- nificant dent in my backlog. The idea was: I could not buy any new comics until I got through most, if not all, of my backlog comics. Yeah. I know. That sounds insane. Of course, my impulse control and FOMO got the best me and I didn’t actually do any of this.

ABSTRACT The figure of the cyborg, or more latterly, the posthuman body has been an increasingly familiar presence in a number of academic disciplines. The majority of such studies have focused on popular culture, particularly the depiction of the posthuman in science-fiction, fantasy and horror. To date however, few studies have focused on the posthuman and the comic book superhero, despite their evident corporeality, and none have questioned comics’ readers about their responses to the posthuman body. This thesis presents a cultural history of the posthuman body in superhero comics along with the findings from twenty-five, two-hour interviews with readers. By way of literature reviews this thesis first provides a new typography of the posthuman, presenting it not as a stable bounded subject but as what Deleuze and Guattari (1987) describe as a ‘rhizome’. Within the rhizome of the posthuman body are several discursive plateaus that this thesis names Superhumanism (the representation of posthuman bodies in popular culture), Post/Humanism (a critical-theoretical stance that questions the assumptions of Humanism) and Transhumanism (the philosophy and practice of human enhancement with technology).

The computer and its networks are the most complicated machines that humans have ever constructed. Their history is not an easy one to record, tying together as it does abstruse mathematics, complex engineering, fortunes made and lost, and a rigorous accounting of the computer’s transformative powers over how we live, work, and play. Yet we require an understanding of how the computer developed as it did if we are to understand the arguments throughout the rest of the book. This means that we have to be ruthlessly selective in constructing a history to suit our purposes, choos- ing comprehensibility over comprehensiveness. In the sections that follow, I trace the ups and down of simu- lation and participation through six discrete generations of computing. I offer a polemical account about the development of an ideal of computing, tracking what the evolutionary biolo- gist Richard Dawkins calls “memes,” the intellectual equivalent of genes or self-replicating ideas.1 The pages that follow are filled with narratives about people who become infected with memes about the computer as an essential culture machine. The two memes central to the development of the computer as a culture machine are simulation and participation, and tracking their interplay is key to developing these historical narratives. These memes usually preceded the technology, and those infected then spent years developing computers and systems to bring these essences into existence, with each generation building on or challenging the last.
