Thesis Advisor: Terry Kennedy, Ph.D. ABSTRACT In the past eight years, the airline market in the United States has gone through a string of bankruptcies, some brought on by the severe economic recession in 2008 and 2009. These financial difficulties provided the impetus for four giant airline mergers, causing concern that market concentration had exceeded a healthy limit. This paper examines the competitive landscape of domestic air travel through an analysis of the relationship between airline fares and different levels of competition in the domestic airline market. Taking US Department of Transportation data from 2008 and 2016, I use an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model to determine the relationship between average market fares and the type/number of competing airlines in each airport-pair market. The results for each year represent the strength of competitive forces, which I then compare to determine the manner in which competition has changed over the eight-year period. -

General Information on Airline Service Development at the Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA) IDA currently has 3 scheduled airlines (United, Delta and Allegiant) with Direct flights to Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver, Colorado; Las Vegas, Nevada; Phoenix/Mesa Arizona and seasonal summer service to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Oakland and Los Angeles California. In addition, Air Charter companies on the field offer direct flights to Boise and other destinations on demand. The airport is a landlord for the airlines and has very little say in where airlines fly, the ticket prices they charge or the level of customer service they may or may not provide. We do stay in close contact with all the airlines, attend their conferences and meet with their headquarter offices to offer suggestions and insight into our market and to market our airport and community in effort to attract new routes. We also partner with a very competent and successful air service development consultant to assist us in this effort. However, in the end Airlines make their decisions based on profitability and they are ultimately in control. Air service is directly tied to the economy and how many people are flying. Air service is also driven by the amount of utilization of existing flights and individual airline business models. All these factors combine to reflect a continuous volatile airline industry. After safety and security, Air Service Development is a high priority for the Airport. We strive to be responsive to the community travel needs in both business and leisure routes. Our mission is to first maintain our existing airlines and routes (in the recent economy, many regional airports have lost air service). -

SAFETY Safety Report 2020 Edition Foreword A Coordinated, Risk-based Approach to Improving Global Aviation Safety The air transport industry plays a major role in global economic activity and development. One of the key elements to maintaining the vitality of civil aviation is to ensure safe, secure, efficient and environmentally sustainable operations at the global, regional and national levels. A specialized agency of the United Nations, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) was established in 1944 to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation throughout the world. ICAO promulgates Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) to facilitate harmonized regulations in aviation safety, security, efficiency and environmental protection on a global basis. Today, ICAO manages over 12 000 SARPs across the 19 Annexes and five Procedures for Air Navigation Services (PANS) to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention), many of which are constantly evolving in tandem with latest developments and innovations. ICAO serves as the primary forum for co-operation in all fields of civil aviation among its 193 Member States. Improving the safety of the global air transport system is ICAO’s guiding and most fundamental strategic objective. The Organization works constantly to address and enhance global aviation safety through the following coordinated activities: • Policy and Standardization; • Monitoring of key safety trends and indicators; • Safety Analysis; and • Implementing programmes to address safety issues. The ICAO Global Aviation Safety Plan (GASP) presents the strategy in support of the prioritization and continuous improvement of aviation safety. The GASP sets the goals and targets and outlines key safety enhancement initiatives (SEIs) aimed at improving safety at the international, regional and national levels. -

On 23 December 2011, the Viable group unveiled a vision for the Derriford site which would see the runway extended, a new terminal built, and land turned over for lucrative commercial use. Viable will discuss the plans with Plymouth City Council. The Sutton Harbour Group (SHG), which operates Plymouth on a 150-year-lease from Plymouth City Council, closed the airport on 23 December 2011 saying it is not economically sustainable. But Viable, which opposed the closure, disagrees with the suggestion that Plymouth cannot support a top-class aerodrome. Basing its design on London City Airport, Viable envisages a facility that could eventually handle up to 1 million passengers a year. The phased project would take up to ten years to fully realize, initially seeing the reopening of the airport with restricted operations and limited services. But the group said that after about three years, the operation could be expanded dramatically. Its vision is for the runway to be extended from 1160 m to its maximum 1390 m, so larger aircraft can be welcomed. A runway loop would mean aircraft can wait for take-off slots, diminishing delays. But ahead of this, a simple initial resurfacing of the runway would only cost GBP 500 000, Viable said, a quarter of the expected cost. -

Walker,5 and Steve Wurth6 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, Fort Worth, TX, 76109, United States of America The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II incorporates many significant technological enhancements derived from predecessor development programs. The X-35 concept demonstrator program incorporated some that were deemed critical to establish the technical credibility and readiness to enter the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) program. Key among them were the elements of the F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing propulsion system using the revolutionary shaft-driven LiftFan® system. However, due to X- 35 schedule constraints and technical risks, the incorporation of some technologies was deferred to the SDD program. This paper provides insight into several of the key air vehicle and propulsion systems technologies selected for incorporation into the F-35. It describes the transition from several highly successful technology development projects to their incorporation into the production aircraft. I. A Conceptual Design of a Short Takeoff and Landing Regional Jet Airliner Andrew S. Hahn 1 NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA, 23681 Most jet airliner conceptual designs adhere to conventional takeoff and landing performance. Given this predominance, takeoff and landing performance has not been critical, since it has not been an active constraint in the design. Given that the demand for air travel is projected to increase dramatically, there is interest in operational concepts, such as Metroplex operations that seek to unload the major hub airports by using underutilized surrounding regional airports, as well as using underutilized runways at the major hub airports. Both of these operations require shorter takeoff and landing performance than is currently available for airliners of approximately 100-passenger capacity. This study examines the issues of modeling performance in this now critical flight regime as well as the impact of progressively reducing takeoff and landing field length requirements on the aircraft’s characteristics.
