Message from the Board

2 Korean American Family Services | KFAM Message from the Board Dear ,

Welcome to Korean American Family Services’ (KFAM’s) 34th Anniversary Gala, “Fostering Love.”

This year we’re proud to highlight ourAsian Foster Family Initiative (AFFI), a program we started in 2014 to recruit, train and support Korean and other Asian Pacific Islander (API) foster parents to provide culturally appropriate homes to API foster children. When we started 3 years ago, there were zero active, trained Korean foster parents in the Greater area. We discovered Korean children who were placed in foster homes that did not share the same food, customs, or even language. Today, we are proud to announce that there are 32 trained Korean foster parents who have taken in 45 foster children, including 12 children who have been adopted or are in permanent legal guardianships.

In December 2016, KFAM became the first licensed Foster Family Agency in the nation specializing in the needs of Korean and API communities. We are currently conducting trainings for the Korean and Chinese communities, and have plans to expand into Filipino and other API communities soon. Working with community partners and donors, we have taken the initial step towards building the first generation of API foster parents in Southern . With 600-800 API foster kids in LA County alone, there is still much work to be done.

We thank Dean and Maria Turnmeyer-Suh, our Keynote Speakers. Dean and Maria became foster parents three years ago when KFAM conducted our first foster parent training. They have gone on to foster 12 children, seeing it as their moral imperative to provide safe homes for abused and neglected children as long as they are able to do so. Thank you for inspiring us and reminding us that we can always do more for vulnerable children who need our love and support. Thank you, Hansun and Jiho, for performing for us this evening. We are so grateful to you for sharing your musical talents with us. And we are in awe of your mother, Grace, who has raised you to become the talented and poised young gentlemen that you are.

Thank you to our 24 staff, 80+ annual volunteers, and 16 board members who keep KFAM running every day.

Most of all, thanks to all of you who are here supporting KFAM. To our guests, donors, and Gala sponsors, including our Title Sponsor Commonwealth Business Bank: without your help, AFFI could never have become what it is today. We are indebted to you all.

Sincerely,

Sunny Alvin Kang Charles Yoo Chair Gala Co-Chair Gala Co-Chair

KFAM’s Mission

KFAM’s mission is to support and strengthen Korean American families and individuals in the Greater Los Angeles area through counseling, education, and social services.

KFAM was founded in 1983 by immigrant Korean women inspired by the vision of Dr. Tae Young Lee, Korea’s first female attorney, an early advocate of the rights of women, and the founder of the Legal Aid Center for Family Relations in Korea. KFAM opened its doors to offer hope and help for immigrant families devastated by economic hardships, immigration stress, and family strife.

The original mission and vision live on through KFAM’s broad range of family intervention, mental health, and social services that provide an important safety net for families and community members. Our dedicated, skilled team of bilingual staff and volunteers serve over 6,000 adults and children each year with quality, culturally- responsive services and compassionate care that speak directly to the challenges among Korean American families undergoing trauma or adaptation stresses. Our services truly provide a vital safety net for resource-poor families without access to care.

Changing Lives, Strengthening Families Since 1983
